Raffia palms are more than just trees; they are life-support systems for our communities and ecosystems.
At RETAFO, we are proudly nursing and promoting raffia as part of our commitment to environmental conservation, watershed protection, and sustainable livelihoods in Bamenda and beyond.
Raffia plays a major role in: • Protecting water catchments and wetlands
• Preventing soil erosion
• Supporting biodiversity
• Providing materials for roofing, weaving, furniture, and crafts
• Generating income through palm wine and local products
Unfortunately, excessive cutting of raffia is threatening many water sources and degrading our environment. When raffia disappears, streams dry up, erosion increases, and livelihoods are affected.
We therefore encourage farmers and community members to stop the indiscriminate cutting of raffia palms and instead embrace raffia restoration and sustainable management. For every raffia cut, more should be planted.
Conserving raffia today means protecting water, livelihoods, and future generations tomorrow. 🌱💧

Today, RETAFO had the privilege of engaging with a school Environmental Club through a meaningful tree donation and environmental education program, in collaboration with our partner Greenpath.
The session combined both theory and hands-on practice—equipping club members with knowledge on the importance of trees in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable living, followed by a practical demonstration of proper tree planting techniques.
Working with the Environmental Club was especially impactful, as these young eco-leaders are at the forefront of driving change within their school and community. By empowering them with the right knowledge and skills, we are strengthening a generation committed to environmental stewardship.
At RETAFO, we believe that real change starts from the grassroots. Today, we didn’t just plant trees—we nurtured future environmental champions.

Today, I had the opportunity to establish a seedbed where young plants are carefully nursed to grow into strong and healthy seedlings. This important step in agriculture and environmental restoration ensures better germination, proper care, and higher survival rates when the plants are later transplanted.
Through this process, we are not only preparing plants for the future but also contributing to sustainable agriculture, reforestation, and climate resilience. Seedbeds play a key role in producing quality seedlings that will restore degraded lands and support food security in our communities.
At RETAFO, we remain committed to empowering youth with practical skills in agroforestry and environmental stewardship. Every seed planted today is a step toward a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.

Plantain multiplication techniques are transforming smallholder agriculture, and organizations like RETAFO are playing a key role in scaling this innovation.
Through the Plants Issued from Stem Fragments (PIF) method, RETAFO supports farmers in producing large quantities of clean, healthy planting material—up to 50 plantlets from a single sucker. This approach reduces the spread of pests and diseases, improves crop uniformity, and boosts overall farm productivity.
The advantages are clear: high-volume production, cost-effective access to quality planting materials, faster maturity, and consistent, higher yields. By promoting nursery-based propagation, proper spacing, and controlled suckering, RETAFO is enabling more sustainable and profitable farming systems.
Beyond productivity, this innovation plays a critical role in fighting food insecurity by ensuring reliable plantain supply and strengthening resilience across farming communities.
A strong example of how practical, science-driven solutions can empower farmers and transform the agricultural value chain.
