*MPOX: UNDERSTAND THE DISEASE AND ADOPT THE RIGHT ACTIONS TO PROTECT YOURSELF*
The recent confirmation of an Mpox case in the city of Buea has sparked many reactions among the public. In response to legitimate public concerns, the Ministry of Public Health wishes to remind everyone that the national epidemiological surveillance system remains fully mobilized to ensure early detection, proper case management, and protection of communities.
Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is an infectious viral disease that affects men, women, and children alike. Although it can cause sometimes uncomfortable symptoms, most infected people recover completely when they receive appropriate care.
*HOW TO RECOGNIZE MPOX?*
The main signs of the disease are:
- Sudden fever
- Headaches
- Severe fatigue
- Muscle aches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- A rash that may appear on the face, hands, feet, or other parts of the body
*HOW IS MPOX TRANSMITTED?*
The virus is mainly transmitted through close contact with an infected person, including:
- Direct contact with lesions or skin rashes
- Body fluids
- Contaminated objects such sheets, clothing, or towels
- Prolonged physical contact with a sick person
*HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF?*
Prevention relies on simple but effective actions:
- Wash your hands regularly with clean running water and soap
- Avoid close contact with anyone who has a suspicious rash
- Do not share clothing, bedding, or personal items with a sick person
- Seek care quickly at a health facility if you develop symptoms
- Follow the advice given by health workers
*WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT IT?*
Anyone with a fever accompanied by an unusual rash is urged to go immediately to the nearest health center. Early detection allows for better patient care and limits the risk of spread within the community.
