Former Prime Minister Philemon Yang has officially handed over FCFA 53.6 million to support the rehabilitation of Bamenda Regional Hospital, following a fire that damaged its administrative infrastructure in late June. The funds, raised through a solidarity fund drive initiated by Minister Felix Mbayu, were presented to Hospital Management Board Chair Prof Fru Angwafo III in Yaoundé on July 17. The ceremony, attended by Hospital Director Dr. Denis Nsame and senior health officials, marked the culmination of a nationwide campaign that drew contributions from individuals, public officials, and well-wishers. Minister Mbayu confirmed that all pledges were redeemed, while Prof. Angwafo praised the gesture as a powerful display of unity and collective responsibility, assuring that the money would be used to restore services and strengthen healthcare delivery.
Established over 70 years ago, Bamenda Regional Hospital is a vital referral and teaching institution in the North West Region, employing more than 700 personnel and serving thousands of patients monthly. It hosts the region’s only haemodialysis centre and trains medical professionals across multiple disciplines. Despite the fire, Dr. Nsame confirmed that essential medical services have continued uninterrupted. This successful resource mobilization represents a crucial step in the hospital’s recovery, reflecting stakeholders' strong commitment to preserving a health facility that serves communities across the region and beyond.
