Yesterday, we celebrated the International Day of Peace 🌍✨. As we reflect on the importance of harmony and tranquility, our hearts go out to those affected by conflict, particularly in Cameroon's Northwest and Southwest regions. The ongoing crisis in these areas has brought immense suffering to communities, disrupting lives and hindering development. It's crucial we amplify voices calling for dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful resolution.

We are proud to share that our founder participated in a impactful regional peacebuilding workshop organized by the Programme for Central Africa (PCC) in Cameroon. The workshop, themed "Advocacy for Peace Education in Youth Settings in Cameroon", emphasized the vital role young people play in fostering peace and stability. By equipping youth with peace education, we nurture a generation committed to building bridges and promoting understanding. Let's continue advocating for peace, tolerance, and unity in Cameroon and beyond! 🙏 "

18/12/2024

Today, on International Migrants Day, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. Migrants bring unique skills, experiences, and perspectives that enrich our communities, drive economic growth, and promote cultural diversity.

As we acknowledge the positive impact of migration, it's essential to recognize the challenges and risks associated with irregular migration. Crossing high seas, jungles, deserts, or engaging in any form of illegal immigration can be perilous, often resulting in loss of life, human trafficking, and exploitation.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), many Cameroonian migrants have fallen victim to these risks. IOM statistics reveal that:

Between 2014 and 2020, over 12,000 Cameroonian migrants were rescued or intercepted in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to reach Europe.
In 2020 alone, IOM reported that 2,300 Cameroonian migrants were stranded in Niger, many of whom had been trafficked or exploited.
IOM estimates that thousands of Cameroonian migrants are living in irregular situations in countries such as Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways. Instead of risking their lives through irregular migration, Cameroonian migrants deserve access to legal channels for migration, education, and employment.

By working together to create a more just and equitable migration system, we can unlock the full potential of migration to drive sustainable development, promote peace, and foster greater understanding and cooperation among nations.

So, let's stand together to celebrate the contributions of migrants, while also promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways that respect the dignity and human rights of all individuals.

Yesterday, our dedicated volunteers joined forces with FIDA Cameroon to implement a crucial project: Increasing inclusive participation in Cameroon's election and political process. We hit the ground running in the Mutengene community, sensitizing people in markets, vocational training centers, bike riders' stop points, and other areas.

This project, funded by the US Embassy, aims to promote civic engagement and ensure that every citizen's voice is heard. As we count down to the 2025 presidential election, it's essential that we empower Cameroon's youth to perform their civic responsibility of voting.

Why is this campaign important?

- Inclusive participation: Every citizen deserves a say in shaping Cameroon's future. By promoting inclusive participation, we can ensure that all voices are heard, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status.
- Civic engagement: Voting is a fundamental right and a crucial aspect of civic engagement. By encouraging youth to participate in the electoral process, we can foster a culture of active citizenship and community involvement.
- Accountability: When citizens participate in elections, they hold their leaders accountable for their actions. This promotes transparency, good governance, and a more responsive government.

Don't miss the opportunity to make your voice heard!

Elecam Cameroon will open its doors for voter card acquisition in January 2025. We urge all eligible Cameroonians to seize this window of opportunity to register and exercise their right to vote.

Together, let's empower Cameroon's youth to shape their country's future. Share this post with your friends and family, and let's make our voices heard in the 2025 presidential election!

Today, our Executive Director participated in a pivotal capacity-building workshop focused on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Human Rights, held at the Regional Delegation MINJEC building in Buea. Organized by CIDA, in partnership with UNFPA Cameroon, this event brought together experts and stakeholders to tackle the pressing issue of GBV. The workshop consisted of two insightful panel sessions, each addressing a critical aspect of GBV mitigation and response.

The first panel discussion, moderated by the Representative of the Regional Delegate for MINJEC, centered on "Youth Involvement in Mitigating/Combating GBV." The panelists emphasized the vital role young people play in preventing GBV, particularly since many cases originate within the home. They stressed the importance of educating and sensitizing children and youths about GBV in schools, fostering a culture of awareness, empathy, and responsibility. By empowering youths to speak out against GBV, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities.

The second panel session featured Magistrate Kilo Emmanuel and the Buea Prison Superintendent, who delved into the topic of "Reducing GBV and Human Rights Violations in Grassroots Communities." They highlighted the crucial need for reporting GBV cases to the appropriate channels while maintaining confidentiality and safety. By raising awareness about the devastating effects of GBV in grassroots communities, we can empower survivors to break their silence and seek help. The session was interactive, with the audience engaging in thoughtful discussions and receiving comprehensive answers from the panelists.

The workshop concluded on a high note, with participants feeling motivated and inspired to continue the fight against GBV. As we move forward, it is essential that we prioritize youth involvement, education, and community engagement in our efforts to prevent and respond to GBV. By working together, we can create a society that values and respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, particularly women and girls who are disproportionately affected by GBV

TOGETHER WITH GBV Justice Alliance

As part of our ongoing 16 Days Advocacy Program, the GBV JUSTICE ALLIANCE team visited Charity Nursery and Primary School in Mile 16 Bolifamba. Our mission was to educate and empower the young minds on the importance of ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWGs).

_Participatory Approach_

We employed a participatory approach, engaging the students in an interactive discussion on the devastating effects of GBV and VAWGs. We encouraged them to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns, creating a safe and supportive environment for open dialogue.

_Empowering the Next Generation_

Our conversation with the students centered on the vital role they can play in eradicating GBV and VAWGs. We emphasized the importance of:

1. _Respect and empathy_: Treating others with respect, kindness, and empathy.
2. _Equality and fairness_: Promoting equality and fairness in all aspects of life.
3. _Speaking out_: Encouraging students to speak out against GBV and VAWGs, and to support those affected.

_Inspiring a Brighter Future_

The visit was a resounding success, with the students demonstrating a keen understanding of the issues and a willingness to make a positive impact. As we continue our advocacy efforts, we remain committed to empowering the next generation to create a brighter, more equitable future for all.

Our Executive Director, Jack Ezeh recently took to the airwaves to raise awareness about the GBV Justice Alliance and its mission to eradicate Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWGs) in the Buea community.

During the radio campaign, shed light on the critical issue of toxic masculinity, which is a major contributor to GBV and VAWGs. He emphasized the need to challenge and redefine traditional notions of masculinity that perpetuate aggression, dominance, and control.

key messages conveyed during the radio campaign include:

Toxic masculinity is a learned behavior: It is not inherent to men, but rather a product of societal norms and expectations.
Toxic masculinity perpetuates GBV: It contributes to a culture of violence and aggression, which can lead to physical, emotional, and psychological harm against women and girls.
We need to redefine masculinity: We must challenge traditional notions of masculinity and promote a more inclusive and equitable understanding of what it means to be a man.
Men can be allies: Men can play a critical role in preventing GBV and promoting gender equality by speaking out against toxic masculinity and supporting women's rights.

The radio campaign ended with a call to action, encouraging listeners to join the GBV Justice Alliance in its mission to eradicate GBV and VAWGs in the Buea community. Jack Ezeh urged listeners to:

Educate themselves: Learn more about GBV and VAWGs, and the ways in which they can perpetuate or prevent them.
Speak out: Use their voices to challenge toxic masculinity and promote gender equality.
Support survivors: Offer support and resources to survivors of GBV and VAWGs.
Join the movement: Become part of the GBV Justice Alliance and work together to create a safer and more equitable community for all.
