The North West Development Authority (MIDENO) has officially handed over a state of the art animal slaughter facility in the Bamenda III Subdivision. The newly constructed infrastructure was transferred to the Bamenda City Council during a ceremony held on Tuesday the 10th of February 2026 at the MIDENO Board Room.

This project is part of the Livestock and Fisheries Development Project (LIFIDEP), which aims to enhance the livelihoods of local communities through the development of the livestock and fisheries sectors.
Funded by the Government of Cameroon in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the initiative focuses on providing modern slaughter facilities for various livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry, ensuring the availability of fresh and hygienic meat products.

The modern slaughterhouse, situated at Manka’a, Mandah, spans 1,752 square meters and boasts a series of advanced features. These include a lairage for holding animals pre-slaughter, water tanks, a waste disposal system, sanitary installations, and a fully equipped slaughter hall. A dedicated line for sheep and goats enhances the facility’s capacity to handle different livestock.
In addition, the premises include a separate building for poultry processing, complete with designated areas for each stage of processing from slaughtering to packaging. The facility adheres to strict hygiene standards, equipped with overhead tanks supplying both hot and cold water.
During the handover ceremony, MIDENO’s General Manager, Cletus Anye Matoyah, highlighted the importance of utilizing this facility effectively as LIFIDEP moves into its second phase. “As we transition to Phase II of the project, it’s crucial that the structures established are put to good use, especially the slaughterhouse,” he stated. “Given its modern facilities, this slaughterhouse is a valuable asset for the Bamenda community and can even benefit neighboring towns.”Matoyah assured stakeholders that MIDENO would provide ongoing support to ensure the slaughterhouse operates efficiently. Bamenda City Mayor Achobong Tambeng Paul celebrated the development, characterizing it as a significant upgrade for the municipality. “This facility is an important addition to the City Council’s assets. We are committed to optimizing its use to enhance our meat distribution system,” he said.

The City Mayor emphasized advancements made in the slaughtering technology. “The new facility features modern equipment and procedures that significantly improve the quality of our processes compared to the old slaughterhouse, which lacked proper skinning facilities,” he noted. Mayor Achobong expressed ambitions to expand meat sales beyond local markets, indicating plans to explore opportunities for parceling and exporting meat to other towns. “This could generate revenue to maintain the facility while meeting the needs of our community,” he added.

One significant challenge remains: the hygienic transportation of beef from the slaughterhouse to the market. Currently, the Bamenda City Council lacks a specialized meat van dedicated to this crucial task. Cletus Anye Matoyah proposed to address this gap: “We will prioritize providing a meat van to ensure that the meat distributed is healthy, and we will also work on improving the road infrastructure around both the new and old slaughterhouses.”
As part of the initiative, Bamenda City Council staff will receive training on operating the new machinery, ensuring the facility operates smoothly and meets the community's needs.
This newly inaugurated slaughter facility marks a transformative step in the enhancement of livestock practices in Bamenda, promising not only better standards but also improved livelihoods.
