Consortium Engages Parents in Tole on Protecting Children from Digital Violence During 16 Days of Activism

As part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our consortium of partner organisations carried out a community door-to-door sensitization in Tole, with a special focus on parents and caregivers and their critical role in guiding children on safe and responsible use of digital spaces.

The sensitization centered on helping parents understand what digital violence is, how children can easily be exposed to it, and how it can affect their safety, mental health, and future. Parents were engaged in practical discussions on everyday digital risks such as cyberbullying, online harassment, exposure to harmful content, online predators, blackmail, and the non-consensual sharing of images.

In line with this year’s global theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” parents were encouraged to teach children digital discipline, online respect, and responsible phone use, while also learning how to monitor online activities without violating trust. Emphasis was placed on:
• Teaching children what is acceptable and unacceptable online behavior
• Encouraging children to speak up when they feel unsafe online
• Limiting excessive phone use and unsupervised internet access
• Leading by example through positive digital behavior at home

Community members were reminded that digital violence is real violence and that prevention starts at home, with parents serving as the first line of protection for children both offline and online.

Through this targeted outreach in Tole, the consortium continues to strengthen community awareness, child protection, and family-centered approaches to preventing both offline and digital forms of violence, reinforcing the message that ending GBV requires unity, responsibility, and action from everyone.

Consortium Takes 16 Days of Activism Campaign to the Airwaves on CBC Radio Buea FM 101.9

As part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our consortium of partner organisations featured on a live radio program this morning on CBC Radio Buea FM 101.9 to engage the wider public on the realities of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the urgent need for collective action.

The radio discussion centered on this year’s global theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” and the powerful message it carries about the growing forms of abuse occurring through phones, social media, and other digital platforms. The conversation also examined the relevance of the theme within the Cameroonian context, where the increasing use of digital spaces has exposed women and girls to new risks such as online harassment, blackmail, impersonation, and non-consensual sharing of images.

The speakers further highlighted the importance of unity among key stakeholders, including parents, schools, community and religious leaders, law enforcement, youths, media, and civil society, in preventing and responding to both offline and online forms of violence. The session also addressed harmful myths surrounding GBV, the need for accountability for perpetrators, and the importance of providing support, protection, and encouragement to victims to speak out without fear or shame.

Through this engagement, listeners were reminded that ending Gender-Based Violence is a shared responsibility and that safety must extend to both physical and digital spaces.

We appreciate CBC Radio Buea FM 101.9 for providing this important platform for public sensitization, and we remain committed, as a consortium of partners, to advancing awareness, prevention, and community action throughout the 16 Days and beyond.

Community Outreach – Likoko Membea

03/12/2025, our consortium of partner organisations continued the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a door-to-door sensitization campaign in Likoko Membea.

We met families, listened to their concerns and shared practical information on digital violence, a growing form of abuse affecting both adults and young people in our communities.

From online harassment and scams to the misuse of personal photos, we explained how community members can protect themselves and their children, and how to report cases safely.

We appreciate the warm welcome from the community and the active participation of everyone who opened their doors to us.

Together, we can build a safer digital space and a violence free

Online spaces should be places of learning, connection and empowerment, not fear. Yet every day, women and girls across the world face harassment, cyber-bullying, non-consensual image sharing, digital stalking and other forms of online violence that silence their voices and limit their freedom.

We honour those we have lost, support those living with HIV and recommit to prevention, testing, treatment and compassion. As the world focuses on “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” we are reminded that ending stigma is just as important as expanding access to care. A healthier, safer future begins with awareness, acceptance and collective action. HIV is not a death sentence; stigma is.

The Mike Yanou Foundation on the 27th Nov 2025, in collaboration with our valued partners, carried out another impactful school outreach as part of the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This session focused on an important topic: “Substance Misuse and its Link to Violence Against Women and Girls.”

During the session, students explored how substance misuse can increase the risk of aggression, poor decision-making, and vulnerability to both physical and digital violence. We highlighted the ways drugs and alcohol can fuel harmful behaviors and contribute to Gender-Based Violence, emphasizing the importance of making safe, responsible choices for themselves and their peers.

Students were encouraged to:
• Recognize risky situations related to substance use
• Speak up and seek help from trusted adults, teachers, or authorities
• Support friends in making positive choices
• Understand the connection between substance misuse and digital/physical violence

This outreach, strengthened by the collaboration of our partners, reinforces our mission to empower young people, promote safe behaviors, and prevent violence in all its forms both online, offline, and in our communities

On the 26th Nov 2025, the Mike Yanou Foundation and partners officially launched activities for the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a powerful school outreach dedicated to this year’s global theme: “UNiTE! End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.”

During the session, we engaged students on the rising concern of digital-based violence, a form of GBV that occurs through phones, social media, and online platforms. Many young people face cyberbullying, online harassment, non-consensual sharing of images, impersonation, threats, and harmful content. We emphasized that what happens online has real consequences offline, affecting victims emotionally, socially, and psychologically.

Students learned:
• What digital violence looks like
• How online actions can harm others
• Why respect and consent matter, even on the internet
• Practical ways to stay safe online
• How to report harmful behaviour to trusted adults, school authorities, the police, or platforms
• How to support peers who experience digital abuse

We encouraged them to build a culture of digital responsibility, where every student thinks before posting, respects boundaries, and uses the internet in a way that protects not hurts, others.

As an organization committed to protecting young people, today’s outreach reaffirms our vision to prosperous communities by creating safer digital spaces for every child and ensuring that girls and young women are free from fear, abuse, and manipulation online.

Exciting News! The Mike Yanou Foundation Has Been Awarded a New Project

We are proud to announce that the Mike Yanou Foundation will be leading a transformative initiative in the Fako Division, Cameroon, focused on empowering adolescent girls with visual impairments through inclusive menstrual health education through the Gobal Youth Movement

This project will deliver Braille menstrual health booklets, reusable menstrual kits, and conduct interactive community workshops designed to break down stigma and promote dignity, confidence, and independence among visually impaired girls.

By providing accessible, disability-sensitive information and resources, this initiative will be a true gamechanger enabling visually impaired women and girls to manage their menstrual health with autonomy, improving their well-being, and fostering greater gender equality in marginalized communities.

We look forward to engaging with communities and creating lasting impact through awareness, education, and inclusion.

Together, we are building a future where no one is left behind

16 Days of Activism Against GBV Starts Today!

Today, Mike Yanou Foundation joins the global call to end all forms of violence as we kick off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence under the theme:
“UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

In a world where phones and the internet connect us daily, many women and girls face a hidden danger, online harassment, threats, blackmail, cyberbullying, and exploitation.
Digital spaces must be safe too.

This year, we are raising our voices louder than ever to say:

No woman should feel unsafe online or offline.

No girl should be silenced by fear.

Over the next 16 days, we will be engaging communities, parents, men, boys, and young people to champion safe online behavior and promote respect in every digital space.

Let’s UNiTE. Let’s act. Let’s make the digital world safe for all women and girls.
