United Nations International Day of Clean Air for blue skies-07 September 2023

Dear all,

Today, 7 September is Clean Air Day. The Association for the Promotion of Youth Leadership, Advocacy and Volunteerism Cameroon (APYLAV) joins its partners in the Global Youth Strategy (GYS) on Air Pollution and Climate Health, European Lung Foundation with the Healthy Lungs for Life grant, World Heart Federation, Global Asthma Network and more to highlight air pollution as the major risk factor for lung and heart diseases, as well as the urgent need to build partnerships to increase investments to reduce the burden of air pollution on health at local, national, regional and global level.

This years event was hosted by the Centre Regional Delegation of Public Health with the Minister of Public Health and the Minister Communication Represented. They both called for more urgent actions on the impact of air pollution on health and the environment. Also pledging to support our actions both at the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Communications.

Air pollution is now the leading cause of premature and avoidable deaths globally, responsible for over 7 million deaths annually. In Africa and other LMICs the brunt of air pollution is being felt on children, youths and women with a rapidly growing youthful population, limited awareness and economic hardship being key challenges. As a result, many people are yet to accept and understand the relationship between air pollution as a risk factor for rampant diseases. Strong advocacy to highlight the impacts of air pollution on health within educational and health settings are key to reducing this burden, as well as strengthened acceptance and understanding of the problem by all
