Calling all artists, make 2025 your year of Jingdezhen. Join us in the porcelain capital for an independent residency or one of our summer ceramic intensives. Expand your skillset, grow your practice, and put your visions into production.

Our residency program turns 9 years old this year and in that time we’ve perfected the art of immersing artists into the culture, tradition, and possibilities of Jingdezhen.

made her return trip to Jingdezhen from her home base in Helsinki this spring for a very productive month. Collecting cast-off bits and discarded bobs was her ceramic process of choice this time, and in Jingdezhen there is a lot to collect. Amongst the studio time, reunions with old friends, and Jingdezhen exploration she also managed a few DJ sets. A true renaissance woman of Jingdezhen.

Jingdezhen is a place where Artists with backgrounds in all media can participate in the ceramic process. has a background in Art Therapy, Painting, and textiles and goals in clay. She made her first return trip to Jingdezhen this spring and made some wonderful work in the studio and in concert with the city. What would you make in the world’s porcelain capital?

Sylviane Lo-Man on her work in Jingdezhen. “This project explores the connection between the body and its environment. It addresses notions of identity and the human condition in ourcomplex contemporary world. By considering the body as a link between the individual and the world around them, I wish to spark discussions on universal themes such as impermanence, otherness and transformation.”

is here on an up-cycling research mission from Finland. There’s plenty of ceramic materials of any kind to work with in Jingdezhen, even if you do get funny reactions for working with some of them. While on our collecting mission we had a fun time explaining why an artist would “fly across the world to pick up trash.”

Join artist Alex Simpson in this 3-week workshop navigating the porcelain capital of Jingdezhen. Together we will step out of our artistic comfort zone and explore new ways of making in collaboration with a city of skilled artisans. We will draw inspiration from the accumulation of 1700 years of porcelain production and history. Through an extensive program of workshop visits and in-studio instruction you will experience a breadth of techniques and technologies, from ancient to cutting edge, in a city where nearly anything imaginable is possible in clay. A focus of the residency will be on embracing the access to a wide range of ceramic processes and specialists unique to Jingdezhen. We will discover through collecting, combining, curating and intervening how traditional and modern ways of ceramics can be blended into your own specific approach to making art in the city. Using porcelain in all its states whether plastic, liquid, bone dry or dust we will experiment, accepting uncertainty while following the material and the skilled hands of the artisans we work with. As we traverse the city we will gather inspiration, materials and ideas to bring back to the studio. We will discuss how our personal narratives and experience of place influence the work we make. Through conversation, mentorship and making you will develop your practice and define concepts and processes which can be brought home to inform your work going forward.

In-studio lessons include blue & white painting, bone-dry carving, handbuilding techniques, concept generation and refinement, and personalized instruction based on individual goals. Outside industrial process visits include ceramic 3d printing, water-jet cutting, ceramic CNC milling, decal production, large scale ceramic production, and factory ceramic production. Artist and artisan workshop visits include throwers, mold makers, casters, carvers, slab makers, painters, and studio ceramic artists from around the world. Visits to cultural and scenic spots and a closing exhibition for all involved artists will round out the session.

Building Form and Concept. June 16 – July 15 2024

Join artist Natalia Arbelaez in a three-week workshop exploring Jingdezhen and all its ceramic history, technology, and craft together. This residency will focus on mentorship, conceptual theory, and professional development. Ideas of cultural influences and research, and how we use these in our practice, will be discussed with the rich backdrop of the world’s porcelain capital. Sculptural making will be a focal point in the studio classroom, from gestural loose building to the more modeled form. We will go from the sketch to the physical and look at various sculptural techniques useful in executing a given idea. Focus will be on conceptualizing and building sculptural and decorative ceramic projects and integrating the techniques and processes unique to Jingdezhen into those objects. From potters and mold makers to water jet cutters and ceramic CNC milling, we will tour the ceramic processes of Jingdezhen and draw from them to conceptualize studio work not possible anywhere else, and build on them with in studio lessons from Natalia and local masters of traditional skills like blue and white painting and decorative carving.
