Association des Frères et Sœurs Unis pour l’espoir et la Solidarité (AFSUPES) is a dynamic, collective membership based in Douala, solely dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Members of this association are united by their shared adversity, and are truly representative of HIV/AIDS in Douala. As the prospect of overcoming HIV/AIDS in Cameroon became increasingly apparent in the 1990’s, people l
iving with this virus gathered together in 1996 in the city’s capital Yaounde under a single organization called the Association des Frère et Souers Unis (AFSU). Following its success and noticeable value, a branch office was created in Douala to provide further assistance across Cameroon. Meanwhile, the detrimental impacts of HIV/AIDS transpired throughout Douala, where people living with HIV/AIDS (PWLA) campaigned for behavioral change amongst the general population. In 2002, the association separated to create an autonomous organization where both people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS could gather and seek assistance for daily problems. AFSUPES has graciously opened their doors to all of those in need of assistance and information related to HIV/AIDS. It is through numerous personal testimonies and the formation of our collective community that AFSUPES has acquired a comprehensive understanding of the role that HIV/AIDS plays in Douala and, in turn, been able to effectively serve those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. First and foremost, AFSUPES operates from a patient centered model, including both people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Hearing the voice of the patient and standing in solidarity with the patients has driven our vision and formed our endeavors. We have created and successfully implemented numerous programs within local hospitals and communities after observing and experiencing deficiencies within the services of Douala. Undertaking a holistic approach to the patient, our programs cover the various aspects of their treatment including: psychosocial, medical, nutritional and financial. AFSUPES is a small, but powerful organization that understands Douala, the culture, and the patient.
