Production of an monthly electronic newsletter which includes information on relevant calls for proposals and career opportunities in Europe (at Member State and European Union level), as well as in China; articles about R&D, breakthroughs and policy developments;,on-going international collaboration activities etc.

The European Research Council is expanding its scientific evaluation structure to match the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. Beginning with the 2028 calls, a dedicated thematic panel—Fundamentals of AI (PE12)—will be established to evaluate research proposals focused on the foundational principles of artificial intelligence within a specialized scientific framework.

🌍 Connecting Cyprus, Europe and Southeast Asia through Research

Cyprus is looking ahead to further strengthen its research and innovation ecosystem, with a clear ambition to promote scientific excellence, attract international talent and build stronger global partnerships. Its National Research and Innovation Strategy 2024–2026 places particular emphasis on research excellence, internationalisation, collaboration between academia and industry, and the development of innovative businesses.

🚀 A new chapter for research and innovation
There are also new developments on the horizon. On 29 September 2026, the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) launched a public consultation on its proposed funding portfolio for 2028–2034. Its five pillars cover research, knowledge transfer, innovation, infrastructure and skills, and internationalisation.

🌏 Opportunities for EU–ASEAN collaboration
With its ambition to strengthen international research links and its focus on innovation, technology and knowledge exchange, Cyprus offers interesting potential for future cooperation with Southeast Asia: From digital technologies and innovative materials to sustainable development and research excellence, there are many areas to connect expertise, explore shared challenges and develop new partnerships.

On Cyprus's National Day, we warmly invite researchers, universities and innovation organisations in Cyprus and Southeast Asia to explore opportunities for collaboration through Horizon Europe, and other European research and innovation programmes.

What if the seaweed wrapping your sushi could help protect your skin from the sun?

The September MSCA Fellow of the Month, Debora Tomazi Pereira, explored exactly that.

During her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Universidad de Málaga, Débora studied red macroalgae as a source of natural photoprotective compounds, while exploring more sustainable ways to use marine resources.

Her research brought together marine biotechnology, circular production and the blue economy, exploring how resources from the sea can support more sustainable production while reducing waste.
