Over the years, we have trained numerous farmers from Penja, Kumba, and Buea in multiplication of plantain seedlings(an essential step in addressing food insecurity and fostering sustainable farming practices). While the positive feedback from farmers has been encouraging, a common challenge has always been the fragility of the seedlings. Without proper care, more than 30% of these seedlings succumb to factors such as climate-related disasters, diseases, and the influence of animals or humans.

In response to this challenge, our dedicated research has led to the development of resilient plantain seedlings. These seedlings are designed to endure environmental pressures and diseases. To empower farmers with this innovation, we will be hosting free workshops to teach the techniques for developing and cultivating these durable seedlings.

on the 13th of November 2024, we held a detailed session on waste management on Ocean City Radio 88.5 FM Kumba

Waste management refers to the processes involved in managing waste from cradle to grave. This includes the collection, transportation, disposal/recycling and monitoring of waste materials produced as a result of human activity.

Cameroon as a whole struggles with waste management due to the increasing urban population couple with limited knowledge and resources.
The company in charge of waste management in Cameroon is HYSACAM (Hygiene and Sanitation Company of Cameroon).
Locals in Kumba rely heavily on HYSACAM, resulting in visible litter waste and pollution.

some ways to manage waste Include:

-Transforming organic waste into compost.
-Avoid single-use plastics, fast fashion, and disposable goods.
-Ase the 5 Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle)
-Develop clean technologies
Educative and awareness campaign etc.

Poorly managed waste can lead to a number of health issues, including:

Diarrheal diseases
Respiratory issues
Pests and diseases
Poisoning
soil contamination
water pollution
cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension.

Clean environment is good for our well-being

on December 11, 2024, we held a workshop titled "Navigating the Complex Landscape of Global and African Terrorism: Government Countermeasures and Strategies" at the university of Buea, with Dr Mbua as the main speaker .

Terrorism is the main problem facing Governments around the world.

According to US State department, there are over 60+ terrorist Organizations in the world with Africa having the highest number of terrorist groups.Terrorist groups in Africa range from Alshabaab,Boko haram, ISIS etc

Some of the causes of terrorism include:
poverty, persecution, lack of human rights, oppression, occupation, and ideologies (secular beliefs, religious and ethnic discrimination)
The primary aim of this workshop was to educate youth on terrorism, highlight countermeasures taken by Governments, equip participants with knowledge in order to curb the spread, and equally foster the spirit of resilience .
let's build a peaceful and loving community for all

On October 31, 2024, we conducted a plastic cleaning campaign in Bunduma.
Plastic does not biodegrade. It can take up to 1,000 years to break down, so when it is discarded, it builds up in the environment until it reaches a crisis point. This pollution chokes marine wildlife, damages soil, poisons groundwater, and can cause serious health impacts.

Our campaign aimed to raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and the need for sustainable practices to protect our environment.

on the 26 of September 2024 we engage in tree nursery to combat and mitigate climate change.
we established 200 nurseries with different types of plants .
climate change is threatening our existence, and the way to safeguard future generation is to plant more trees. Tress does not only play a crucial role in the carbon cycle, but they also help combat climate related disasters such as flood, landslide etc
Some importance benefits of trees include:
1) They produce oxygen
2)They help reduce air pollution
3)They prevent soil erosion
4)They help regulate the water cycle
5)They provide resources and habitat for wildlife
6)They support biodiversity
7)They help combat climate change
8)They provide shade and cool the environment

On the 29th of August, we carried out a risk and vulnerability analyses on the hill of Mbonjo in limbe .
The landslide that occurred between 2018 and 2020 in mbonjo was one of the most devastating.it took the lives of 5 people and equally destroyed properties.

To reduce risk, we build 3 traditional monitoring system .
We also sensitize some community members who definitely spread the message throughout the community, creating awareness and build Resilience.
Teaching them signs of landslide, mitigative and safety measures brought smiles and confidence to them

On the 22nd of September 2024, the interns of CAMEROON YOUTH FOR CLIMATE ACTION.. carried out a sensitization campaign on the dangers of Mount Cameroon and how to prepare before, during, and after an eruption to ensure safety .This campaign took place in the community of Bokwango . People in this community were happy, welcoming, and eager to learn more about their safety, as they live under the vulnerable flank of an active mountain known as Mount Fako or Mount Cameroon.

