From Framework to Action: Africa advances its AMR implementation roadmap

Today in Mombasa, Kenya, African Union institutions, Member States, Regional Economic Communities and partners are working together to translate the African Union Framework for Antimicrobial Resistance Control 2026–2030 into a practical continental implementation roadmap.

For AU-IAPSC, this process is especially important because a truly effective One Health response must fully recognize the role of plant health.

National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) are essential partners in strengthening surveillance, phytosanitary measures, laboratory capacity, responsible antimicrobial use, plant biosecurity and integrated pest management. These functions directly contribute to reducing antimicrobial resistance risks across plants, food systems, animals, people and the environment.

The roadmap development process provides an opportunity to move from commitment to measurable action by defining clear outcomes, activities, indicators, responsibilities, timelines and accountability mechanisms.

AU-IAPSC remains committed to working with Africa CDC, AU-IBAR, AU-PANVAC, Member States, RECs, the IPPC, FAO, WHO, WOAH, UNEP and other partners to ensure that plant health is firmly embedded in Africa’s AMR and One Health agenda.

One Health is stronger when plant health is at the table.
