Between the Cell and the Grave: A Season of Fear for Cameroon's Sexual Minorities

Douala, Cameroon's largest city and economic capital, has become the epicenter of a crisis unfolding on two fronts at once. In recent weeks, sweeping arrests by state security forces have swept up dozens of residents based on perceived sexual orientation, while a string of unresolved killings has left the city's minority community in mourning. Together, these events reveal a community caught between institutional hostility and the absence of protection. A Mass Arrest in the Night On the night of 23 August 2026, gendarmerie units carried out a large-scale operation across several Douala neighbourhoods, including Makepe and Bourramoussadi. More than sixty individuals identified or perceived as homosexual were apprehended and taken into custody. While many were released after paying informal "bail" sums, a smaller group remained detained for over a week at the Ndongbong gendarmerie unit, held in conditions marked by uncertainty, limited outside contact, and, according to civil society monitors, visible psychological distress.

Official Statement from our Desk Mr Nkwain Hamlet on the Attack on Mr. Max Joel at Mile 4, Limbe

On behalf of our organization and the entire team, I wish to formally address a deeply troubling incident that came to our attention. On Sunday at 3:00 AM, Mr. Max Joel was subjected to a violent and premeditated attack in Mile 4, Limbe, carried out by a group of individuals who deliberately plotted and executed this act of aggression and humiliation against him.

Our investigations have further revealed that this attack was an organized setup, facilitated from within by an individual who exploited trust to enable this crime. It was solely due to the courageous and timely intervention of the Mile 4 Police that Mr. Joel’s life was preserved and we extend our sincere gratitude to the officers involved.

As an organization, we stand firmly and unwaveringly beside Mr. Max Joel. His safety, dignity and right to justice are matters we take with the utmost seriousness.

I want to be clear, we will not rest until justice is fully served. Our team is currently conducting a thorough and structured gathering of all relevant evidence, testimonies and documentation necessary to pursue decisive judicial action against every individual implicated in this crime. Those who believe they can take the law into their own hands and walk free will be proven wrong.

We are in active coordination with the appropriate legal and security authorities and will ensure that this matter is handled with the full weight it deserves.

Our organization remains fully committed to providing Mr. Joel with every form of support be it legal, emotional and otherwise throughout this process. No person should ever be made to feel unprotected or alone in the face of such injustice.

Together, we stand for dignity, justice and accountability.
