Tibetan Youth Association in Europe

Today, the TYAE is the largest Tibetan youth organization in Europe. Heute ist der VTJE die grösste tibetische Jugendorganisation in Europa.

The increasing awareness of one's own situation as refugees as well as the moral responsibility to our own people and country led to the foundation of the Tibetan Youth Association in Europe (TYAE) in the spring of 1970. The voluntariness and the insight of the members regarding the necessity of their commitment build the essential foundation of the association.

ewusstwerden der eigenen Lage als Flüchtlinge wie auch die moralische Verantwortung dem eigenen Volk und Land gegenüber führten im Frühjahr 1970 zur Gründung des Verein Tibeter Jugend in Europa (VTJE). Mit direkten Aktionen, Kampagnen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, aber auch durch Vermittlung von Kultur, Religion und Sprache setzt sich der VTJE dafür ein, dass Tibet nicht in Vergessenheit gerät und ein Wandel geschieht.

Die politische Menschenrechtslage in Tibet bleibt bis anhin extrem schwach und Tibet wird seit Jahren als das Land mit der geringsten Freiheit weltweit eingestuft.

Tibeterinnen und Tibeter sind bis HEUTE gezwungen ihr Heimatland zu verlassen und hoffen auf Sicherheit und Freiheit im Exil.

Die tibetische Diaspora in der Schweiz geniesst viele Freiheiten und Rechte, von denen unsere Brüder und Schwestern in Tibet nur träumen können. Dennoch stellt die transnationale Repression durch den chinesischen Staat eine Gefahr für die tibetische Diaspora in der Schweiz dar. Wir sind immer noch auf die Hilfestellung der Schweiz angewiesen, um gemeinsam für Demokratie und Menschenrechte einzustehen!

Drawing from decades of academic research and firsthand experience, Dr. Gyal Lo offers unique insights into contemporary developments in China and their implications for Tibet’s future.

On June 4, we remember the students and young people who gathered peacefully in Beijing in 1989 to call for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
Their movement was violently suppressed, and the exact number of victims remains unknown.

As Tibetan youth in Europe, we honor their courage and stand in solidarity with all those who continue to defend human dignity, freedom, and fundamental rights through peaceful means.
We remember June 4. Never Forget.

Vor 31 Jahren verschwand ein sechsjähriger tibetischer Junge.

Sein Name ist Gendhun Choekyi Nyima. Nachdem er im Mai 1995 von Seiner Heiligkeit dem Dalai Lama als 11. Panchen Lama — der zweithöchsten spirituellen Autorität im tibetischen Buddhismus — anerkannt worden war, wurde er wenige Tage später gemeinsam mit seiner Familie von den chinesischen Behörden verschleppt.
Seitdem wurde er nie wieder öffentlich gesehen.

Sein Verschwinden folgte Jahre nachdem der 10. Panchen Lama offen über das Leid und die Unterdrückung des tibetischen Volkes unter chinesischer Herrschaft gesprochen hatte. Nach seinem Tod stand die Suche nach seiner Wiedergeburt unter massivem politischen Druck der Kommunistischen Partei Chinas.

In einem beispiellosen Eingriff in den tibetischen Buddhismus setzte die chinesische Regierung ihren eigenen „Panchen Lama“ ein, um ihre Kontrolle über Tibet zu legitimieren. Diese Ernennung wird von der tibetisch-buddhistischen Gemeinschaft nicht anerkannt.

Mehr wie drei Jahrzehnte später weiss die Welt noch immer nicht, wo sich der wahre Panchen Lama befindet.

Zum 31. Jahrestag seines gewaltsamen Verschwindens erinnern wir an Gendhun Choekyi Nyima und fordern Transparenz, Rechenschaft und seine Freiheit.

Today, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima turns 37.
Recognized as the 11th Panchen Lama at age 6, he was taken by Chinese authorities just three days later. That was 31 years ago.
We remember. We say his name.

Little recap of our 57th General Assembly!

Under this year’s motto, “Young Voices for Tibet,” we came together from April 3–4 for three inspiring days. We reflected on the past year, took part in insightful workshops, and explored topics ranging from calligraphy and the work of chithues to Buddhist rituals around death and China’s propaganda strategies.

But above all, it was about being together. Seeing the semshuk and motivation within our members makes us incredibly excited for what the coming year will bring.
