Consortium Engages Parents in Tole on Protecting Children from Digital Violence During 16 Days of Activism
As part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our consortium of partner organisations carried out a community door-to-door sensitization in Tole, with a special focus on parents and caregivers and their critical role in guiding children on safe and responsible use of digital spaces.
The sensitization centered on helping parents understand what digital violence is, how children can easily be exposed to it, and how it can affect their safety, mental health, and future. Parents were engaged in practical discussions on everyday digital risks such as cyberbullying, online harassment, exposure to harmful content, online predators, blackmail, and the non-consensual sharing of images.
In line with this year’s global theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” parents were encouraged to teach children digital discipline, online respect, and responsible phone use, while also learning how to monitor online activities without violating trust. Emphasis was placed on:
• Teaching children what is acceptable and unacceptable online behavior
• Encouraging children to speak up when they feel unsafe online
• Limiting excessive phone use and unsupervised internet access
• Leading by example through positive digital behavior at home
Community members were reminded that digital violence is real violence and that prevention starts at home, with parents serving as the first line of protection for children both offline and online.
Through this targeted outreach in Tole, the consortium continues to strengthen community awareness, child protection, and family-centered approaches to preventing both offline and digital forms of violence, reinforcing the message that ending GBV requires unity, responsibility, and action from everyone.
