# Cameroon Cannot Build Peace on the Suffering of Its People

How many more children must be abused before action is taken? How many more women must suffer violence before those in power listen?

Cameroon is facing a growing human rights crisis that can no longer be ignored. Recent reports have raised disturbing allegations, including the reported r**e of a 15-year-old girl by a commander and the brutal assault of a woman by a soldier. These reports add to longstanding concerns from communities across the country.

In many remote villages, schoolgirls continue to become pregnant by adult men, including individuals in positions of authority. Communities often remain silent, victims fear retaliation, and families struggle to find justice. In Esu and surrounding areas, residents have expressed alarm over numerous cases involving underage girls and adult men, yet accountability remains painfully absent.

The problem goes beyond individual cases. When those entrusted with protecting citizens are themselves accused of abuse, public confidence in the justice system begins to collapse. Human rights defenders and civil society organizations frequently report obstacles when attempting to investigate allegations involving members of the security forces.

The Anglophone regions have for years been the subject of serious human rights concerns. National and international organizations have documented allegations of excessive force, extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, arbitrary arrests, and the destruction of civilian property during the ongoing conflict. While authorities have occasionally announced disciplinary measures against some officers, many observers continue to raise concerns about impunity and the lack of transparent prosecutions for senior officials.

We therefore call on the Government of Cameroon, the Ministry of Defence, and the Secretary of State for Defence in charge of the National Gendarmerie, Galax Yves Landry Etoga, to support independent, transparent, and impartial investigations into all credible allegations of abuse.

No uniform should place anyone above the law.

No child should live in fear.

No victim should be denied justice.

The people of Cameroon deserve accountability, dignity, and protection. Silence only protects abusers. Justice protects the nation.

Na Cameroon this ooh!

So make person help me understand. For morning, na musician wey dey perform with fire, fashion and all kind stage drama. For afternoon, na "Woman King" with crown and traditional authority. For evening, na boxing champion for Facebook comments section, dropping F-bomb left, right and center.

Ah ah! Which ministry be this?

Traditional ruler wey critics talk small, she answer with enough curses to fill one market square. Elders wey dey hear am fit check their ears twice: "Na this be royal language now?"

I be think say crown come with small dignity, patience and wisdom. Nowadays e be like crown come with microphone and unlimited data bundle.

One hand dey hold royal staff. Other hand dey hold keyboard for online wrestling.

Respect for tradition no mean say person no fit enjoy modern life. But if every disagreement turn to insult competition, then where the royal class dey? Where the honor dey? Where the "my people, let us maintain peace" speech dey?

At this rate, if village meeting happen, people no go know whether dem attend palace gathering or music award after-party.

Cameroon, my country. Every day na new episode. Even Netflix fit surrender.

What wuna think? Na evolution of traditional leadership or we don enter Season 7 of "Things We Never Expected To See"?This version keeps the tone humorous and satirical while avoiding personal abuse.

Ohyee
One military man catch him wife dey cheat with another man for house. E shock am, e pain am, and e get every right to vex. But wetin happen next na wetin dey make many people talk.

Truth be say, betrayal dey hurt. If your partner cheat on you, anger go come naturally. But no matter how painful e be, violence no be the answer.

Why some people dey quick beat woman, torture am, or even kill am because of cheating? Why person go assault animal or fellow human being because of relationship matter? If trust don break, waka comot, end the relationship, seek justice if necessary, but no raise hand.

Some comments talk say, "She lucky say e no kill am." Lucky ke? Since when murder become normal reaction to heartbreak?

If woman cheat, na wrong. If man cheat, na wrong too. But cheating no be death sentence. Nobody deserve beating, torture, or killing because of relationship wahala.

The funniest part for this story be say the husband no touch the other man. Yet some people still dey justify violence against the woman. Make we stop normalizing abuse. Vex if you must, leave if you must, but no turn yourself to judge, jury, and executioner.

Respect human life. Reject domestic violence. This version keeps the story's context but shifts the focus to condemning abuse and violence rather than celebrating it.

Cameroon produces about 1,000 new doctors every year. Nigeria produces about 3,000–3,500.

Yet both nations are losing their best-trained medical professionals at an alarming rate.

In Cameroon, many doctors leave within a few years of graduation. In Nigeria, thousands have emigrated in search of better pay, safer working conditions, and greater opportunities.

While governments celebrate the number of doctors graduating, hospitals are struggling to keep enough doctors at patients' bedsides.

The consequences are devastating.

A pregnant woman waits longer for care.
A child dies from a treatable illness.
An emergency patient arrives at a hospital with too few doctors on duty.

People do not die because Africa lacks talent.

People die because the doctors who could save them are being pushed away by broken systems.

Every doctor who leaves carries years of training, experience, and hope. Every empty hospital post represents countless lives left vulnerable.

The tragedy is not that doctors dream of a better future.

The tragedy is that Nigeria and Cameroon have made it easier to leave than to stay.

A nation can survive losing oil, gold, or money.

But when it loses the people trained to save lives, the cost is measured in funerals.
"The greatest brain drain is not the loss of professionals; it is the loss of the lives they would have saved."

Cameroon remains one of the few countries where both Clade I and Clade II strains of mpox circulate simultaneously. While health experts continue to monitor localized outbreaks, the reality is that our healthcare system remains underfunded and neglected.

Many of our politicians travel to France, America, and other Western countries whenever they need medical care, while the hospitals serving ordinary Cameroonians often resemble overcrowded prisons rather than centers of healing.

Perhaps if those making decisions were required to rely on the same hospitals as the people they govern, healthcare reform would become an urgent national priority.

A nation's greatness is not measured by the number of officials who can afford treatment abroad, but by the quality of care available to its poorest citizen at home.

Cameroon deserves hospitals that heal, not hospitals that people fear

Today, we remember with heavy hearts the late Fon of Esu, a man of vision, courage, and remarkable character whose life was tragically cut short on his journey home after the coronation of the Fon of Weh.

His passing was not only a loss to Esu but to the entire Menchum Division. In him, many saw a leader chosen for a special purpose—a man destined to help shape a brighter future for his people. Together with the Fon of Weh, he represented a rare generation of traditional rulers whose integrity, wisdom, and commitment to development inspired hope across our land.

Many believed that these two great leaders would forge an alliance so strong that Esu and Weh would become shining examples of progress, unity, and prosperity in Menchum—our own “London cities” of the division. They were men of valor, men who understood that true leadership is service, sacrifice, and vision.

Though wicked hands may have succeeded in taking away the Fon of Esu, they could not destroy the dream he carried, nor can they erase the legacy he left behind. His memory remains alive in the hearts of his people and in the aspirations of all who long for peace, unity, and development.

Today, the Fon of Weh continues to carry that torch. Despite intimidation and attempts by some to undermine his authority, he remains committed to keeping the light of leadership, hope, and progress burning in our villages. And one truth remains clear: the people of Weh stand firmly behind their son, their King. They know his worth, they understand his vision, and they will not sit silently while forces of division seek to weaken the institution that unites them.

May the soul of the late Fon of Esu rest in perfect peace. May his sacrifice never be forgotten. And may God continue to strengthen the Fon of Weh and all leaders who choose the difficult path of service, honor, and truth.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
