Thank you for your support and interest in this endeavor!

Akatia is a rehabilitation center for primates resulting from wild animal trafficking. A BIT MORE DETAIL:

In the past 18 years, the wild chimpanzee population in Cote D’Ivoire has decreased by an estimated 90%. As a member of CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), the Ivorian government has stepped up protection and enforcement efforts to apprehend traffickers and to recover trafficked endangered species. Unfortunately, a lack of education on the importance of species preservation, as well as the economic motivation in local communities to take part in the illegal wildlife trade hinders the success of these efforts. Additionally, the lack of an appropriate facility to care for rescued animals obstructs the government’s ability to enforce its anti-trafficking and wildlife laws. Right now, confiscated chimpanzees are sent to the National Zoo in Abidjan, which lacks the resources, space and capacity to care for these animals. Akatia will work to improve the welfare of captive primates throughout Cote D’Ivoire by ensuring humane living conditions and providing enrichment and intellectual stimulation. As conservation efforts in Guinea, the Congo and other countries have shown, sanctuaries are critical to the success of conservation initiatives for chimpanzees and other primates. Sanctuaries provide intensive 24-hour care to rescued chimps who often suffer from psychological and physical trauma after their rescue. Living in a sanctuary not only helps orphaned chimpanzees recover, but the semi-free environment of a sanctuary also allows chimps to be rehabilitated by providing them with the necessary environment to thrive. For certain qualified individuals, this rehabilitation will eventually lead to reintroduction to the wild, providing a critical reinforcement of wild chimpanzee populations. On a broader scale, Akatia will work toward combating the illegal trade of chimpanzees and other wildlife through local conservation education, sensitization, environmental protection, and community development efforts.

💚 Cody met his veterinarian !

👨🏾‍⚕️ On the very day he arrived, after an initial check-up by our team, we brought in our veterinarian to make sure nothing had been overlooked and to quickly begin the first medical examinations.

💉 Over the following days, several tests were carried out, including blood work, a stool sample and general health checks, helping us assess his overall condition more thoroughly.

🌳 We are still waiting for the results, but these first steps were essential to prepare for his transfer to the forest in the coming days, where he will begin his quarantine.

💵 Every rescue involves veterinary care and medical tests that cannot always be anticipated. In these final hours of Early Giving, your support will help us continue providing Cody with the medical care and monitoring he needs !

💚 Première étape : check up de Cody !

💚 First step: Cody’s check-up!

Still hidden under the caretaker’s shirt, we take Cody somewhere quiet and isolated before revealing him.

👀 Once we are settled, there is a sense of relief: the baby appears to be in good health. His abdomen, limbs, head and teeth are checked. He is active and mobile, with no apparent injuries or fractures, and his healthy teeth help us estimate his age at between 1 and 2 years old.

Cody is still a very young chimpanzee, and today we only know a small part of his story. But his care and daily monitoring will already help us understand some of the consequences of what he has been through, long before the investigation reveals all the details...

💵 So this Early Giving, give us the means to provide him with a safe environment, appropriate care and the time he needs to recover.

💚 Meet Cody !

🚨 On Friday morning, September 11, Akatia was contacted by the Department of Wildlife and Hunting Resources to rescue this baby chimpanzee. A housekeeper had been taking care of him for five months. But everything else — where he came from, his mother, his group — is still to be discovered.

🤝🏾 We sincerely thank the Ivorian authorities for the investigation they carried out, for reporting Cody’s situation to us, and for their trust in our work. Together, we have given him the chance to begin a new chapter in his life...

💵 ... and what about you? You can also be part of his story by dedicating your donation to Cody during this Giving Day for Apes, helping cover the costs of his rescue and ongoing care.

And because there are no coincidences, today is Early Giving ! You can already help give Cody a second chance.

🐒 Thank you to the Global Animal Rescue Trust (GART) for their trust and for choosing to join the Akatia journey.

This collaboration feels particularly meaningful to us. GART has taken a genuine interest in our work, our team and the realities we face on the ground, understanding our needs and the place we could have within their network.

On the ground, circumstances can sometimes be challenging, and we often have to adapt the resources we have to these realities. But we keep moving forward, learning and building, with the conviction that our work can make a real difference for the animals we protect.

📈 Having this work recognised and our potential acknowledged means a great deal to us. It encourages us to keep moving forward and to continue growing Akatia.

💚 We are very happy to now be part of this community and to build what comes next together.

🌿 Thank you to Williams and Charlotte Parks Foundation for their renewed support of Akatia.

After a particularly challenging period for our sanctuaries and a major reorganisation of our activities, this support means more to us than ever.

It allows us to continue ensuring the well-being of our primates, their enrichment and behavioural care, while also supporting the teams who care for them every day.

And among them, our caregivers play an essential role. They know each animal, notice the smallest changes, and are there every day to provide them with the best possible care.

📸 With staff taking turns and taking well-deserved time off, it is rare to have all five of our caregivers together at the sanctuary at the same time. This photo was therefore a special opportunity to put them in the spotlight.

At a time when we are rebuilding and reorganising many aspects of our work, being able to count once again on such loyal and essential support truly makes a difference.

Thank you, Williams and Charlotte Parks Foundation, for being there for us once again.

🐒 J-30 avant le Giving Day for Apes 2026 !

🌿 15 septembre : Early Giving
🐒 7 octobre : Giving Day

💚 Chaque don compte.

🐒 30 days until Giving Day for Apes 2026 !

📅 The countdown is on ! In 30 days, Giving Day will officially begin, but you can already support us from September 15th during Early Giving — just 7 days to go !

Early Giving donations count towards Giving Day and can also help us win a prize at the end of the event.

Once again this year, we need your support to continue improving the well-being of our chimpanzees : securing their food supply, improving their living conditions and, with a significant enough donation, potentially even funding a brand-new enclosure to help us provide a safe home for more chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

🌿 September 15 : Early Giving
🐒 October 7 : Giving Day

💚 Every donation makes a difference. Help us give them the future they deserve.

👌🏻 Ce qui nous rassemble dans ce même genre, entre autre : le fameux pouce opposable ;
