Strengthening Alliances for the Conservation of the Cross River Gorilla (Community-Led Conservation)
Bamenda, Cameroon – March 2026
CEPOW Cameroon, led by Executive Director Fontoh Desmond, actively contributed to a high-level strategic conservation workshop convened by the African Conservation Foundation (ACF) in partnership with the Environmental and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDeF).
The two-day meeting, held from February 25–26, 2026, at Hotel Lewat, brought together grassroots conservation organizations working across the Cross River Gorilla (CRG) landscape.
At the core of the deliberations was a shared commitment to:
Strengthen alliances for the protection of the Cross River Gorilla and its ecosystem.
Workshop Outcomes
Participants developed a structured 12-month community-led conservation roadmap, with priorities including:
Establishment of Community Conserved Areas (CCAs)
Development of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs)
Strengthening of local governance and stewardship
Promotion of inclusive, holistic conservation strategies
Enhanced collaboration across the CRG landscape.
Serving as facilitator, CEPOW’s Executive Director emphasized the importance of community ownership in ensuring the long-term survival of this critically endangered species. His leadership reinforced CEPOW’s role as a credible and committed partner in advancing conservation solutions.
The workshop also featured contributions from Great organizations and Experts including AJESH, CBBM, SEKAKOH, MEGWAH, and SURUDEV, alongside Arend, Director of the African Conservation Foundation.

This collective effort signals a coordinated and strengthened approach to safeguarding one of the world’s most endangered great apes.
