Between January 6-7 2026, 43 white-backed vultures and a donkey were discovered dead by residents near the Minim-Martap bauxite mine in Cameroon's Adamawa region. This lead to authorities launching an investigation and order the carcasses incinerated due to the endangered status of the birds and zoonotic concerns. More findings are being done about the mysterious deaths, potentially linked to mining activities, are being investigated by officials like Martap Divisional Officer Doukina Kedemou, with the government emphasizing wildlife protection efforts.
FReECo is working with other partners, while struggling to develop an initiative that will dive deep in this plague.

Mohammed Bin Zayed, through the MBZSCF ignited the initiative. Thanks to the Rufford Foundation, North American Pangolin Consortium and the Brevard Zoo Wildlife Emergency Fund, FReECo and its conservation team, including the Community Rangers and Ecoguards have successfully saved extensive habitats and pangolin populations in the Deng-Deng NP.
We successfully intercepted two teams of poachers and bushmeat dealers withing a period of 18 months. This was a great breakthrough for pangolins and other threatened species that the field team could protect through its biomonitoring and anthropogenic threat suppression efforts.
Our efforts are programmed as long-term, year-roun and unending biomonitoring and patrols. This is part of the idea about making conservation have a lasting impact.

Officially registered as an NGO in 2023, FReECo has been working with local and deprived communities for the conservation of wildlife with special focus on pangolins and other defenseless species while supporting the livelihoods of the people at its best.
However, Lionel Ebong the Founder of the FReECo who believes that charity begins at home felt that while the world is a global village, his community (Bakossi landscape) which is home for diverse species had to be the place to set the pace for the conservation of global biodiversity.
Thanks to Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP), a German Environmental philanthropic organisation, we were able to launch FReECo in Bangem through our project titled "Engaging Student-led Citizen Science and Locals for Monitoring Mount Lefo chameleon (Trioceros wiedersheimi, Nieden, 1910) Populations and Habitats in the Bakossi Forest Landscape".
It was an opportunity to empower students of PCSS and GBHS Bangem towards a career in Geography/Conservation, animate the community with football competition and support like-minded students who proved to be citizen scientists for the chameleon and environmental conservation.
Lets work together for the welfare of species.
and are for chameleon welfare.

Empowering the next generation of conservationists! Educating students about the importance of chameleon conservation is crucial for the survival of these incredible creatures. By teaching kids about the threats chameleons face, such as habitat loss and poaching, we can inspire them to take action and make a positive impact. Let's give students the knowledge and tools they need to protect our planet's amazing biodiversity!

Let's conserve chameleons! These incredible creatures play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and are an important part of their native habitats. By conserving chameleons, we're also protecting the forests, savannas, and deserts they call home. Plus, their unique adaptations and fascinating behaviors make them a treasure to preserve for future generations!" Most importantly they are good insect and pest regulators in our farm lands.

🌍🐾 Chameleon Conservation Matters! 🦎✨

Did you know that chameleons are not just vibrant and fascinating creatures, but also vital to our ecosystem? These incredible reptiles help maintain insect populations and serve as indicators of environmental health.

However, many chameleon species are threatened by habitat loss and illegal pet trade. 🏞️💔 It's crucial to raise awareness about their importance and the need for conservation efforts. Together, we can protect these amazing animals and their habitats!
and are working together to promote the student-Led citizen science for the conservation of chameleons in the Bakossi Forest landscape.

Let's educate ourselves and others on how we can make a difference. Every small action counts! 🌿💚
