Women in the Wild: Guardians of the Cross River Gorillas

Across the Kagwene and Mbulu landscapes in Cameroon’s Cross River area, rural women are playing a powerful role in protecting forests, supporting their families, and safeguarding the critically endangered Cross River gorilla—even amid the ongoing crisis.

These women in the wild are adopting sustainable farming practices, protecting wildlife habitats, and strengthening community resilience.

At CEPOW Cameroon, we believe empowering women is key to both conservation and community survival.

Strengthening Alliances for the Conservation of the Cross River Gorilla (Community-Led Conservation)

Bamenda, Cameroon – March 2026

CEPOW Cameroon, led by Executive Director Fontoh Desmond, actively contributed to a high-level strategic conservation workshop convened by the African Conservation Foundation (ACF) in partnership with the Environmental and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDeF).

The two-day meeting, held from February 25–26, 2026, at Hotel Lewat, brought together grassroots conservation organizations working across the Cross River Gorilla (CRG) landscape.

At the core of the deliberations was a shared commitment to:

Strengthen alliances for the protection of the Cross River Gorilla and its ecosystem.

Workshop Outcomes

Participants developed a structured 12-month community-led conservation roadmap, with priorities including:

Establishment of Community Conserved Areas (CCAs)
Development of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs)

Strengthening of local governance and stewardship
Promotion of inclusive, holistic conservation strategies

Enhanced collaboration across the CRG landscape.

Serving as facilitator, CEPOW’s Executive Director emphasized the importance of community ownership in ensuring the long-term survival of this critically endangered species. His leadership reinforced CEPOW’s role as a credible and committed partner in advancing conservation solutions.

The workshop also featured contributions from Great organizations and Experts including AJESH, CBBM, SEKAKOH, MEGWAH, and SURUDEV, alongside Arend, Director of the African Conservation Foundation.
A Renewed Commitment

🌍🎥 Our Voices Are Crossing Borders! 🌿
We are proud to announce that our children’s forest conservation video has finally been broadcast on German TV as part of the “Forest Without Borders” project.
Our heartfelt thanks to SDW Hamburg for trusting our work, believing in the power of youth voices, and including us in this inspiring initiative. We also sincerely thank German TV for giving visibility to community stories from Cameroon and amplifying the voices of young environmental defenders.
This moment reminds us that forests connect us all — beyond borders, languages, and cultures. 💚🌳
