From Compassion to Cultivation: How Mercy House of Hope Is Empowering Widows Through Agriculture.
When Ndumbi Mercy founded Mercy House of Hope, her vision was simple but powerful: to restore dignity and hope to widows and the needy in Cameroon. Today, that vision is growing—quite literally—from the soil.
In Douala and its surrounding communities, Mercy House of Hope has taken a bold step beyond relief aid by investing in large hectares of farmland dedicated to intensive and sustainable agriculture. What we witnessed during our recent visit to the project sites was nothing short of inspiring.
Across the fields, palm plantations stretch into the horizon, alongside thriving food crops. Nearby, newly constructed structures stand ready for animal rearing, poultry farming, and aquaculture. These are not just farms—they are pathways to dignity, employment, and self-reliance for widows and vulnerable people who have long been excluded from economic opportunity.
On the ground, we met beneficiaries—widows and struggling parents—clearing fields, planting crops, and earning an income to feed their families. With tools in their hands and purpose in their hearts, many shared stories of how this opportunity has changed their lives.
“This work has given me hope again,” one widow told us. “I can now provide food for my children. We are grateful to Mama Mercy for believing in us.”
This agricultural initiative builds on Mercy House of Hope’s proven commitment to service. Over the years, the organization—through the generosity and leadership of Ndumbi Mercy—has provided relief kits and basic support to more than 500 widows in Douala, Cameroon, offered free training and scholarships, supported youth agriculture initiatives, operated a community health center, and cared for the elderly and underprivileged.
What makes this new approach remarkable is its focus on empowerment rather than dependency. By creating jobs, skills, and long-term income opportunities, Mercy House of Hope is transforming widows from aid recipients into economic actors and community builders.
However, the potential of this project goes far beyond what has already been achieved.
To scale up and accommodate many more widows and destitute persons, Mercy House of Hope is calling on people of goodwill, development partners, foundations, and donors to support this vision. There is an urgent need for:
Agricultural machines and tools
Poultry and aquaculture equipment
Seeds, feed, and inputs
Training support and technical expertise
With the right support, these farms can become a sustainable engine of hope—feeding families, creating jobs, and restoring dignity to thousands.
Mercy House of Hope invites the world to stand with them. Together, we can turn compassion into cultivation, and hardship into opportunity.
