KUMBA I COUNCIL TRAINS, EQUIPS NEIGHBORHOOD COMMITTEES AHEAD OF CLEAN-CITY CONTEST

Kumba I Sub Divisional Council stepped up its drive for a cleaner municipality last Friday, April 17, 2026, by training and empowering coordinators and secretaries of Village/Neighborhood Committees from 19 neighborhoods within its jurisdiction.

The capacity-building session, held at the Council premises, marks a follow-up to the maiden edition of the neighborhood cleanliness competition launched earlier by the Council.

The workshop brought together committee leaders to sharpen their skills in community mobilization, sanitation planning, filing, record-keeping and reporting. This according to Mayor Eseme Moses, is to ensure each neighborhood enters the competition with clear strategy and accountability.

“This is not just about winning a prize. It is about changing habits and taking ownership of our environment,” Mayor emphasized during his opening address.

To back the training with action, the Kumba I Council handed over sets of work equipment to all 19 neighborhoods. The kits included spades, wheelbarrows, rakes, safety gloves, and other basic sanitation tools. Committee heads signed for the equipment on behalf of their communities and pledged to put them to immediate use.

Apart from providing the necessary tools, the Council also invited technical partners from MINDHU, MINDDEVEL, and HYSACAM to the event. Representatives from the three structures did not only provide technical guidance on effective waste management, drainage clearing, and sustainable cleaning practices, but will also constitute the jury team that selects winners of the competition.

The experts walked participants through techniques for unblocking gutters, organizing clean-up campaigns, and maintaining green spaces. They stressed that scoring will weigh both visible cleanliness and community participation.

With training completed and equipment distributed, neighborhoods now begin the competitive phase. Judges will conduct unannounced inspections in the coming weeks using a standardized evaluation sheet covering waste management, drainage, aesthetics, infrastructure care, community participation, and innovation.

The leaders welcomed the initiative, noting that past clean-up efforts often stalled due to lack of tools and coordination and zeal. “Now we have a prize to win, we have knowledge and equipment. The rest is on us,” they echoed.

Mayor Eseme says winners will be announced and awarded at the close of the competition, but insists the real prize is a healthier Kumba I.
