Girls at Heart Cameroon (GaTCam) is a non profit organization based in Cameroon that promotes children and girls development through education. We believe that girls who receive an education are less likely to marry young and more likely to lead healthy, productive lives. At GaTCam we also believe that early childhood education can provide children with social and cognitive experiences that help t

hem become independent and develop a positive attitude to learning. These skills help children settle into primary school and drive their academic success. This is why we are committed to providing early childhood education to children and promote the overall development of children and the girl child. We intervene in the following areas;
Education
Health
Protection

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we need to focus on what it takes to ensure survivors can access justice.

Around the world, too many survivors are still being failed, by laws that don’t reflect the reality of sexual violence, by systems shaped by bias and stigma, and by barriers that make justice feel out of reach.

Real change means putting the right foundations in place: laws that protect survivors and reflect the reality of sexual violence, justice systems that are properly implemented and free from bias, and approaches that recognise the different barriers survivors face.

This means moving toward consent-based laws, ensuring they are properly implemented, and addressing the inequalities that leave many survivors behind.

Change is possible, but only if we act.

At a time when societies across the world are grappling with deeply troubling realities, it is becoming increasingly evident that many of the challenges we face could be mitigated if positive masculinity was intentionally nurtured.

Recently, we have witnessed, with collective pain and outrage, the f@t@l abuse of an 11-year-old girl by an adult man, allegedly with the involvement of his young son, a peer and supposed friend of the victim. Incidents like this shake our communities to the core and raise urgent questions about the values being passed on to the next generation.

One cannot help but reflect on how different such situations might be if boys were consistently raised with the principles of positive masculinity (values that promote respect, empathy, accountability, and the courage to speak up against wrongdoing)

While it may not always be possible to prevent individuals from making harmful choices, there is significant power in shaping the mindset of young boys. Teaching them to protect rather than harm, to partner rather than dominate, and to stand up rather than stay silent is a responsibility that society must take seriously.

As conversations around stronger protection systems and stricter measures for safeguarding girls continue, it is equally important to recognize that engaging boys is not optional, it is essential. The kind of men we see tomorrow will be a direct reflection of the values we choose to instill today.

Now is the time to act. Let us commit; within our homes, schools, communities, and institutions, to raising boys who respect, protect, and stand up for girls.

Let us speak up, teach intentionally, and model the values we want to see. Because protecting girls is not just a women’s issue, it is a shared responsibility.

Every girl deserves dignity and proper care.

After our sensitization session, we distributed menstrual hygiene kits (pads and bathing soap) to all participants at the IDP settlement.

This impactful initiative was made possible by the generosity of people of goodwill who despite the current economic hardship, they continue to uphold the dignity of underprivileged girls in every way possible. We’ll remain eternally grateful for kind gestures as this 🙌🙏 LODGE AN IDP Association #

Over the weekend, Girls at Heart engaged over 30 young girls (ages 12–20) in an IDP settlement in the Littoral Region in meaningful conversations on Menstrual Hygiene & Sanitation and Body Positivity.

The session was highly interactive, with the girls asking questions and openly sharing their experiences.

Thanks to the prior studies carried out by our partner, Lodge an IDP Association, we were able to better understand their needs and reach the girls who needed this intervention the most.

We’re grateful for this collaboration that made the outreach truly impactful 💜

Rentrée scolaire! But Not for Every Girl, Not Equally!

As the new academic year approaches, streets in many communities are filled with the buzz of back-to-school preparations. Uniforms are being sewn, bags packed, books purchased.

For many children in stable environments, this season brings excitement, routine, and hope. For boys, even in crisis-affected areas, this period often comes with the expectation that they will go back to school.

But for girls in conflict-affected areas or those who are internally displaced, the reality is far from simple.

School buildings may be damaged or unsafe for girls.

Families may lack the means to provide even the most basic school supplies and as such may be forced to make the sometimes painful decision of sending either their sons or daughters to school. In too many cases, the boy is chosen, while the girl is left behind to help at home or take on work.

Deepened inequality that has consumed our societies not only keep girls out of school but also perpetuate cycles of poverty, child marriage, and dependence. Boys continue to gain education and opportunities, while girls fall further behind.

The emotional toll of displacement often dims the joy of learning for some girls.

While every child faces some form of pressure during this season, girls in these fragile contexts bear it twice over: the weight of survival and the fight for an education. Yet, their dreams and potential are just as bright as any other child’s. They deserve the same right to learn, grow, and shape their futures.

At Girls at Heart, we join the call of the Africa Young Women Beijing +25 Manifesto:
Inclusive, equitable, and quality education: empowering girls through education that prepares them for leadership.

This school year, let’s not just celebrate the return to school but remember that education is not just about classrooms and textbooks: it’s about creating safe, inclusive spaces where every girl, no matter her circumstance, can learn, lead, and thrive. Let’s fight for the girls who are being left behind because when a girl learns, communities rise, and the future becomes stronger for everyone.

Education for girls in crisis is not charity, it’s JUSTICE.

Because when we invest in girls’ education in crisis, we’re investing in a stronger, more peaceful future for all.
