Tompkins Conservation

Tompkins Conservation We believe the world can be more wild, beautiful and equitable! For more information: www.rewildingargentina. org.

We have a rewilding approach to conservation—measured in land and sea protected, wildlife populations recovered, and neighboring communities prospering as a result of conservation. For nearly three decades we’ve been working to create parklands, protect and restore wildlife, promote regenerative agriculture, and prove that national parks are economic drivers for local communities in Chile and Arge

ntina. Our results speak for themselves: over 14 million acres protected, rebounding wildlife populations, and expanding economic opportunity in park gateway communities, accomplished with our strategic partners, Tompkins Conservation Chile and Rewilding Argentina. Our current initiatives in Argentina with Rewilding Argentina include rewilding jaguars, giant river otters, red-and-green macaws, patagonia vizcacha, and many other species, creating coastal and marine protected areas in Argentine Patagonia and other large-scale land conservation in Corrientes, Chaco, Chubut and Santa Cruz. In Chile, we are working with Tompkins Conservation Chile on rewilding projects involving the endangered huemul deer, Darwin's rhea, condors and other species, on developing wildlife corridors across Chilean Patagonia and other conservation projects. In this “Best of” episode, Alex revisits the podcast’s most powerful moments, including his interview with Tompkins Conservation President Kristine McDivitt Tompkins who is restoring vast South America ecosystems alongside TC offspring orgs Fundación Rewilding Argentina and Fundación Rewilding Chile.

These stories bridge the gap between scientific innovation and the human spirit, proving that protecting our planet is entirely possible when passion meets action.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY: PATAGONIA AZUL PROVINCIAL PARK🌊

One year ago, Chubut province established its first marine provincial park, becoming the first jurisdiction in Argentina to protect such a large portion of its coastal waters under such a high conservation category.

Approximately 300,000 hectares (about 750,000 acres) of sea, coastline, and islands form part of a protected area that safeguards key habitats for iconic species and underwater forests.

This anniversary celebrates the establishment of an unprecedented protected area in the region and reaffirms the need to continue working toward more Marine Protected Areas for the future of the Argentine Sea.

Happy Mother’s Day to every type of Mom! 🌎🌸

From the fiercest protectors to the gentlest guides, motherhood in the wild takes many forms. From the mothers carrying the next generation on their backs (literally), to the matriarchs who pass down vital information for generations to come, to Mother Nature herself, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and care of mothers everywhere.

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH! 🎉🌎

Today we join the chorus of millions around the world celebrating the legacy of Sir David Attenborough. British biologist, renowned conservationist, and legendary broadcaster, Sir David has dedicated most of a century to bringing folks closer to nature. His iconic voice has inspired untold numbers of conservationists around the globe through his multiple nature documentaries and broadcast specials.

In his documentary series Life On Earth, Sir David says, “The fact is that no species has ever had such wholesale control over everything on Earth, living or dead, as we now have. That lays upon us, whether we like it or not, an awesome responsibility. In our hands now lies not only our own future, but that of all other living creatures with whom we share the Earth.”

Thank you Sir David for your unwavering dedication to protecting the planet and for guiding generations of people towards better understanding nature.

END OF HUMPBACK WHALE SEASON🐋

The 2025/2026 season yielded significant results for the monitoring of humpback whales in Patagonia Azul Provincial Park. The Fundación Rewilding Argentina team identified more than 130 individual whales through photo-identification, including over 100 new whales never before documented in the area.

The team recorded much valuable data. They tracked residency patterns, with some whales staying within the provincial park for over three months, as well as whale movements, with one whale traveling all the way to the South Orkney Islands in Antarctica!

These results confirm Patagonia Azul as a critical site for the species, but they also support an important message: that marine protected areas need to be strengthened and expanded!

HUEMUL MATING SEASON 🦌🍂

With the arrival of autumn in Patagonia comes one of the most important times for the huemul deer: mating season! During this period, males search for females in heat, traveling long distances and closely following them through the forest. This search can lead to competition - when several males meet, confrontations can occur, determining who gets to reproduce.

⚠️ This is an important reminder to drive carefully on the Carretera Austral during this season as huemul deer are more active and may cross roads unexpectedly!

These encounters were recorded near Cerro Castillo National Park, by Fundación Rewilding Chile's wildlife team.

THERE ARE NOW 50 WILD JAGUARS IN IBERÁ PARK!

A huge milestone! In April, our offspring Fundación Rewilding Argentina confirmed the birth of the 50th wild jaguar recorded in Iberá. The cub is the offspring of Porá, one of the first females in the reintroduction project.

Since the start of the Jaguar Reintroduction Breeding Program in 2012, TC has worked with RA to rewild this top predator which went extinct in Corrientes and Chaco provinces over 70 years ago. Now, the Iberá model of rewilding has inspired an even greater movement, the Jaguar Rivers Initiative, which will expand this vision of species and ecosystem restoration throughout the heart of South America.

“Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.”

This quote from environmentalist Edward Abbey is a driving force in the philosophy of our work. For us all to survive and thrive, the only answer is collective action. This , we join millions around the globe who are fighting for a more beautiful, wild, and equitable world.🌎

This work would not be possible without the generations of TC, Fundación Rewilding Argentina and Fundación Rewilding Chile teammates in the field, local experts, community members, allies and so many more who have decided to take action.

How will you take action this Earth Day?

📖🌎OUT NOW: Homesick for a World Unknown: The Life of George B. Schaller

HOMESICK FOR A WORLD UNKNOWN by Miriam Horn is a riveting portrait of Dr. George B. Schaller, legendary scientist and “father of conservation biology,” that captures the seventy years he spent living among wild animals in the world’s remotest regions, forever altering how we see—and save—the natural world. Science Magazine called the book “a magnificent tribute.”

Dr. Schaller was the first to conduct extensive field research on gorillas, pandas, lions, tigers, snow leopards, jaguars and many other species. His work has led to the creation of more than 20 parks and reserves worldwide and he’s mentored numerous young wildlife biologists, many who are now leading experts in their fields and some of the most effective conservationists in the world.

He has been an inspiration to our co-founders, Doug and Kris Tompkins, and visited projects in Chile and Argentina, where he also inspired the teams in the field, who are continuing his legacy of protecting and restoring the wild places and creatures of our shared planet.
