Our 5-day working session in Vietnam ended on May 8th.

We were honored to participate alongside representatives from Africa, Asia, and other low-resource settings, where discussions focused on practical ways to improve basic swimming and water safety in communities with limited resources.

During the sessions, we learned about:
🛟 Water survival skills
📋 The importance of informed consent in swimming and water safety programs
🚨 Emergency action plans during water-related activities

These are lessons we believe are important for communities in Cameroon, where many families rely on rivers, beaches, lakes, and other water bodies in their daily lives.

As participants, the experience gave us an opportunity to learn from different community realities, exchange ideas, and reflect on approaches that can help improve safety in our own context.

We remain committed to using this knowledge in our awareness activities, training sessions, and community engagement efforts to help reduce drowning risks and promote safer practices around water.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to conversations focused on saving lives.

To our people in Limbe, Douala, Bamenda, and beyond, please read this carefully.

In recent days, flooding has hit several parts of our country. We have seen images and videos circulated on social media. We have heard stories. And we are deeply concerned, not just for property, but for lives.

Floodwater is not just water. It carries hidden currents strong enough to sweep a person off their feet. It hides open drains, broken ground, and live electrical wires beneath its surface. It carries disease. It moves fast and without warning.

Yet many of us walk through it. Children play in it. Drivers and bike riders push their vehicles through it. We understand that sometimes there seems to be no other choice. We want you to know the dangers, because knowledge can help keep you safe.

🚫 PLEASE AVOID THESE DURING FLOODING:

❌ Walking through floodwater, even 15cm of fast-moving water can knock an adult off balance. You cannot see what is beneath the surface.

❌ Driving through flooded roads, Floodwater hides the road's depth. Many vehicles and lives have been lost this way. Turn back. No destination is worth your life.

❌ Allowing children near floodwater, Children are at the highest risk. A moment of inattention is all it takes. Keep them indoors and away from drains, rivers, and waterlogged areas.

❌ Touching electrical poles, wires, or appliances near water. Flooded areas and electricity are a deadly combination. Stay far away.

❌ Swimming or crossing rivers and streams that are swollen. What looks passable can change in seconds. Swollen rivers are unpredictable and powerful.

❌ Ignoring early warnings and alerts. If authorities advise evacuation or if water is rising around you, do not wait. Move to higher ground immediately.

❌ Drinking or using floodwater for cooking. It is contaminated. Protect your health and that of your family.

✅ HOW TO STAY SAFE:

✔ Move to higher ground early; do not wait until the water reaches your door.
✔ Keep emergency contacts saved and phones charged.
✔ Prepare a small emergency bag: water, food, documents, first aid, and medication.
✔ Check on your elderly neighbours and those with young children.
✔ Follow updates from local authorities and trusted news sources.
✔ If someone is swept by water, do NOT jump in after them, call for help, and find something to extend to them (rope, cloth, a stick).

We say this not to frighten, but to protect. Floods are dangerous because they are familiar; we have seen them before and survived. But survival is not the same as safety.

At Nathan B. Ajode Foundation, we exist because drowning is preventable. And so are many of the tragedies that floods bring.

Please share this post. Your share could save someone's life today.

🌊 Stay safe. Stay aware. Look out for one another.

Children can drown in less than 2 inches of water.

A bucket. A puddle. A bathtub.

These are the silent dangers that parents often don't think about, and they cost young lives every year.

Here are 5 home water hazards to childproof TODAY:

1. 🛁 Never leave a child unattended in the bath, even for 30 seconds
2. 🪣 Empty all buckets, bowls, and containers after use
3. 🚽 Keep toilet lids closed (especially for toddlers under 3)
4. 🌊 Fence garden pools or water features, minimum 4ft fence
5. 🚿 Drain paddling pools immediately after use

Supervision is the single most powerful prevention tool.

Every 2 minutes, someone drowns somewhere in the world. 🌊

That's not a statistic. That's a life. A family shattered. A future erased.

Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, and in many communities in Cameroon, children and young adults are the most vulnerable.

At the NBA Memorial Foundation, we believe drowning is preventable. With awareness. With training. With YOU.

This Month, we're sharing 30 days of facts, tips, and stories to help our communities stay safe around water.

This is really heartbreaking. Taking water safety measures is really important. If you can't swim, don't go into the water; if you doubt your swimming skills, don't go into deep water. I wish many parents could educate their children on water safety awareness

Our hearts are with the bereaved families. Drowning is preventable when the right knowledge is applied. Learning how to swim is a survival skill, and knowing your limits equally matters a lot. This is just a lesson for us to take water safety seriously

Bamenda: Bodies of two teenage girls recovered from Mbatu Dam after weekend tragedy

The bodies of two teenage girls, ages 13 and 16, were recovered from Mbatu Dam in Bamenda II Subdivision on Sunday May 10 after a search lasting more than a day, the Army Rescue Team said.

The girls, identified by family members as Kiara and Princess, from Dchang and Lebialem in the SW region were among dozens of Form Three students who left a local school at down town and trekked about 4 kilometers to the dam on Saturday community members told TEBECK TV BAMENDA

A witness, who identified himself as the twin brother of one of the victims, told TEBECK TV the group was on the shore when three students swam across and back. He said Kiara and Princess then jumped into the dam but did not resurface.

“I only saw the tops of their heads. I threw a stick to them but it didn’t help,” he said.

The Army Rescue Team, led by Senior Warrant Officer Taku Paul, was notified and arrived at the scene Saturday. They began the search and suspended operations at about 7:00 p.m. due to darkness. The team resumed Sunday morning and searched for roughly four hours before pausing again.

Locals had advised that bodies typically surface after three days. One community member familiar with the dam, who has previously assisted in recovering bodies, privately told TEBECK TV, “Let the Army Rescue Team go, they will recover the bodies.”

Shortly after the team left Sunday, residents reported that the remains had surfaced. The Army Rescue Team returned to the site, recovered the bodies, and thanked community members for their assistance.

The remains were taken to the Bamenda Regional Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death, officials said.

May their souls RIP

Drowning survivors bring hope and joy to our hearts, but we shouldn't wait for moments like this to celebrate when there's still much work to be done and more lives to be saved. It's simple, and we can all do it, just by talking to someone about safety measures, we can prevent so many tragedies
