We are delighted to share that Paul has been promoted to Site Controller here at Ape Action Africa! 💚🦍

As a Cameroonian national, Paul’s connection to the wildlife and natural heritage of his country runs deep, and it shows in everything he does. In his new role Paul will be assisting our manager in the day to day running of the sanctuary, helping to make sure our staff and residents are all well looked after.

Paul told us that working within conservation is something he has always wanted to do, and his dedication and commitment to the care of our residents speaks for itself. We could not think of anyone more deserving of this promotion.

Congratulations Paul, we are so proud to have you stepping into this role. 💚

To celebrate the new goal posts, the village of Ekali invited us to mark the occasion with a friendly match, and our very own Silverbacks were more than happy to accept! ⚽🦍

The Silverbacks, made up of our incredible workforce here at the sanctuary, represented Ape Action Africa with everything they had on the pitch. The final score? A 1-1 draw, and honestly the perfect result. Because this was never really about winning. It was about community, about the relationships we have built with the people who live alongside us, and about sharing a good afternoon together.

Thank you to the village of Ekali for having us. We cannot wait for the rematch! 😄💚

As part of Parry’s story, we wanted to introduce Dr Peter Sedman, the human surgeon who flew out from the UK alongside Dr Romain Pizzi to assist with Parry’s complex surgery. 🦍💚

In this video Dr Peter tells us a little about his background as an abdominal human surgeon and his long standing working relationship with Dr Romain, having spent around 15 years together exploring the similarities and differences between human and animal surgery.

He also shares something that means a great deal to us. Having seen the care we provide here firsthand, he said it is every bit as good as anything he has ever worked with. Coming from someone of Dr Peter’s experience, that means everything.

Dr Peter, it has been an honour. Thank you for making the journey out to support Ape Action Africa and for everything you gave to Parry’s care. 💚🦍

We are really pleased to share that we have built a brand new set of goal posts for the village of Ekali! ⚽💚

Working alongside and supporting the communities around us is something we care deeply about, and this is one small way of giving something back to the people who share this land with us.

And to celebrate, the village of Ekali have invited us for a friendly football match, where our very own Silverbacks, made up of our incredible workforce here at the sanctuary, will represent Ape Action Africa on the pitch. We cannot wait stay tuned! 😄

In this video our head vet, Dr Julieta, shares her experience of working alongside Dr Romain Pizzi and Dr Peter Sedman during Parry’s surgery. 🦍💚

Finding the right specialists for a case as complex as Parry’s is never straightforward, and Dr Julieta takes us through the process of how that came together. While the surgery itself was incredibly challenging, she describes it as an amazing opportunity, both to learn and to build a strong working relationship with two highly experienced surgeons.

Although this is not the first time Dr Julieta has collaborated with outside specialists, cases like Parry’s are a reminder of just how dedicated our team are to giving every single resident the very best care possible, no matter how complex the road to recovery may be.

We are so proud to have Dr Julieta leading our veterinary team here at Ape Action Africa. 💚🦍

We were thrilled to welcome Ambassador Naeem Khan, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Angola and Burundi, to Ape Action Africa recently. 🌿💚

Ambassador Khan came to see the work we do here at the sanctuary firsthand, taking a tour to meet our residents and learn about the conservation work that goes on every day at Ape Action. We were so pleased to be able to share our story with him.

In the video above he shares his thoughts on what he saw during his visit.

We hope to welcome you back again soon, Ambassador Khan. 💚🦍

We are delighted to welcome to Ape Action Africa! 🌿💚

Boy joins us from .amsterdam , Netherlands, and has been working with primates and enrichment for many years, including previous visits to sanctuaries here in Cameroon.

Boy is spending time getting to know our primates, learning about each species, understanding their individual histories, and seeing what enrichment they are currently receiving. When he returns home he will begin putting together a long term enrichment plan, and we are pleased to say this will not be his last visit as he will be returning to implement the programme and set it up for long term use.

We asked Boy how he has found his time here so far and he told us that from the moment he arrived he felt genuinely welcomed by everyone. He described being here in the forest as amazing and said the eagerness to learn he has seen from everyone he has met has made a real impression on him.

A huge thank you to .amsterdam for making this visit possible. 💚🦍

Part 2: Parry’s Update 🦍💚
Three days on from his operation and we have some really encouraging news to share.
Dr Romain is back with an update on how Parry is getting on, and things are looking positive. The wound is staying closed, which is a great sign, and Parry is already starting to show movement in his toes. Even more promising is the fact that when he gets up to turn he is beginning to bear a little weight on his leg.
For anyone who has been following Parry’s journey, you will know how much this means. It has been a long road, and there is still more ahead, but right now we are feeling hopeful.
Well done Parry. Keep going. 🦍
Stay tuned for the next instalment of Parry’s journey coming soon. 🦍

March employee of the month is our incredible vet nurse, Noel! 🌿💚

Noel is one of those people who just gets on with it, day in, day out, making sure our residents are healthy, comfortable and cared for. From administering medication to keeping a close eye on the wellbeing of our chimps and gorillas, Noel’s work happens quietly in the background but the impact is felt by every single primate in our care.

The dedication it takes to do what Noel does, showing up every day with patience and care for some of the most vulnerable residents in our sanctuary, does not go unnoticed. We are so grateful to have him on our team.

Thank you, Noel. The primates are lucky to have you. 🦍

Back in 2018, Bobo was spotted doing something that stopped everyone in their tracks. 🦍

Cameroon’s biggest primate had found Cameroon’s smallest primate, a bush baby, and what followed was something none of us will ever forget. Rather than moving on, Bobo cradled the tiny primate gently, watched over it, and let it climb all over him without a flicker of discomfort. For hours, the two just shared that space together. Eventually, when their quiet time was over, Bobo returned the bush baby safely to the trees.

Anyone who knows Bobo won’t be surprised. He has always been that way. Calm, patient, gentle. But moments like this still take your breath away, because they remind you just how complex and feeling our residents really are.

This is why we do what we do. 💚

Part 1:

Many of you will remember Parry’s original surgery after breaking his leg.

Unfortunately, his recovery did not go entirely to plan. Because he began bearing weight on the leg too soon, healing was disrupted and further damage was caused. It became clear that more specialist intervention was needed to give him the best possible chance going forward.

In response, two highly experienced surgeons, Dr Romain Pizzi, a world leading exotic wildlife veterinarian and Dr Peter Sedman a human surgeon, flew themselves out to the forest from the UK to assist. They brought specialist equipment with them and carried out further surgery to reinforce Parry’s leg with metal supports, helping to stabilise the injury and prepare him for the next stage of recovery.

In this video, Dr Romain explains what happened, what the team had to do, and how they worked to give Parry the best possible future.

Stay tuned for the next instalment of parry’s journey coming soon 🦍
