“Depuis que je suis née, je n’ai jamais utilisé un téléphone Android.”~ Beneficiary

A powerful reminder that digital exclusion is still a reality for many persons with disabilities.

Through the Wakka Inclusive Njangi Project, 25 participants in Mvila were trained on digital marketing, AI tools, and storytelling to help grow their businesses online. For many, it was their first encounter with AI and smartphones adapted with assistive technologies.

“Le choronko c’était bonne nuit… maintenant l’Android c’est bonjour.” said another beneficiary.

Today, all participants are active on Facebook and WhatsApp, using digital tools to support their livelihoods and build more independent futures.

Yesterday in Mvila Division, South Region, 25 participants, including persons with disabilities and their caregivers, began an intensive business and livelihood training under the Project.

From business plan development to discussions on access to bank accounts and social protection, the sessions revealed something powerful: the ambition and determination are already there. What many participants need are accessible opportunities and systems that support their growth.

Persons with disabilities are curious on owning bank accounts and how that can be managed given that some of them don’t have ID cards and birth certificates. This was a very interesting discussion of one component of the project which is to empower for formal and informal social protection.

Today, participants continue building their business ideas as we explore digital marketing, AI for business growth, and storytelling for businesses. One step at a time, independent and dignified livelihoods are becoming more possible. 💙

What are the for learning?

A recent study published in Frontiers in Education by Fotso Claude et al. of eBASE Africa reveals that in the Lake Chad Basin, hunger and unsafe journeys to school are major barriers to learning.

Across Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, conflict has closed 1,500+ schools and left 3.5 million children at risk of missing education.

What’s New at eBASE Africa?

From education innovation in Abuja to conversations on evidence systems in Yaounde and Kampala, April brought important milestones across our network.

Here’s what’s new:

📌 officially launched the N.E.R.D. Project pilot in Abuja with a four-day training for Grade 2 teachers, head teachers, and School Support Officers.

📌 We participated in the Brookings ROSIE peer-learning visit in Kampala, joining the partners working to scale education data innovation.

📌 convened policymakers, researchers, practitioners, diplomats, and community members in Yaounde, where the iCODE Abakwa team shared the vision of the DESTINY project and the DESTs tools developed so far.

📌 Ntam Damaris published blog, Blind Spots, is a reflection on knowledge systems, evidence, and her CODESRIA Residency Fellowship experience in South Africa.
