On 30 May 2026, Lola Leadership Foundation successfully relaunched its pedagogical program, Weekend Documentary.
The session focused on the theme: "When Neighbors Become Enemies: Confronting Afrophobia and Tribalism in Our Communities." Through the screening and analysis of a BBC documentary on xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa, participants examined the deeper factors driving division, intolerance, and social conflict.
Three key lessons emerged:
1. Leadership matters. When governments struggle to address unemployment, economic opportunities, and social frustrations, divisions among communities can become more pronounced.
2. Hate must be addressed at its roots. Combating hate speech is important, but lasting solutions require tackling the underlying prejudices, fears, and grievances that fuel intolerance.
3. Unity is built, not decreed. Sustainable unity cannot be imposed through slogans or declarations alone. It is constructed through inclusive leadership, strong institutions, mutual respect, and a shared sense of belonging.
The conversation served as a reminder that Africa's progress depends on the collective commitment to peace, social cohesion, responsible leadership, and active citizenship. A stronger and more united continent begins with stronger and more united communities.
