At GreenLamp, environmental sustainability is embedded in how we improve maternal healthcare and opportunities for women in rural Ethiopia.

🔆 Through our LIGHT programme, GreenLamp and its partners have installed more that 333 solar systems powering lighting, refrigeration and energy to off-grid health centres. These systems have provided safer birthing conditions and healthcare services for around 1.7 million deliveries, as well as better working conditions for midwives.

By harnessing solar energy, we reduce the dependence of health systems on fuel-powered generators. This lowers greenhouse gas emissions, limits exposure to volatile fuel costs and supply disruptions, and helps ensure essential healthcare services can continue even when access to fuel becomes uncertain.

🌳 This World Environment Day, we are reminded that climate action and human development go hand in hand. Every solar-powered health centre represents a brighter future for mothers, babies, healthcare workers and the environment.

Obstetric fistula is one of the most devastating and least discussed childbirth injuries. More than 500,000 women worldwide are affected, even though the condition is almost entirely preventable and treatable.

It occurs when prolonged, obstructed labour is left unmanaged, causing a hole to form between the birth canal and the bladder and/or re**um. The result is continuous incontinence, infections, chronic health complications, and often deep social isolation.

Those most affected are typically young women living in poverty, often in remote areas with little or no access to skilled birth attendants or emergency obstetric care.

With access to a trained midwife, obstetric fistula can be prevented.
With access to skilled surgical care, it can be repaired.

Ending obstetric fistula is possible. But it requires greater investment in midwives, stronger maternal healthcare systems, and global attention to a condition that should no longer exist.

What a day! We are so happy and grateful for ’s day at . It was a day filled with community, joy, energy, and hope — exactly what is needed to create lasting change.

A huge thank you to everyone who walked, ran, cheered, donated and visited in Lund. All funds raised in connection with the run will go directly to student support packages (food and accommodation) for midwifery students at Hamlin College of Midwives in Addis Ababa.

Because of your support, more young women can pursue their dreams of returning to their home villages with knowledge that will change the future for many others beyond themselves.

Together, we make a difference — one step at a time. 🏃‍♀️✨

Think back to the moment you entered this world. A midwife was likely the first to care for you and your mother.

One of the most essential healthcare professionals in the world, a midwife supports women, newborns and families at life’s most vulnerable and transformative moments.

And yet millions of people who need a midwife still don’t have access to one.

Closing this gap could prevent the majority of maternal and newborn deaths, reduce unnecessary interventions, and ensure that every woman receives care that is safe, dignified and grounded in her rights.

On this International Day of the Midwife, let’s celebrate their impact and commit to a world where every woman, everywhere, has a midwife by her side.

The 1st of May marks International Workers' Day, a moment to recognise the importance of workers' rights and the labour movement that advocates fair and safe working conditions.

In Ethiopia, many midwives carry out life‑saving work in remote and resource‑limited settings, often without even the basic professional clothing they need for safety and recognition.

Through a recent collaboration between GreenLamp Sweden and Midwives Without Borders, we raised funds to provide some Hamlin-graduated midwives with appropriate work outfits for their vital roles supporting women and newborns across the country. These uniforms, simple as they may seem, make a meaningful difference in their daily work. They were proudly presented at regional meetings in Bahir Dar and Metu.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that something as simple as light can mean the difference between life and death 🌍

In rural Ethiopia, reliable light is essential for safe maternal care. Through GreenLamp’s LIGHT pillar, we equip health centres with solar energy systems that allow midwives to provide care with greater safety and consistency. In 2025 alone, over 35,000 births took place in maternity rooms powered by GreenLamp's solar support.

Clean energy is not just about the planet, it’s about people. It’s about safe births, empowered midwives and stronger communities.

Join us on this transformative journey by donating today. Every contribution makes a difference.

What do solar lighting, maternal health, and a powerful book about humanitarian work have in common?

They came together on March 6, when GreenLamp members and supporters gathered in Zurich for our Annual General Meeting and a special fundraising event.

During the AGM, we reflected on our impact in Ethiopia and shared updates across our three pillars: Learn (Beatrice Friedli), Light (Joanna Boyd, with guest Samson Tsegaye, CEO of The Solar Energy Foundation), and Lead (Anna Roos Broekhuijsen). We also announced that Valéria Akroyd and Anna Roos Broekhuijsen have taken on the role of Co-Chairs.

Following the AGM, guests enjoyed a reading from The Bright Fabric of Life by .collie, a consultant surgeon whose humanitarian work in sub-Saharan Africa centres on treating childbirth injuries, and then joined her for a rich conversation exploring both her book and the realities of obstetric fistula.

The afternoon concluded with the LIT ceremony, where Astrid Hébert presented GreenLamp with the Spotlight Prize for remarkable work through lighting solutions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed to the success of the event, and continues to support our mission to improve maternal health and opportunities for women in Ethiopia 💚

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the power of women leading change in their communities.

At GreenLamp, our LEAD pillar focuses on empowering midwives with education, training, and professional networks so they can grow as confident leaders. Through initiatives like the Hamlin Midwife Alumni Network (HMAN), midwives across rural Ethiopia stay connected, continue learning and support one another in improving maternal care.

Their leadership goes beyond the delivery room, from advising on family planning and infant nutrition to advocating against harmful practices such as FGM.

When midwives lead, entire communities benefit 💚
