When children have suffered traumatic upheaval in their lives - as have hundreds of thousands of children in South Sudan today - having a safe place to play and learn helps bring some normality into their lives. At this UNICEF "Child Friendly Space," set up in one of the camps for the displaced in Juba, young children sing songs and play games organized by an animator in the mornings. In the afternoons, older children have some basic education in the tent as space is still being cleared for dedicated schooling tents.

Le Rapport annuel de l’UNICEF 2012 célèbre une année de réussites pour les enfants, dans un climat difficile. L’UNICEF et ses partenaires sont intervenus dans 286 situations d’urgence dans 79 pays – fournissant des aliments thérapeutiques à 2,11 millions d’enfants de 6 à 59 mois souffrant de malnutrition sévère. Guinée-Bissau, 2012 : L'instabilité politique et la pauvreté profonde continuent à limiter le développement économique et social de la Guinée-Bissau. Le pays à le septième taux de mortalité le plus élevé au monde pour les enfants de moins de 5 ans, et la mortalité maternelle est également élevée. L'UNICEF travaille avec le gouvernement pour soutenir une variété de programmes, y compris en matière de santé, de nutrition, d’eau, d’assainissement et d’hygiène. Sur la photo, une famille se rend dans le village de Tebe-Zinho, où les enfants recevront des vaccinations et d’autres services de santé.