It should be noted that the last time mount Cameroon erupted was in 2012. Some scientists predicted the mountain would erupt in 2022, so we saw it as timely to engage the population since we are still within the range of the prediction.

"I have experienced not less than six eruption and nobody sensitize us on how to be safe during an eruption. We only see people showing care after the disaster strikes and cause destruction.we are happy" an old man said

We wish to educate all those living in the environs of Buea on safety measures during an eruption.

How to grow tissue culture banana for profit

Tissue culture banana refers to a method of propagating banana plants using tissue culture techniques. This involves growing banana plants from small tissue samples in a controlled, sterile environment. Below are the steps;

1. Buying seedlings
Tissue culture banana seedlings have been proven to be of high quality and free of diseases.

2. Land condition and preparation
Your land must have weather conditions that are suitable for bananas to grow well and thrive. Generally, from 800 meters above sea level and a minimum rainfall of 1000mm per annum that is evenly distributed, Given that tissue culture bananas are high-yielding, you better not try to rely on rainfall. Put a plan to have an irrigation system in place to avoid disappointments.

3. Planting
Tissue culture plantlets are planted in pits that are 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Well-drained soil is mixed with well-composed dry manure. Basal planting fertilizer is then added especially DAP and a dose of nematicide to keep nematodes away. The banana pit is then stuffed with this mixture, and then the plantlets are planted 30 cm deep within the pit.

Soil firming should be done after placing the plantlet so that the roots can come into close contact with the soil. Planting holes should be spaced 3 meters apart, which translates to approximately 450 plantlets per acre.

4. Irrigation
Irrigation should be done twice a week. Drip irrigation is preferred to avoid a lot of movements on the farm which could lead to the spreading of diseases and pests. Dry mulch should be placed around the base of the plantlet to prevent water loss through evaporation.

5. Pest and disease management
Tissue culture bananas are normally free from viral and bacterial infections. During planting, anti-nematode powder is applied to keep the nematodes away.

6. Suckers removal
A maximum of 4 suckers are recommended in one hole. Practice de-sucking frequently to prevent competition for space and nutrients.

7. Harvesting
It takes between 15 to 18 months after planting for bananas to be ready for harvest. A light shiny look is an indicator that the bananas are ready for harvest. The stem of a banana produces one

Step-by-Step Guide to Planting Garlic

Preparing Soil:
Garlic can be planted both in the ground and in raised garden beds. Garlic, like other vegetables, thrives best in fertile, loose soil. Work in plenty of compost before planting to help improve the soil.

Autumn is also a crucial time for those who plant in spring. This is the time to prepare your soil so that it’s at its maximum growing potential come March and April.

Compost is the ideal companion for growing garlic. Not only will it enrich the soil with nutrients, but it will also loosen the soil to promote healthy bulb growth. And just as with all root crops, loose soil can make a significant difference between having full-sized produce while harvesting, or ending up with stunted veggies.

Some gardeners will spread two or three inches of manure on their plot along with wood ashes, greensand, or another source of potassium. Bone meal or phosphate rock is also helpful in supplying phosphorus, a mineral crucial to good garlic stands.

Adding kelp meal or a good organic fish fertilizer helps ensure you have an abundance of the nutrients garlic needs. Spreading manure in the fall gives it time to mellow ahead of spring. Too much nitrogen will encourage top growth rather than bulb growth. Everything, as always should be in balance.

Preparing Garlic for Planting
Choose the biggest cloves to plant, as they will produce the biggest heads.

Before planting bulbs, soak them overnight to enhance sprouting and overall health. To do this, add a teaspoon of baking soda to a quart jar of water. After stirring, add the cloves and let them soak.

This soaking not only promotes garlic sprouting but also prevents ground rot. Many parts of the country can get heavy rainfall in the fall, so garlic can benefit greatly from a little extra defense against excessively soggy and wet soils.

There is no need to peel garlic cloves before planting them. Try to keep the skins intact, even if some of the papery outer layer does. Market research is important if you want to make profits in garlic farming
