One rainy morning in Muteff, a schoolgirl quietly left class after staining her uniform during her period. Too embarrassed to explain, she walked home, her education interrupted by a natural biological process.

For millions of girls across sub-Saharan Africa, menstruation remains a barrier to education due to poor hygiene management, inadequate facilities, and persistent stigma. In Cameroon’s conflict-affected Northwest and Southwest Regions, the challenge is even greater.

Waah Clotilda Andiensa, Founder and Coordinator of the Center for Advocacy in Gender Equality and Action for Development (CAGEAD), has made menstrual hygiene advocacy a mission for dignity and inclusion. Viewing menstruation as a human rights issue, she has led efforts that have sensitized over 15,200 students and teachers, trained 165 teachers as menstrual hygiene coordinators, empowered 75 peer educators, and established 20 menstrual hygiene clubs.

CAGEAD has distributed 12,000 menstrual kits and supported schools with emergency supplies, menstrual-safe spaces, and sanitation facilities. The organization also promotes sustainable solutions through reusable pad production and advocates for girls with disabilities.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, Clotilda calls on families, schools, government, and councils to prioritize menstrual health. Her message is simple: no girl should lose her education, dignity, or safety because she menstruates.
