International Labour Organization Promoting decent work and social justice in Africa. The ILO became the first specialized agency of the UN in 1946.

The ILO was founded in 1919, in the wake of a destructive war, to pursue a vision based on the premise that universal, lasting peace can be established only if it is based on social justice. The first office of the ILO in Africa was established in 1959 in Lagos, Nigeria. In 1965 the ILO was the first UN agency to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with what is now called the African Union. The un

ique tripartite structure of the ILO gives an equal voice to workers, employers and governments to ensure that the views of the social partners are closely reflected in labour standards and in shaping policies and programmes.

Climate change is already affecting lives and livelihoods across Africa 🌍

Yet those who are often most exposed, including migrant workers, refugees and other displaced people, are too often the least protected.

There can be no just transition without social protection for all.

As the region most affected by climate change and with the lowest levels of social protection coverage, Africa cannot afford a transition that leaves people behind. Strengthening social protection is essential to protect workers, support families and communities, and build resilience in the face of growing climate shocks.

This new ILO brief offers practical guidance on how to extend social protection in the context of climate change, helping make the transition to greener and more resilient economies fairer and more inclusive 🤝

🌿 On International Wellness Day, we are reminded that well-being is not only about our personal lives, but also about the conditions in which people work every day.

Everyone has the right to a safe and healthy working environment. Protecting workers’ safety, health and dignity helps build stronger workplaces, healthier communities and a more just future for all. 💙

In Africa and around the world, investing in safer and healthier work means investing in people, productivity and social justice. 🌍🤝

🌍 Africa is already feeling the labour market risks of the Middle East crisis.

Higher fuel, transport and food costs are putting growing pressure on jobs, incomes and working conditions across the continent, especially for vulnerable workers, small businesses and low-income households.

This is not only about inflation. It is also about whether families can keep up with the rising cost of living, whether small enterprises can stay afloat, and whether workers can hold onto decent jobs in an increasingly uncertain environment.

Our new ILO blog looks at why early action matters, and why protecting jobs, incomes and social protection systems now is so important.

In Cameroon, waste is being transformed into something far more valuable: safer jobs, better incomes and greater dignity at work. ♻️🦺

In Yaoundé, support from the ILO has helped improve working conditions for more than 150 scrap metal workers, while also cleaning up a site that had been neglected for years. It is a powerful example of how formalisation, safety, skills and the green transition can work together to create decent work. 🌍

This is what social justice looks like in practice: protecting workers, strengthening livelihoods and building a more sustainable future for all.

🌍 Advancing justice for migrant workers in Africa: lessons from Kenya

For many migrant workers, access to justice can feel out of reach, especially for women and young people who often face the greatest barriers.

Last week in Kenya, the ILO FAIRWAY programme and Global Justice Group worked together to move things forward by shaping a Legal Roadmap on Access to Justice for Migrant Workers.

This is about something very practical: making sure workers know where to go, who can support them, and how to seek justice when their rights are violated.

💬 A key part of the conversation focused on informal justice mechanisms, often the first place migrant workers turn:

• Are they safe and accessible?
• Do they actually resolve problems?
• How can they better protect women migrant workers?

Most importantly, migrant workers themselves shared their experiences and helped shape the way forward.

🤝 The lessons from Kenya can help strengthen access to justice for migrant workers across Africa.

What can inclusive finance make possible?

In Kenya, it is helping people like Saidi Hota, Bahati Birengo and Huda Abarken grow their businesses, strengthen their livelihoods and build a more secure future.

Across communities and enterprises, better access to finance is helping unlock growth, resilience and opportunity.

Through the Prospects ILO partnership, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ILO is helping expand economic opportunities for forcibly displaced persons and host communities in Kenya.

This is not just about access to money. It is about creating the conditions for decent work, dignity and hope.

🤝 When women come together, change begins to happen.

In Mbao, Senegal 🇸🇳, Yaye Coumba Seck and other women fish processors are showing how collective action can transform lives. Through their cooperative, they are gaining recognition for their work, building confidence, and speaking out for equal pay and workplaces free from violence and harassment.

Across Africa, many women in the informal economy are organizing not only to improve their incomes, but also to strengthen their voices and claim their rights at work.

Yaye Coumba’s story reminds us that when women workers stand together, they are helping build safer, fairer and more inclusive workplaces for everyone.

🍫 What does sustainable cocoa look like in practice?

In Côte d’Ivoire’s Nawa region, it looks like children in school, farmers improving safety on their farms, women strengthening their incomes, and young people building skills for the future.

This week, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Côte d’Ivoire, Jeroen Kelderhuis, visited cocoa-growing communities to see firsthand how the ILO ACCEL Africa project is helping turn this vision into reality.

From school canteens supplied by local women’s cooperatives, to innovative biochar production from cocoa waste, to young people gaining skills for decent work, communities are working together to build sustainable cocoa supply chains free from child labour.

Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, these initiatives are helping families diversify their incomes, strengthen social protection, and ensure that children stay in school and enjoy their childhood.

Thank you to the communities of Zakéoua, Kotabléoua and Bagoliéoua for the warm welcome and for sharing their inspiring stories.

Cocoa farming supports families and connects Ghana to the world. But no child’s future should be shaped by labour instead of learning.

In Bibiani, Western North Region, the ILO-supported CLIMATE COCOA Project, funded by the Government of Japan, has helped communities strengthen livelihoods while tackling the root causes of child labour.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

👦🏿 218 children identified in child labour were supported through remediation
🚲 50 bicycles were provided to help children travel safely to school
🏫 A new 4-unit classroom block, kitchen, toilets and water system improved the learning environment
🍂 45 tons of climate-smart biochar were produced from cocoa pods
👩🏿‍🌾 262 farmers applied biochar to restore soil fertility and increase yields

By strengthening Child Labour-Free Zones and introducing climate-smart farming practices, communities are building safer futures for children while improving family incomes.

As Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana said during the closure event: “This shared benefit must never come at the expense of children.”

We thank Embassy of Japan in Ghana and JICA Ghana for their strong partnership and continued commitment to a Ghana free from child labour.

🌍 Violence and harassment at work remain widespread in West Africa.

New ILO research conducted in Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal reveals the scale of the issue. During their working lives:

➡ 65% of workers in Senegal
➡ 58% in Côte d’Ivoire
➡ 43% in Burkina Faso

have experienced at least one form of violence and harassment.

Psychological violence is the most common form. Physical and sexual violence also remain prevalent.

The impacts go far beyond the workplace. They affect workers’ health, confidence and productivity. They affect enterprises. They affect communities.

A world of work free from violence and harassment is fundamental to decent work and social justice.

What about the day after International Women's Day?

It’s 2026 and women still earn about 20% less than men on average. This is unacceptable.

Gaps persist in employment, earnings and leadership roles. At today’s pace, equality in employment could take nearly two centuries in Africa.

There is no without gender equality. On the day after , let's pick up the pace to create real change!
