MBOSCUDA-Cameroon NW Regional Chapter About MBOSCUDA:
MBOSCUDA was conceptualised in 1987 and officially legalised in 1992 to strengthen Mbororo socio-economic and institutional capacities.

This page is dedicated to sharing the interventions and achievements of MBOSCUDA in it efforts to empower and promote rural Mbororo people to achieve sustainable and equitable development on their own terms. Three groups: Fulani Social Development Association (FUSODA), Fulani Foundation of Cameroon (FUFOUCAM) and Mbororo Development Association (MDA), formed in Bamenda, Kumbo and Yaounde

respectively, merged in 1992 into the Mbororo Social and Cultural Development Association of Cameroon (MBOSCUDA) – a non-partisan, non-profit socio-cultural development association. The association has grassroots structures in eight of Cameroon’s ten provinces with a membership of 40,000 (MBOSCUDA, 2002). Objectives of MBOSCUDA
MBOSCUDA has the following specific objectives:
- Reinforce unity ties between its members, as well as with other peoples, through discussion, cooperation, social integration and tolerance
- Promote the economic, social and cultural development of the Mbororo especially the women with a view to ameliorating their standards of living
- Promote the education of the Mbororo especially the youths
- Improve upon agro-pastoral practices to ensure maximum protection of their environment as well as contribute and participate in all possible undertakings aimed at a better management of grazing lands and the environment
- Promote any form of cooperation with any person, individual or corporate, which can help in the realization of the Association’s aims and objectives. Domain of intervention
Just like Mbororo identity and value system cannot be separated from cattle, the issues of rights and development are also inseparable to the Mbororo-Fulani (Nuhu, 2003). MBOSCUDA is therefore both a social movement as well an Non Governmental Organisation (NGO). As a social movement it seeks to bring all the Mbororo-Fulani under one umbrella in order to make a voice in challenging some of the biggest problems they face like access and control over land. As an NGO and through the support of National and international aid agencies, MBOSCUDA intervenes in the following areas. Paralegal Extension:
A community-based Para-legal Extension Programme aimed at challenging negative practices (such as exploitation and human rights violations), providing legal services to victims and informing ordinary citizens of their rights and the means through which they can secure this for themselves was setup. The programme also extends its support beyond the Mbororo communities especially to people in the rural Communities. This program also focuses on Sensitisation on civil and civic education especially the right of the child, facilitating the issuing of birth certificate and identity card. Finally, the program also ensures public relation with government agencies, national and international organisation through Lobbying and advocacy for Mbororo courses. Women Empowerment: Trainings are conducted on:
• Group dynamics and leadership
• Business management
• Provision of business credit to groups and qualify individuals

"PROJECT UPDATE"

Promoting Non-Violent Community Based Solutions to the escalation of Conflicts between Mbororo Pastoralists and Crop Farming Communities in the North West Region of Cameroon

MBOSCUDA NWR has progressively continued to implement the project activities in three communities of Ndu Munipality( Mbandfung, Mbongong, & Ngarbu 1) of Donga Mantung Division in yj3 North West Region of Cameroon

The project is being implemented with financial support from the Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). The project title is “Promoting non-violent community-based solutions to the escalation of conflicts between Mbororo Pastoralists and Crop Farming communities in the North West Region of Cameroon”.

The last project field activity was a refresher training that held on Wednesday, January 31, 2023 for the 30 Peace Actors of Mbandfung, Mbongong and Ngarbu communities of Ndu Sub Division affected by inter-community conflicts aggravated by the socio-political crisis. Amongst the 30 Peace Actors were 15 Mbororo pastoralists (3 females and 12 males) and 15 Grass-field crop farmers (5 females and 10 males).

The holding of the workshop received positive feedback. It ranges for the following the peace initiatives which noz has; Muslims (Mbororos and Wimbum) now praying together in the local mosques, their children now school in the same academic institutions unlike before the peace initiative. They however plead that the local authorities (Ndu Council) should rehabilitate their local cattle market which has been in shambles since the onset of their differences.

It was their fervent wish that, the peace that is already coming back into their communities should continue and be everlasting. This can be achieved through constant information flow between the two communities. As the initiative comes to an end this February 2024, the Peace Actors were encouraged to keep the peace flame burning as long as their communities continue to exist side by side.

There are many more achievements of the project and this information will be captured in the final project report and project capitalization document that will be produced by the end of February, 2024.

PROJECT UPDATE!!

"Promoting Non-Violent Community-Based Solutions tobth3 Escalation of Conflicts between Mbororo Pastoralists and Crop Farming Communities in the NWR of Cameroon"

MBOSCUDA NW progressively continues to implement the project activities with funding from the Canadian Embassy in Yaoundé in the Ndu Municipality in 3 communities (Mbandfung, Mbongong, & Ngarbu 1). The project is being implemented with financial support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). The project title is “Promoting non-violent community-based solutions to the escalation of conflicts between Mbororo Pastoralists and Crop Farming communities in the North West Region of Cameroon”. The project activities implementation started in August 2023 and will be completed by enf of February, 2024.

In order to resolve recurrent conflict between the Wimbum and Mbororos in Ndu sub division that has recently escalated to violence leading to loss of human lives and destruction of properties, a peace initiative has been carried out. The peace initiative involved intra-community and intercommunity dialogue within and between the conflicting communities. The project began with training of peace crusaders from the concerned communities that is Mbongong, Mbandfung and Ngarbu on November 16th and 17th, 2023. The peace crusaders chosen from the conflicting communities were then charged with organization of intra-community and intercommunity dialogues, which will have as main aim to find a lasting solution to the disparity between the two communities who have always lived in harmony for decades. After holding the dialogue at the various levels, the following causes and resolutions were brought forth;
The ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West Regions and farmer-grazer conflict were identified as the major fueling factors causing friction between the two communities.

It was resolved amongst many others that, a traditional council comprising members of the Wimbum and Mbororo community should be created in the concerned communities, a mixed vigilante committee should also be created, all disputes should be presented first to the leader of each community before bringing it to the Village Traditional Council. The Mbororo cattle herders have been encouraged to build night paddocks to avoid straying of animals during the night into farms.

The 3 communities were also supported to develop an Early Warning and Conflict Prevention Mechanisms. The communities are being supported to implement their early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms. The trained Community Peace Facilitators are working closely with other community leaders to implement these mechanisms with backstopping from MBOSCUDA NWR project staff.

It is believed if these and many others are implemented and respected by the Mbongong, Mbandfung and Ngarbu communities of Ndu Sub Division-Donga Mantung, there will once more be long lasting peace as it used to be in the past.

The project is funded by the Canadian Embassy and executed by the Mbororo Social, Cultural and Develop Association (MBOSCUDA).
