🌍 WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY – 19 AUGUST

Today, as we commemorate World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the courage, compassion, and dedication of people who work tirelessly to support communities affected by conflict, disasters, climate change, displacement, poverty, and other humanitarian challenges.

Humanitarian action is not only about providing immediate assistance. It is also about protecting dignity, restoring hope, strengthening resilience, and helping communities build a better future.

As environmentalists, we understand that humanitarian and environmental challenges are deeply connected. Climate change, deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss can increase the vulnerability of already affected communities.

This is why environmental conservation must be part of humanitarian action.

🌱 RETAFO Advances Practical Plant Propagation Through Marcotting
Today, RETAFO – Reforestation Task Force carried out a practical marcotting (air-layering) activity as part of our continued commitment to sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, nursery management, and the multiplication of quality planting materials.
Marcotting is an important vegetative propagation technique that allows us to produce new plants from healthy branches while they are still attached to the mother plant. When properly done, the treated branch develops roots and can later be separated and established as an independent plant.
The operation requires careful selection of healthy branches, proper preparation and wounding of the stem, application of a suitable moist rooting medium, secure wrapping, and regular monitoring until sufficient roots develop.
🌿 Why is this important?
Successful marcotting can: • Accelerate the multiplication of desirable fruit and agroforestry species.
• Help preserve the characteristics of healthy and productive mother plants.
• Produce planting materials that can establish relatively quickly.
• Support household agriculture and agroforestry enterprises.
• Strengthen practical knowledge among farmers, students, interns, and young environmental professionals.

Strengthening Sustainable Agriculture Through Grafting 🌱
Today, the Reforestation Task Force (RETAFO) successfully conducted a hands-on grafting exercise on orange, lime, lemon, and grape seedlings, equipping participants with practical skills in one of the most effective horticultural propagation techniques.
Grafting combines a vigorous rootstock with a superior scion to produce healthier, stronger, and more productive plants. This technique offers numerous benefits, including:
✅ Earlier fruit production
✅ Improved resistance to pests and diseases
✅ Better adaptation to different soil and climatic conditions
✅ Higher-quality fruits with consistent characteristics
✅ Increased productivity and better economic returns for farmers

🌱 Restoring Ecosystems, Conserving Biodiversity, and Strengthening Community Livelihoods
The RETAFO – Reforestation Task Force continues to make significant strides in environmental restoration through ongoing tree planting activities across several communities in Bui Division, Cameroon.
Our initiative promotes the planting and domestication of diverse tree species that contribute to environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods, including:
🌳 Economic trees that provide fruits, timber, and other income-generating products for households.
🌿 Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) domestication, encouraging communities to cultivate valuable indigenous species such as medicinal plants, edible fruits, spices, and other forest resources. This reduces pressure on natural forests while improving food security, healthcare, biodiversity conservation, and household incomes.
💧 Watershed protection trees that safeguard water catchments, reduce soil erosion, and enhance water availability for communities and future generations.
🐝 Bee-friendly trees that support pollinators, strengthen biodiversity, promote sustainable beekeeping, and increase agricultural productivity through improved pollination.
At RETAFO, we believe that restoring degraded landscapes goes beyond planting trees. It means conserving biodiversity, building climate resilience, promoting sustainable land management, empowering communities through green livelihoods, and ensuring that future generations inherit healthy ecosystems.

Today, on World Environment Day, RETAFO proudly partnered with the Bambui Council to launch a municipality-wide tree-planting campaign aimed at creating a greener and more sustainable environment. Through this initiative, we plan to plant 2,000 trees across Bambui, including the university community and other strategic locations.
This campaign is designed to beautify the municipality, promote environmental conservation, combat climate change, and enhance carbon sequestration. Trees are essential for improving air quality, protecting biodiversity, conserving water resources, and building climate resilience.
As we celebrate this important day, we encourage all community members, students, and stakeholders to support tree planting and environmental stewardship. Together, we can create a healthier, greener, and more resilient Bambui for present and future generations.
