As the world marks World Elephant Day today, Voice of Nature (VoNat) is translating the global call for elephant conservation into practical action on the ground. In the West Coast Cluster of the Mount Cameroon Landscape, Southwest Cameroon, VoNat has kick-started a pilot biofencing initiative designed to reduce elephant incursions and crop destruction while promoting safer and more sustainable coexistence between communities and elephants.

As part of the initiative, over 1,000 trees were donated, alongside hands-on, experiential training for farmers on establishing and managing biofences. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Mount Cameroon National Park Service, a decentralized service of the Cameroon Ministry of Forestery and Wildlife (MINFOF) with support from the New England Biolabs Foundation.

Voice of Nature (VoNat), in collaboration with the Mount Cameroon National Park Service and with support from the New England Biolabs Foundation, recently brought together 115 participants at Bakingili Community Hall to strengthen community capacity for safer coexistence with African Forest Elephants in the West Coast Cluster of Mount Cameroon National Park, South West Cameroon.

The workshop leveraged local and scientific knowledge to raise awareness of elephant behaviour and practical safety measures during encounters, while exploring nature-based solutions to humanโ€“elephant conflict. Community members identified priority farms for VoNatโ€™s pilot biofencing initiative to reduce elephant incursions and crop destruction.

Nearly 50 farmers expressed interest in ginger farming as a suitable livelihood option in elephant-incursion zones, highlighting the need for further support. The Chief of Bakingili, His Royal Majesty Chief Elive Joseph Mokunya, attended, while the Conservator of Mount Cameroon National Park was represented by Mr. Julien Tchamago.

Heavy rainfall on 5 August 2026 triggered devastating floods in Limbe and Kumba, claiming lives, displacing families, and causing widespread destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure. The tragedy once again highlights the growing vulnerability of flood-prone communities in Cameroon to extreme weather events and the urgent need for climate resilience.

Speaking recently on Royal TV's Green Hour, Voice of Nature (VoNat) Climate Action Programme Coordinator, Dimla Robert, explains the causes, implications, and practical local strategies needed to reduce recurrent flooding in vulnerable communities like Limbe and across Cameroon.

Community leaders and residents on the southwestern flank of Mount Cameroon have expressed their support for Voice of Nature (VoNat)'s Agroforestry Buffers and Community Awareness for Humanโ€“Elephant Co-existence Initiative.

During a recent community engagement visit, VoNat introduced the project and discussed practical ways of collaborating with communities to reduce humanโ€“elephant conflict through nature-based solutions. Funded by the New England Biolabs Foundation, the initiative will support farmers and schools to establish agroforestry buffer zones using elephant-deterring plant species while promoting awareness on elephant behaviour, community safety, and peaceful coexistence.

Together with local communities, VoNat keeps working to protect livelihoods, improve safety, and conserve threatened species and their habitats for future generations.

"Every wetland lost is a loss of biodiversity, especially amphibians, clean water, and livelihoods for our communities," said Ndimuh Bertrand Shancho, Executive Director of Voice of Nature (VoNat), while appearing as a special guest on The Green Hour, Royal TV's flagship environmental programme.

He called for the urgent restoration of Cameroon's forests, wetlands, mangroves, rivers, and watersheds, highlighting the Mount Cameroon landscape and Tiko Mangroves as conservation priorities. He also urged stronger enforcement of the 1996 Environmental Management Law, which provides special protection for wetlands. Shancho further highlighted VoNat's ongoing ecosystem restoration initiatives and shared the organization's future plans to scale up conservation efforts in Cameroon. When people think of Mount Cameroon, one of Cameroon's most important Key Biodiversity Areas, they often think of its iconic wildlife like African forest elephant, the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, the Mount Cameroon francolin, Prunus africana, zebrawood, and many other remarkable species.
Yet, very little is said about one of the mountain's most extraordinary groups of wildlife, its amphibians.

Tonight, we shine the spotlight on one of Mount Cameroon's endemic and threatened amphibians, recently recorded by the Voice of Nature (VoNat) research team and dedicated volunteers during our field surveys a few weeks a go, the Buea Egg Frog (Leptodactylodon bueanus).

Found nowhere else on Earth except the Mount Cameroon region, Leptodactylodon bueanus is an endemic species whose survival depends on the mountain's cool, fast-flowing forest streams and intact montane forests. Habitat loss, forest degradation, and climate change continue to threaten this remarkable amphibian, making every confirmed record valuable for conservation.

Although small and rarely seen, the Buea Egg Frog plays an important ecological role by helping regulate insect populations and serving as a sensitive indicator of forest health. Its presence reminds us that healthy ecosystems are sustained not only by charismatic megafauna but also by the lesser-known species that quietly keep nature in balance.

Every species matters. Every discovery strengthens the case for protecting Mount Cameroon's irreplaceable biodiversity.
