Summer break has arrived, and children in Rugao, Jiangsu, China have a new place to goโ€”the village reading room.
A free reading class recently came to Xiaolu Village in Chengnan Street, where children sat together turning pages and listening to stories. Cicadas outside the window, the sound of pages inside. All summer long, reading activities like this are running across 116 village reading rooms in Rugao, covering 19 "reading plus" programs spanning handicrafts, painting, popular science, and picture books, bringing cultural experiences right to the doorsteps of rural youth.
A full summer doesn't have to mean traveling far. Sometimes opening a book is enough.
What did you do most during your childhood summers? Let's chat in the comments.

This plump little white beauty is the Wanfu lily bulb.
It grows in the selenium-rich soil of Wanfu Village, Banjing Town, Rugao, Jiangsu, China. The bulbs are full and firm, with large, thick scales, pure white and translucent throughoutโ€”like a piece of warm white jade. Eaten raw it's crisp and sweet; cooked, it turns soft and starchy. Locals stew it with white fungus, stir-fry it with celery, or toss it with chili and shredded pork, where the crisp sweetness pairs surprisingly well with the savory meat.
In Banjing Town, lily bulbs are how you open up an entire summer. Have you ever tasted a lily bulb with no bitterness at all? Let's chat in the comments.

At six in the morning, the lotus pond at Shuihui Garden in Rugao, Jiangsu, China is just waking up.
Dew still clings to petals and leaf tips as pink and white blossoms lift their heads from the emerald leaves, nestled against ancient pavilions and waterside halls, mirrored in the clear water beneath the winding bridge. A breeze crosses the pond carrying damp air and a faint lotus fragrance. The whole garden is quiet enough to hear only birdsong and the sound of flowers opening.
A four-hundred-year-old garden, and a pond of lotus that knows how to rest. Would you get up early once for a lotus pond at six in the morning? Let's chat in the comments.

In Yanhe Village, Rugao, Jiangsu, China, hundreds of clay soy sauce vats stand in neat rows across an open-air drying yard.
Each day workers lift the lids and turn the fermenting mash with wooden rakes. This way of making soy sauce has been passed down for over a thousand yearsโ€”earthen vat fermentation, natural sun-drying, no rushing. Time does the rest of the work.
From the moment the mash enters the vat to the moment the sauce is drawn, it sits under the sun for an entire summer. As locals put it, sunlight can create a flavor machines cannot.
Have you ever seen how soy sauce is made? Let's chat in the comments.

In Pingyuanchi Village, Rugao, Jiangsu, China, a weathered old wall has turned into a pond full of lotus blossoms.
Seven students from Nanjing University of the Arts spent several days standing before it alongside children from the village. Sketching, mixing colors, outliningโ€”lotus leaves spread wide and flowers grew one by one from the tips of their brushes. Hidden in the mural is Hehe, the village mascot. The faded, crumbling wall has become a place where visitors now stop for photos.
One wall, big hands guiding small ones, painting an entire summer.
Have you ever seen a village mural? If you passed a lotus wall like this, would you stop for a photo? Let's chat in the comments.

In Rugao, Jiangsu, China, there's a school unlike any other. The average student is over sixty. Some have studied here for ten years, others for a full twentyโ€”enrolled since the school's very first year and still not "graduated."
This is Rugao Senior University, celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year with a performance staged by the students themselves. Singing, dancing, calligraphy, a fashion walk, a choirโ€”everyone on stage takes it seriously enough to move you. In full makeup and costume, their movements may not be as sharp as a young performer's, but the sheer commitment will have the audience smiling before they know it.
Twenty years is long enough for a child to grow up, and long enough for a group of people to find their own light in the open hours after retirement. In that moment on stage, they aren't someone's parent or grandparent. They're simply themselves.
Do you know an older person who's still learning, rehearsing, and performing after retirement? If you reached sixty one day, would you walk into a school like this and become a student again? Let's chat in the comments.

Look down from the sky and summer in Pingyuanchi Village, Rugao, Jiangsu, China, is green in every shade.
Crisscrossing field ridges cut the land into neat squares, with lush rice filling the view to the horizon. This land grows both rapeseed and riceโ€”a golden sea of flowers in winter and spring, turning to emerald waves of rice at the height of summer. One field, two colors, never idle in any season.
Pingyuanchi has changed a great deal in recent years. Fields were leveled, irrigation channels built, roads rebuiltโ€”farming here no longer depends on the mercy of the weather. Since high-standard farmland was established, yields have steadied and the scenery has grown lovelier, drawing visitors who now come out of their way just to look. Agriculture and tourism have slowly grown together in these fields.
Have you ever seen farmland from above? If you came to Rugao, would you stand on a field ridge and breathe in the scent of rice leaves? Let's chat in the comments.

In Changjiang Town, Rugao, Jiangsu, China, there's a stretch of Yangtze shoreline unlike any other.
Five years ago this place looked entirely different. Today the 5.5-kilometer Longyou Bay Ecological Scenic Belt winds its green way along the river. Flood protection, water conservation, wildlife habitat, and cultural tourism are all threaded together by a single shoreline. Walk the riverside trail and you'll find rushing water on one side, layer upon layer of greenery on the other, with waterbirds occasionally lifting from the reeds and vanishing into the distant skyline.
Locals say it changes with every seasonโ€”flowers in spring, shade in summer, swaying reeds in autumn, migratory birds resting in winter. On weekend mornings runners jog along the bank; at dusk families stroll and walk their dogs. No tickets, no fences. Just 5.5 kilometers of scenery laid out along the Yangtze, waiting for you to walk into it.
Is there a riverside walk like this near where you live? If you came to Rugao, would you spend an evening strolling along Longyou Bay with the river breeze?

Have you ever bitten into a pear and felt the juice run down your fingers?
At Xuwan Ecological Family Farm in Dongchen Town, Rugao, Jiangsu, China, the "Sucui No. 1" pear is entering its busiest harvest season of the year. Bred by the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, this premium early-ripening variety has yellow-green skin, a smooth surface, and tender, crisp white flesh. No effort neededโ€”one gentle bite and the sweet juice bursts across your tongue, filling your mouth with the taste of summer.
Xuwan's orchard planted its first Sucui No. 1 tree back in 2017, nearly a decade ago. Across more than a hundred acres, growers are busy picking, sorting, and packing. Alongside Sucui No. 1, varieties like Cuiguan and Qiuyue ripen in staggered waves, keeping the season going from July through early October.
Rugao is known as a land of longevity and wellness, where the soil and water nourish people and fruit alike. Pears grown in this selenium-rich earth turn out sweet in just the right way.
Have you ever eaten a pear straight off the tree? Tell us your favorite summer fruit in the comments.
