DR OLIVER PREISIG, CO-FOUNDER OF INQABA BIOTEC, VISITS CRID

On Wednesday, 19 August 2026, Professor Charles Wondji, 's Executive Director, received a delegation from Biotechnical Industries, a leading South African genomics and supplier.
Led by Dr. Oliver Preisig, Executive Director and co-founder of Inqaba Biotec, the delegation discussed opportunities to establish a more reliable supply of reagents, , and molecular biology equipment for CRID’s research programmes. The meeting was attended by CRID’s Heads of Department, Laboratory Manager, and project Principal Investigators ( ).
Dr Preisig subsequently toured CRID’s core facilities, including the molecular biology laboratories, insectaries and the genomic platform, to gain a better understanding of the Centre’s current activities, capacities, and requirements. The visit laid the foundation for a new collaboration between CRID and Inqaba Biotec in laboratory supplies, technical support, and related biotechnology services.

FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS WORKSHOP-DAY2
Hands-on learning
The second day of the Functional Genomics Workshop brought participants deeper into the practical side of molecular biology, with a full schedule dedicated to Module 2: Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Cloning and Sanger Sequencing workflow. After a brief recap of Day 1 which included brainstorming and Questions and Answers sessions, attendees rolled up their sleeves for an intensive day of laboratory exercises.
The morning kicked off with a Hands-on Bioassays session held in the Insectary, where all facilitators guided participants through foundational techniques. The first rotation, Station A, took place in Lab 3 under the expert supervision of Dr. Mersimine Koumo, Dr. Carlos Djoko and Theofelix Tekoh. Here, participants learned the critical skill of differentiating between male, female, and virgin flies, an essential step in genetic crossing experiments.
Meanwhile, Station B focused on the GAL4/UAS fly crossing system, under the supervion of Dr. Manuela Tachou and Vanessa Ngannang, where trainees practiced setting up crosses and selecting the first-generation (F1) progeny. This workflow is a cornerstone of targeted gene expression studies in Drosophila.
After that, the group reconvened for a Hands-on session on True Transformant Screening, allowing participants to apply their knowledge in identifying successfully transformed bacteria cells. The session was repeated after to reinforce the technique, ensuring every attendee gained confidence in the screening process.
The afternoon shifted toward data analysis with a Hands-on Interpretation of results session, where participants learned how to read and analyze sequencing outputs and crossover data. The day concluded with a post-evaluation, giving everyone the opportunity to clarify doubts and solidify their understanding. The workshop wrapped up with the end of the in-person capacitation in Functional Genomics, leaving participants equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical bench skills. Certificates were distributed to mark the successful completion of this intensive training experience.

CRID LAUNCHES INTENSIVE FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS WORKSHOP

The aim of this course is to Empower Next-Generation African Researchers
As announced just days ago, the much-anticipated Functional Genomics Course officially commenced this morning at CRID, marking a significant milestone in capacity-building for biomedical research on the continent. This three-day intensive workshop, which runs from August 19 to 21, 2026, has brought together a select cohort of ten promising young researchers (one international Participant from prétoria university South Africa and one from Ghana ) drawn from diverse yet interconnected disciplines, including Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, and Entomology. Designed specifically for beginner to intermediate-level scientists, the programme aims to bridge the critical gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, offering participants a comprehensive foundation in both functional genomics techniques and the broader principles of systems biology. The training, generously funded by the African Research Excellence Fund (AREF), represents the natural progression of Dr. Mersimine Kouamo’s restitutional training following her 6 months stay at IMBB-FORTH in Greece, where she capacitated on transgenic Drosophila flies generation in functional genomics.
The opening ceremony set an inspiring tone for the days ahead, with Professor Wondji Charles, CRID’s Executive Director, delivering a warm and motivational address to the assembled participants. In his remarks, he underscored the prestigious nature of the training they are about to receive, emphasising that such specialised opportunities are both rare and transformative for early-career scientists in Africa. Professor Wondji extended his best wishes to the cohort for a productive and enriching stay at CRID, encouraging them to fully immerse themselves in the learning process and to forge lasting collaborations with their peers. As the workshop gets fully underway, the atmosphere is one of palpable enthusiasm and determination, with these ten researchers poised to become the vanguard of functional genomics expertise in their respective fields.

STRENGTHENING MALARIA PARASITE CULTURE AND ANTIMALARIAL DRUG SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING CAPACITY AT CRID-CAMEROON
From 20 July to 15 August 2026, two CRID researchers, Drs. Glwadys Cheteug and Aline Bouopda, had participated in a practical training on In Vitro Culture of Plasmodium falciparum and Antimalarial Drug Susceptibility Assays at the Malaria Research Unit (MRU) of Institut Pasteur Cambodge (IPC).
Practical training
This practical training forms part of a broader scientific collaboration between CRID and IPC aimed at strengthening the capacity of CRID to investigate and functionally validate antimalarial drug resistance phenotypes. A key objective of this initiative is to establish a parasite culture platform at CRID, which will support the generation of in vitro data, strengthen antimalarial drug resistance surveillance, and contribute to future research activities. The training was initiated under the leadership of Prof. Charles Wondji, Executive Director of CRID and one of the Principal Investigator (PI) of ICEMR-EMERGENT in Cameroon, and Dr. Emmanuel Elanga, Co-Investigator and Coordinator of the Project, in collaboration with Dr. Jean Popovici, Head of the Malaria Research Unit at IPC.
Scientific aspects
The scientific aspects of the training and bench supervision were led by Dr. Brice Feufack, while the practical sessions and technical bench support were provided by Baura Tat, a Research Engineer, who provided hands-on training in Plasmodium falciparum in vitro culture and antimalarial drug susceptibility testing techniques.
This capacity-building initiative represents an important step toward developing sustainable malaria research infrastructure and expertise at CRID. The skills acquired through this training will contribute to strengthening antimalarial drug resistance research and surveillance in Cameroon, while creating a foundation for future scientific collaborations and research opportunities.
Background
As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Antimalarial drug resistance research and surveillance capacity in Cameroon, CRID throughout the ICEMR-EMERGENT Project funded by National Institute of Health (NIH) implemented a capacity-building initiative in collaboration with the IPC, Cambodia.
