Staying motivated
What truly motivates you – money, independence, excellence or purpose?
When I first followed God’s leading to take the sports and mission vision beyond my country, something unexpected happened: half of my financial supporters stopped giving. Their interest was local, not global. Things were tough at first but at least I realized that money doesn’t motivate me. Even without it I wanted to continue to pursue the plan.
I was part of a large international agency until I began to see the potential of movement thinking. I came to strongly believe that movements—not organizations—are what grow and multiply. Movements thrive on small, accountable teams and shared ownership, not top-down control.
I found myself motivated by the pursuit of excellence, the call to disciple-making, and a faith-filled passion for reaching every country and island. It was a vision far bigger than me or my resources. This is what excited me – the potential for partnership.
It took years of trial and error to work out what excellence in partnering looked like. But we kept moving forward.
What kept us going? Purpose. Not just mine, but our whole team’s. Each leader needed to believe in the “why” of what we were doing.
Our work wasn’t about doing things alone—it was about taking initiative, making space for creativity, and owning the work. Like the early church leaders in Acts, our team was looking for partners.
We didn’t always get it right, but we stayed motivated because the purpose was eternal.
Scripture to ponder – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison … the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Key Lesson: Purpose fuels perseverance. Use your team’s drive to spark creativity, pursue excellence, and serve with a vision far bigger than yourself.
