Accra is currently hosting a critical moment for the continent, bringing together African negotiators to align a unified position ahead of COP31 and COP32. This meeting comes at a time when global climate negotiations are under pressure and Africa is expected to speak with clarity, strength, and direction.

With over 630 million Africans without electricity, energy poverty is a direct barrier to adaptation, resilience, and productivity.

โ€œClimate finance is not charity.โ€ It must be transparent, accessible, and reflect real needs, with clear criteria and direct access for affected countries.

Climate injustice is rooted in historical systems of extraction and exploitation. These realities must be acknowledged and reflected in todayโ€™s negotiations and finance systems.

Across his intervention, one idea stands out. Africa has the numbers, the moral argument, and the resources. What has been missing is the consistent ability to turn these into negotiating power.

He closed with a question that remains central. If Africa is to arrive at COP32 not as participants but as agenda setters, what must change starting now.

After two intense weeks of negotiations, discussions, advocacy, side events and demonstrations, COP30 has officially come to an end. Yet the YAF Africa movement keeps moving forward. Our fight for more than double adaptation finance for Africa continues, and today we are sharing our official YAF Africa Initiative Statement on COP30 Adaptation Finance.

This declaration calls on all stakeholders to scale up ambition, ensure transparency, reduce debt pressures, and place African priorities at the center of climate finance, including meaningful youth participation.

ACSEA delivered a clear and compelling message during the conversation at the COP30 side event in the Liberia Pavilion. Mr. Eugene Nforngwa, Director of Programs, highlighted how mining, energy access and national climate goals are deeply interconnected. His intervention pointed toward reforms that uplift communities, strengthen governance and improve clean energy access for households near extraction sites.

Mining shapes national energy demand and provides minerals essential for transition technologies. Governments need firm low-carbon targets for mining companies and stronger integration of the sector into climate plans. Many countries still face financial gaps in developing mineral resources, so climate finance must support mining reform and community-level energy access.

Opaque investments undermine accountability. Hidden contracts open space for tax evasion and harmful practices. Public disclosure of mining contracts, permits and concessions protects the public interest and strengthens oversight.

Communities living near extraction zones deserve meaningful ownership, influence and a real voice in decisions shaping their land and future.

Energy transition must deliver access for millions living in energy poverty.
๐ŸŸข Mining and energy systems are inseparable; one drives the other.
๐ŸŸข Climate plans must include the full impact of mining on emissions.
๐ŸŸข Countries need a path that brings climate finance into mining and energy access.
๐ŸŸข Participation must give communities power and ownership.
๐ŸŸข Mining contracts belong in the public domain.
๐ŸŸข Communities must hold shares in operations on their land.

The YAF team and ambassadors shared their experience and presented their activities during the session โ€œYouth-led advocacy for elevating climate adaptation finance in Africaโ€ at the African Development Bank Pavilion during ACS II in Addis Ababa.

It was a very rich and inspiring session that underscored the vital role of young people in advancing climate adaptation finance across Africa. Together, we highlighted youth-led solutions that strengthen community resilience and ensure that adaptation finance responds to real needs on the ground.

We warmly thank our partners for their support, with special recognition to the African Adaptation Initiative (AAI) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) for championing youth voices and creating spaces that empower the next generation to shape Africaโ€™s climate future.

He reminded participants of the importance of Africaโ€™s continued presence in the global climate arena: โ€œAt some point, we may be discouraged from participating in these international negotiations because most of the time, we come back empty-handed. We should never make that mistake. If you are not there, others will go ahead and define what the future looks like for you.โ€

Dr. Augustine strongly emphasized the centrality of adaptation. In his words, โ€œAdaptation, ladies and gentlemen, adaptation, adaptation, adaptation, remains a key priority for us. Over the last years, we've seen adaptation taking the center stage. This is because, as Africa, we've insisted so our work is not in vain.โ€

On climate finance, he denounced the injustice: โ€œWhen you look at the urgency of this continent, and you see that 56% of the climate finance they received in 2021 or so was in loans and not grants, it becomes unfortunate. I would say it is immoral.โ€

During the SB62 climate talks in Bonn, a conversation led by Sir Charles Mwangi, Head of Programmes at PACJA, focused on the challenges linked to adaptation finance, the injustices facing Africa, and the importance of preparing young people to respond.

Dr. Augustine B. Njamnshi, Co-founder and Chair of Technical and Political Affairs of PACJA and Executive Director of ACSEA shared a reflection based on more than two decades of experience.

He explained how African countries have consistently compromised in climate negotiations, giving up more than they receive, just to keep the multilateral process alive.

He used a simple example to describe the injustice. If ten people are invited to a birthday party and two arrive early and eat eight slices of cake, it is not fair to ask the other eight to share the two remaining slices equally. This is how carbon space has been consumed. Developed countries arrived early and used most of it. Now they ask everyone else to share the little that is left.

Dr. Njamnshi also spoke about the issue of loans in adaptation finance. Article 9.1 of the Paris Agreement clearly states that developed countries must provide finance for developing countries. But in practice, most of the support for adaptation comes in the form of loans. That means Africa ends up paying for climate impacts it did not cause. This creates a reverse flow of finance, moving from those affected to those responsible.

To address this, PACJA supports the training of young Africans through initiatives like the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice and the Youth for Adaptation Finance in Africa. These initiatives aim to build understanding, skills, and leadership among the next generation, so they can speak up for what is fair and just.

Another speaker from the Africa Research and Impact Network underlined key gaps in adaptation. Adaptation is still perceived as a social issue and attracts limited investment. Local communities lack support to define priorities and access resources. There is also a need to link advocacy with solid evidence on what works. Without this connection, many demands remain ignored.

This discussion at reminds us that the fight for adaptation finance is not just about money. It is about dignity, accountability, and the right of every person to a livable future.
