One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. The campaign, which launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or r***d during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

In 2024 we escalate the call to Rise For Freedom because of the persistent intensification of violence – ongoing r**e, hate, exclusion, killing, discrimination, exploitation, abuse, wars, division, occupation and control. Control over our bodies, minds and resources. Of unprecedented fascism and of fascist governments destroying all freedoms. We cannot stop now.

Rise For Freedom is…
Defining and reclaiming what FREEDOM means within solidarity, democracy, safety, equality, dignity and justice, and in the context of death, war, loss, destruction and separation
It is Rising for peace, compassion, kindness, connection, community and care, and connecting our freedom to someone else’s lack of freedom.
It is...

Reviving unity
Exploring new ways of thinking
Widening the lens
Creating another story
Changing reality
Building another future
It is the EVOLUTION of love
and BEING the new world.

The feminist movement has been far from unified; strife and division often arose as activists faced the difficulties of meeting the diverse needs and priorities of the women and those who identify as female.

Enormous changes have swept through the entire world altering the lives of women at all levels of society thanks to the bravery and sacrifices of those before us.

During early start of feminism, the changing nature of women's lives helped create the circumstances that allowed them to begin to act politically, on their own behalf and for others. Female activists were organizing protests in an attempt to improve their work environment and wages. Middle-class women's role in the home, on the other hand, led them to develop a sense of themselves as members of a cohesive group; this consciousness would later translate, for some, into the idea that they could collectively demand rights. Concern about the urban poor, moreover, allowed middle-class women to engage in charity work and temperance campaigns, in which they saw themselves as working toward the "moral uplift" of society in the same way that they cared for the moral wellbeing of their families at home. While coded as domestic and benevolent, these campaigns gave women a public voice and significant social power.

This unification of our voices as activists speaking loud and clear on the diverse challenges our world faces is more than needed especially in these times.

From heat waves to droughts, tsunamis, earthquakes, harsh winters, fires, climate change is affecting us all and little is done about it.

Because of demonstrations like these in 2019 by Extinction Rebellion, the less climate action taken was a step towards saving our planet.

The temptation to transform into a superhero is inviting, yet unrealistic.

There is so much to be done to make our world a better place. The challenges are numerous, the support is little so what legacy are we leaving behind on personal and collective levels?

We rejoice when community activism reaches global levels and spark change.

Its a huge honour to witness the uprising of young activists all over the globe doing things we never thought of at their age.

One thing is for sure, our determination to bring change will keep fueling our passion.

WHY MENSTRUATION MATTERS

Menstruation is a key indicator of health and vitality for women and girls. Managing this hygienically and with dignity is an integral part of good sanitation and hygiene.

We have been working at shading light and providing guidance around menstruation.

At first when you hear the word menstruation (or “menses”, or “period”) you might recognize its connection with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on health as it is an important part of women and girls’ reproductive health.

The SDGs consists of 17 goals with targets and indicators for achieving sustainable development and equality by 2030.

Like in life, many issues (such as menstrual hygiene) intersect with several SDGs simultaneously. Meaning, menstrual health is therefore not only linked to SDG 3, but it is also connected to SDG 6 (clean water & sanitation), SDG 4 (quality of education), SDG 5 (gender equality and participation), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 ( Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 10 (Reducing Inequality), SDG 11(Sustainable Cities and Communities) , SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 ( Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)

Menstruation should be a top priority in all development agendas. It's time to take action starting in our homes, schools, religious settings, communities to change the status quo

The burning passion behind MHDay is to a world in which every menstruating person is empowered to manage menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame:

– everyone can access and afford the menstrual product of their choice

– period stigma is history

– eveyone (all sexes)have basic information about menstruation

– everyone can access period-friendly water, sanitation & hygiene facilities everywhere.

Poor menstrual hygiene caused by a lack of education on the issue, persisting taboos and stigma, limited access to hygienic menstrual products and poor sanitation infrastructure undermines the educational opportunities, health and overall social status of women and girls around the world. As a result, millions of women and girls are kept from reaching their full potential.

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for all women and girls. More specifically, MH Day:

breaks the silence, raises awareness and changes negative social norms around MHH, and
engages decision-makers to increase the political priority and catalyse action for MHH at global, national and local levels.
