Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) in Dogs: An Overview

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal viral disease that primarily affects puppies, but can affect dogs of any age that are not fully vaccinated. It attacks the rapidly dividing cells in a dog's body, most severely impacting the intestinal tract, bone marrow, and heart. It's essential to seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect your dog

Why Veterinary Care is Essential:

Parvo is a serious condition requiring intensive veterinary treatment. The primary goals of treatment are to support the dog's body while it fights off the virus and to prevent secondary infections. This typically requires hospitalization and intensive care.

Eco Agric Association and Supportive Care:

While Eco Agric Association is likely not a veterinary clinic and cannot directly provide the medical treatment required for parvo, they could potentially play a supportive role by:

1. Education and Awareness:
• Distributing information about parvo prevention (vaccination) and recognizing symptoms to the community.
• Organizing workshops on basic animal care and hygiene.
2. Advocacy:
• Advocating for affordable veterinary care in the community.
• Helping pet owners connect with local veterinary resources.
3. Community Support:
• Organizing fundraising efforts to help pet owners afford veterinary care for parvo or other illnesses.
• Providing temporary foster care for animals recovering from illness (after they have been discharged from the veterinary clinic and are no longer contagious), depending on the organization's capacity and resources.
4. Partner with local vendors to provide lower cost Veterinary care.
5. Ensure that vaccinations are available to those families.

Important Considerations:

• Vaccination is Key: The best way to protect your dog from parvo is through vaccination. Puppies should receive a series of parvo vaccinations, followed by booster shots as recommended by a veterinarian.
• Early Detection is Crucial: If you suspect your dog has parvo, seek veterinary care immediately. The sooner treatment is started, the better the chance of survival.
• Parvo is Highly Contagious: Keep unvaccinated dogs away from other dogs and contaminated environments. Parvo can survive in the environment for months, even years. Disinfecting with a bleach solution is effective at killing the virus.
• If you are low on supplies, seek opportunities to get supplies.

Disclaimer: we are animal health and welfare organization and cannot provide veterinary medical advice. The information provided above is for general knowledge only and should not be substituted for professional veterinary care. If you suspect your dog has parvo, please seek immediate veterinary attention.

Back to School with Eco Agric Association: Investing in Brighter Futures

Eco Agric Association is proud to launch its "Back to School" initiative, dedicated to empowering internally displaced persons (IDP) children with the tools they need to succeed. Recognizing the immense challenges faced by IDP families, we are committed to ensuring that these vulnerable children have access to quality education.

This year, our "Back to School" program provides essential school supplies, including books, pens, and pencils, to IDP students in bomaka Buea SW region. We believe that providing these basic resources can make a significant difference in a child's ability to participate fully in their education.

Furthermore, Eco Agric Association is committed to alleviating the financial burden on IDP families by covering school fees for a select number of students. We understand that school fees can be a major obstacle to education, and we are determined to remove this barrier for these deserving children.

Education is the key to unlocking opportunity and breaking the cycle of poverty. By investing in the education of IDP children, we are empowering them to build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. We believe that every child deserves the chance to learn and grow, regardless of their circumstances.

This initiative is made possible through the generous support of our donors, volunteers, and partners. We are grateful for their commitment to our mission and their unwavering belief in the power of education.

Join us in making a difference in the lives of IDP children. Your support can help us provide essential resources and opportunities to those who need them most. Together, we can empower these children to build brighter futures and create a more just and equitable world. To support to children returning to school is to invest in the community.

Animal welfare in Africa and Cameroon faces complex challenges, reflecting a diverse range of cultural practices, economic realities, and levels of awareness. While traditional practices often involve close relationships between humans and animals, welfare standards often fall short of those in developed nations due to poverty, lack of resources, and limited enforcement of existing laws.

In many parts of Africa, including Cameroon, working animals (donkeys, horses, oxen) are crucial for agriculture and transportation, yet they often endure harsh conditions, inadequate veterinary care, and overwork. Companion animals, particularly dogs and cats, may face neglect, abandonment, and inhumane treatment. Wildlife poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict also pose significant threats to animal welfare, particularly for iconic species like elephants, lions, and gorillas.

Animal welfare organizations are working to address these challenges through education, community engagement, veterinary assistance, and advocacy for stronger animal protection laws. However, progress is often hampered by limited funding, cultural barriers, and competing priorities. Improving animal welfare in Africa and Cameroon requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses both immediate needs and underlying systemic issues, promoting a culture of compassion and respect for all living beings.

Plastic is a synthetic material made from polymers, long chains of repeating molecules, typically derived from petroleum. Its versatility, durability, and low cost have made it ubiquitous in modern life, used in packaging, construction, electronics, and countless other applications. However, plastic's persistence in the environment poses a significant challenge. Most plastics are not biodegradable and can persist for hundreds or even thousands of years, accumulating in landfills and polluting oceans. This pollution harms wildlife, disrupts ecosystems, and poses a threat to human health through microplastic contamination. Reducing plastic consumption, improving recycling rates, and developing biodegradable alternatives are crucial steps toward mitigating the environmental impact of this pervasive material. There are laws and policies guiding this, reasons why FEDEV in collaboration with ELAW and BACK 2 EDEN under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) organised a 2 days workshop from July 25th - Jyly 26th for Civil Society Organisations on " Plastic Pollution: Laws and Policies - The Global Plastic Treaty Process" which took place in Buea in the South West Region of Cameroon. Eco Agric Association was part of
CSOs took the opportunity to build a bond and to stand as one voice and also in support to the upcoming INC 5.2 negotiations schedule to take place in Geneva, Switzerland from the 5th - 14th August 2025. During the workshop, CSOs were also empowered on the place of laws and policies so as to take the stage and fight Plastic pollution in all ramifications. To beat Plastic pollution we all must be in.

Animal welfare situation in Cameroon

I'm writing this post with a heavy heart, as I'm deeply concerned about the welfare of dogs in Cameroon. Growing up, house hold always had dogs that accompanied them to the farm, providing companionship and security. However, the current situation is alarming, and Eco agric association compelled to speak out.

Even though climate change affects and kills dogs 🐶 seasonally that's threatening the survival of dogs in Cameroon, but then human selfishness and greed. The growing demand for dog meat (404) has led to a surge in dog hunting and trade, putting dog populations at risk.

As an activist I'm deeply troubled by the thought of a future without these loyal companions. Dogs play a vital role in agriculture, helping farmers protect their livestock and crops from predators. They also provide companionship and emotional support, which is essential for human well-being.

The extinction of dogs in Cameroon would have far-reaching consequences, not only for agriculture but also for the ecosystem as a whole. Dogs help maintain the balance of nature by controlling pest populations and protecting endangered species.

It's time for us to take action and demand better protection for dogs in Cameroon. We must raise awareness about the importance of animal conservation and the need to protect dog populations.

We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to protect these incredible animals.
