Safer Internet Cameroon Helping make the Internet Safe for children and young people in Cameroon. Inspiré du programme de l'Union Européenne "Safer Internet".

Accompagner les enfants et les jeunes dans leur expérience Internet pour une utilisation responsable. Safer Internet Cameroon is an Internet Society (ISOC) Next Generation Leaders (NGL) Laureate Project initiated by Victor Ndonnang (ISOC NGL Laureate 2012). The main objective of this project is to help make the Internet Safe for Children and young people in Cameroon. It aims to promote safe, secur

e, useful and responsible use of the Internet to young people in Cameroon. The Internet is a force for good, but It is also a source of risks and we need to protect of children from them. Cameroon is a young country. Approximately 70% of its population is young and 60% are under 20 years old. Only 4% of the Cameroon’s population have access to Internet and the majority of its Internet users are young people. According to the website of Internet statistics (http://internetworldstats.com), the top ten most visited websites in Cameroon are the “dating sites” (Badoo and Hi5) and social media (Facebook and YouTube). According to the website www.socialbakers.com, 72% of Internet users in Cameroon are regular users of the social network facebook and almost 60% of these "Facebookers" are young under 25 years old. Unfortunately, many young Internet users in Cameroon who are frequents users of dating websites and social network websites have not attended any prior Internet training and are not aware of risks and challenges of the Internet. Thus, they are therefore the easiest victims for cyber-criminals and other cyber attacks. They are not aware of protecting their privacy and that of their friends on Facebook. Many are even against their will, potential cybercriminals because they are not aware of the serious consequences that may result from their actions. The "Safer Internet Cameroon" project wants to improve that situation and support young internet users in their daily use of the Internet. This project wants to create an Internet's environment without fear for children and young people in Cameroon through the following actions:

1. An Informative Web site for self-training on risks and challenges of the Internet and Social Medias (That web site aims to become the first web of children and young people when starting their Internet's experience);

2. Organization of awareness campaigns and training workshop in primary and secondary schools;

3. Conception, printing and distribution of a "Safer Internet" Guide book for Children and young people in Cameroon;

4. More others education actions in schools and children or youth training centres. This project is started with the financial support of the Internet Society (www.internetsociety.org).
