From the 6th–7th of May 2026, Women in Global Health Cameroon participated in the National Workshop on the Protection and Psychological Support of Women and Vulnerable Persons Facing Gender-Based Violence in Cameroon, held under the leadership of the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya.

This important gathering brought together institutions, civil society organizations, health professionals, and humanitarian actors committed to strengthening prevention, protection, and psychosocial support mechanisms for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

In Cameroon, women and girls continue to face heightened vulnerabilities in humanitarian and crisis settings, with growing needs for psychosocial care, safe spaces, survivor-centered services, and community-based protection systems. Recent reports by United Nations Population Fund highlight the increasing demand for GBV prevention and response services, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

At Women in Global Health Cameroon, we recognize that addressing GBV is not only a protection issue, but also a public health and human rights priority. Women cannot fully participate in leadership, health systems, and community development while facing violence, trauma, and exclusion.

Our participation in this workshop reaffirmed our commitment to:
• Advocating for survivor-centered and gender-responsive health systems
• Strengthening psychosocial support and referral pathways for vulnerable populations
• Promoting the inclusion of women in health leadership and humanitarian decision-making
• Supporting community awareness and prevention initiatives against GBV

We commend the leadership of the First Lady of Cameroon and all partners working to advance protection, dignity, and mental wellbeing for women and vulnerable communities.

Together, we must continue building safer, more equitable, and more inclusive systems where every woman and girl can live free from violence.
