KUMBA I COUNCIL PARTNERS WITH MOUNTAIN UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE TO PROMOTE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION

The Kumba I Sub-Divisional Council, in partnership with the Mountain University Institute (MUI), is announcing a significant educational opportunity for students within the Kumba I Municipality, aimed at making higher education more accessible and affordable.

Under the partnership, students residing within the Kumba I Municipality who wish to pursue an HND at Mountain University Institute will benefit from a 50% reduction in tuition fees. In addition, scholarships are being offered to HND students, with particular attention to internally displaced students.

The initiative forms part of the Council’s commitment to supporting education, empowering young people and creating opportunities for students within the municipality to acquire professional and technical skills that can improve their future prospects.

PROGRAMMES ON OFFER

Mountain University Institute offers a range of programmes, including:

* HND – Higher National Diploma
* BSc – Bachelor of Science
* B-Tech – Bachelor of Technology
* MBA – Master of Business Administration
* M-Tech – Master of Technology

The partnership places particular emphasis on supporting students who may face financial barriers to pursuing higher education, with IDPs and less-privileged students identified as a top priority.

The Kumba I Council encourages eligible students, parents and guardians to take advantage of this opportunity and obtain further information on admission requirements, available programmes and the applicable fee reductions.

COCOA MERCHANT AND PHILANTHROPIST AGBOR TOKO ROSE EXTENDS BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPORT TO WOMEN IN KUMBA.

As families continue preparing for another school year, cocoa merchant and philanthropist Agbor Toko Rose, founder of the Lady A Foundation, is once again putting smiles on the faces of families through her annual back-to-school outreach initiative.

Through the Lady A Foundation, an initiative dedicated to supporting women, less privileged persons and orphans, Agbor Toko Rose has been reaching out to women in different neighborhoods in Kumba, providing them with school books and financial assistance to help ease the burden of preparing their children for the new academic year.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, Agbor Toko Rose and her team made a stop at the Kumba I Sub-Divisional Council, where they extended their generosity beyond their initial target group. All female workers of the Council received books and cash, while women who had come to the Council to access different municipal services also benefited.

In a spontaneous display of generosity, passersby and even some men were not left out, as the philanthropist shared gifts and financial assistance with them as well.

Speaking during the outreach, Agbor Toko Rose explained that the initiative is her personal way of giving back and sharing from the blessings she has received through her business.

“This is my own little way of sharing what God has blessed me with through my business,” she said, emphasizing her desire to support families during a period when the financial demands of sending children back to school can be overwhelming.

The outreach is not a new undertaking for the philanthropist. Last year around the same period, she took the initiative to the Manyu Division, where she carried out a similar back-to-school support campaign. Her continued interventions over the years demonstrate a sustained commitment to touching lives and supporting vulnerable members of society.

The Lady A Foundation’s intervention will continue next week. On Monday, September 14, 2026, Agbor Toko Rose and her team are expected to visit selected orphanages in Kumba, where they will donate school books, school uniforms, food supplies and other essential items to support children in need.

Beyond the material donations, the initiative reflects a broader message of compassion, community solidarity and shared responsibility—reminding society that meaningful change can also begin with individuals choosing to share the little they have with others.

For Agbor Toko Rose and the Lady A Foundation, the back-to-school season is therefore not only about preparing children for the classroom, but also about helping families face the new academic year with dignity, hope and a little less financial pressure.

Macabre Discovery: Newborn Baby Found Dead With Umbilical Cord and Placenta Still Attached in Kumba

Residents of Lawyer Enow Street in Kumba I Sub-Division were awakened to a tragic discovery early Wednesday morning following the finding of a deceased newborn baby in the neighbourhood.

The female infant was reportedly discovered with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached, suggesting that the delivery had occurred only shortly before the discovery. The circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death remain unclear and are currently the subject of a police investigation.

According to preliminary observations at the scene, the baby appeared to have sustained a head injury, with visible blood and what appeared to be an injury to the cranial region. However, the exact cause and manner of death cannot be conclusively established from visual examination alone and will have to be determined by competent medical and investigative authorities.

Residents search for possible mother

Following suspicions that the mother might still be in the vicinity, the Quarter Head reportedly mobilised residents to identify women in the neighbourhood who were known to be pregnant.

According to the Quarter Head, Nine (9) women were subsequently identified and subjected to informal checks by elderly women in the community. During the exercise, one woman was reportedly found experiencing vaginal bleeding and was unable to provide a clear explanation regarding whether she had recently delivered a baby or where the newborn might be.

The woman reportedly told residents that she was experiencing her menstrual period. Given the circumstances and the proximity of the discovery, she became a person of interest and was subsequently handed over to police officers at the Kumba Central Police Station for further investigation.

It is important to stress that her involvement in the death of the newborn has not been established, and any determination of responsibility will depend on the outcome of the police investigation and medical findings.

Medical examination to establish whether delivery occurred

At the time of publication, the Communication Unit followed up on the case at the Kumba Central Police Station and was informed that the woman had been taken to the Kumba Regional Hospital Annex for medical examination.

The medical assessment is expected to help establish whether she had recently undergone childbirth (parturition) or was experiencing normal menstruation, as she claimed. Such an assessment may involve a clinical examination, obstetric assessment and ultrasonography (echography), alongside other investigations deemed necessary by the attending medical team.

The suspect was reportedly last seen at the hospital’s ultrasound/echography unit, where she was being attended to by a gynaecologist as medical personnel sought to establish relevant facts that could assist investigators.

Newborn given a decent burial

Meanwhile, Mr. Ngando Nofuru, Chief of Social Affairs for Kumba I, coordinated the burial of the deceased newborn. Council workers subsequently gave the infant a decent burial at the Public Cemetery located behind the Kumba Army Rescue Unit.

The discovery has left residents deeply concerned, while authorities continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death, identify the mother and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.

The investigation remains ongoing, and all persons involved are presumed innocent unless and until established otherwise by the competent authorities.
