As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Women Empowerment Association for Development in Africa (WEADA) calls for stronger advocacy and action to end digital violence against the woman. Digital violence against women which includes cyberbullying, online harassment, defamation, blackmail, identity theft, and the non-consensual sharing of private images has emerged as one of the fastest-growing forms of gender-based violence. Though it takes place behind screens, its effects are painfully real: emotional trauma, social isolation, reputational harm, and, in some cases, physical threats.
WEADA emphasizes that the fight against gender-based violence must now include the digital space, where millions of women and girls engage daily. through Education, Advocacy, and Partnership, WEADA, seeks to:
• Promote digital literacy and online safety for women and girls;
• Support survivors with psychosocial assistance and legal guidance;
• Advocate for the enforcement of existing cyber laws;
• Encourage responsible online conduct through community engagement.
In the voice of the regional coordinator of WEADA “Technology should empower, not endanger, “Every woman deserves to express herself freely and safely, both offline and online. When women are safe in digital spaces, peace and dignity thrive in society.”
