GFDLP Volunteerism Program: Building the Next Generation of Humanitarian Leaders
Under the Global Forum for the Defence of the Less Privileged (GFDLP) Volunteerism Program, a cohort of talented interns from the Department of International Relations at the University of Buea benefited from a comprehensive career orientation session on 31 August 2025 at the UNICEF Office in Buea, Southwest Region of Cameroon. This session was generously facilitated through the support of Mr. Mohammad Idrees Khan, UNICEF Head of Office, reflecting a strong commitment to fostering youth engagement in humanitarian and development initiatives.

During the Career Orientation, Mr. Chungom Emmanuel Fuhbingum, Communication Officer at UNICEF Buea focused on UNICEF’s core global pillars, including:

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) – emphasizing the protection and promotion of child rights worldwide;

The Core Commitments for Children (CCC) – guiding emergency and humanitarian response for children in crisis settings;

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – framing child-focused interventions within the global development agenda.

Through this experience, GFDLP interns gained first-hand exposure to international child-focused interventions and career pathways in humanitarian and development work, strengthening their capacity to become future leaders and advocates for vulnerable communities.

This initiative exemplifies GFDLP’s mission to empower youth and build local capacity to advance global development goals. Donor and partner support is crucial to expand such volunteerism and capacity-building opportunities, amplifying our impact on community development and youth empowerment across conflict-affected regions of Cameroon.

From Skills to Self-Reliance: Empowering Youth Through Hands-On Learning.

As interns from the Department of International Relations at the University of Buea—located in the conflict-affected South West Region of Cameroon—currently serving with the Global Forum for the Defence of the Less Privileged (GFDLP), we recently participated in a transformative workshop that broadened our horizons and deepened our commitment to community empowerment.

This hands-on workshop equipped us with practical skills in the production of mayonnaise, chocolate, spaghetti, coconut oil, and Ovaltine—empowering us with tools not only for personal development but for future entrepreneurship. We gained far more than technical knowledge; we developed confidence, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Through interactive sessions and real-time demonstrations, we discovered hidden talents and explored pathways to self-reliance. Most importantly, we left the workshop with a strong desire to share what we’ve learned—especially with vulnerable and displaced communities in need of economic opportunity.

We now call on partners, community leaders, and fellow youth: support initiatives that build skills and inspire self-sufficiency. Join us as we take bold steps toward creating a generation of empowered, self-reliant young leaders in Cameroon and beyond.

The future belongs to those who dare to learn, lead, and uplift others.

Cleaner Community Begins with Us: A Call to Action from GFDLP Interns from the University of Buea, Cameroon.

As interns from the Department of International Relations at the University of Buea—located in the conflict-affected South West Region of Cameroon—and currently serving with the Global Forum for the Defence of the Less Privileged (GFDLP), we recently led a clean-up campaign that made a tangible and lasting impact in our host community.

This initiative was more than just an effort to improve environmental hygiene. It was a bold demonstration of youth-led civic responsibility and a call for community resilience amidst adversity. Despite the challenges of living and learning in a region affected by conflict, we chose to act—to lead by example and promote a culture of health, unity, and shared responsibility.

Our efforts inspired residents to take greater ownership of their surroundings, leading to visibly cleaner neighborhoods, reduced health risks, and stronger community bonds. The campaign also served as a powerful reminder that real leadership begins at the grassroots level—and that even in the face of instability, young people can be agents of positive transformation.

We now call on you to join us. Support or participate in our upcoming clean-up drives. Stand with us in building healthier, more peaceful, and united communities across Cameroon.

When youth rise with purpose, communities flourish—even in the most challenging times.
