*What Young People See Sitting Down*

There are some things young people see sitting down
that elders in big offices will not see standing,
and will not still see even if they climb
to the top of the tallest tree.

Young people see that war is bad,

but these elders see blood flowing
and call it a normal river.
They see bodies in the streets
and call them wood.
They see suffering in the land
and call it music.

Looking at corruption,
young people see excrement,
but these elders
see a beautiful decoration in the system.

Looking at nepotism,
young people see wolves,
but the elders see doves.

It is not every time we should believe our elders,
and not every time they see well.

To not have clouded eyes like the elders
is for young people to start seeing themselves
in one another now.

What the Anglophone Conflict Carries

The Anglophone conflict has exposed our fragile unity. It has revealed the weakness of our leadership. It has reminded us that the marginalised can also harm one another. It has shown that when the marginalised do not stand together, their pain develops deep roots. It has shown us that a nation can know the solution to its problems and still choose to beat about the bush. It has laid bare how deeply self-centredness and greed run within us.

Today is another opportunity to turn away from the path of doom.

For the two affected regions, let us remember: the pain of one person or community is the pain of all.

When a government has failed, it does not necessarily mean that everyone who speaks about positive change is different. It is better to remain watchful, unless you are the one on the mission to inspire this positive change. Always remember that change has to begin with you.

If we can create a vice president post in Cameroon, then we can also create a solution to the Anglophone conflict today.

*Nature's Fairness*

The way it rained yesterday, you would think the season of dust had never existed. Roofs were pounded for hours.

Nature balances itself; deliberate in taking away the dust after overfeeding people with it, deliberate in bringing back streams and rivers it had made disappear, deliberate in rubbing plants with freshness after giving them miserable appearances, deliberate in chasing away the heat it had suffocated people with, deliberate in sucking away its own harshness.

I look at the way of nature and yearn for a serious discussion with fellow humans. We can be deliberate in ending the bloodshed after making it look normal, deliberate in engaging in genuine dialogue after a long time of sowing hate, deliberate in making the right leadership possible after years of starving people of it, deliberate in living equality after years of adoring inequality, deliberate in unearthing meritocracy after years of its burial, deliberate in righting wrongs.

We are nature too, as at some point we become soil and nourish plants. It is possible to act like nature.

Talk to Me Bamenda

I thought you had already shown us enough,
but your latest painting says otherwise;
I see sobbing, I see weeping, I see people crushed
by the weight of despair,
not from the usual source that has existed for almost a decade.

We have seen all sorts of blood
from innocent people.
You have become ghost town capital,
where even birds are scared to chirp,
for they may be termed blackleg.
Abduction still thrives like flowers near a river.
Look at how thick the air is with terror and uncertainty.
Most of those able to sit in classrooms
do so like rodents searching for groundnuts
in the wrong place.

Now, you are also a place
where people may have to gather with gloomy faces
when it rains,
as rainwater has also mastered how
to kidnap people and give them back without their breath.

You have shown us what happens
when a people refuse to talk to one another
with open minds when misunderstanding grips the land by the throat,
or when others choose to think
that when a system favours only a few,
it becomes normal to inflict pain on fellow victims.

Are you also trying to show us
what happens when we refuse to dignify our roads and bridges?

Talk to me Bamenda.

The Bite of Awakening

A piercing sensation ran through my whole body, and I sprang from my chair. On the spot where the biting happened, I pressed my right hand. My neighbour, who was bathing the children, noticed it and asked what the matter was. Darkness was already crawling in.

'No, no, no, I am fine. Yes, I am fine,' I said. 'It's just... just...'

The next child, who was to enter the bowl of warm water, was reluctant, drawing my neighbour's attention away. She grabbed his left hand and bundled him into the water. Whimpering could be heard.

When I looked around, I saw the attacker.

As I lifted my leg to crush the black ant, it said to me, 'What are you trying to do?'

'To kill you, of course. I don't remember doing anything wrong to you, yet you had the guts to bite me.'

'Keep calm and be reasonable. I didn't do anything wrong.'

'What do you take me for?'

'I take you for a great man who isn't aware of it. And that makes me angry. I had to pinch you to wake you up.'

Quietly, I sat. 'I don't understand what you mean.'

'Look at my size.' I did. 'I am tiny, yet I am able to affect you. No idea is too small. Yours matter even if they appear insignificant. You can make a difference irrespective of where you are in life. Are you getting me?'

I nodded.

'Good. Before I go, remember this always: the nation is not only looking for people with big certificates to impregnate her with progress; she also cherishes those who are without these certificates but who want to do something for her. Don't be scared of the first step.'

I got up and paced up and down.

'One more thing,' the ant said calmly, 'if I come next time and notice that you are still in your shell, I will not be the only one to bite you.'

Gently, I rubbed the spot again.

*Waiting for Others to Die*

We wait for others to die
from what is treatable.
We ignore the desperate calls
of many stomachs

while lavishness and all sorts of weapons
receive great attention from public funds,
while our fertile fields stay lonely,
yearning for concern.

War thrives in hearts, while conversations
that can heal the land
wander, looking for where to perch.

If we can cling tight to a stone,
we can also do the same with a dove.
