This week GreenLamp had the privilege of participating in the exceptional Giving Women Conference, where WoNgel Alemayehu shared her powerful story as a beneficiary of a GreenLamp midwife scholarship and the impact of our LEARN, LIGHT, LEAD pillars.

Wongel reminded us of a simple but profound truth: one midwife can change a whole community. Her call to action was clear … invest in people before equipment. Skills, knowledge, and leadership are what create lasting change.

A heartfelt thank you to Giving Women for convening such an inspiring event, bringing together grassroots leaders, practitioners, funders, researchers, and global voices who are driving real change for women and girls in underserved communities.

GreenLamp was also represented by .akroyd, our co-chair, along with two of our committed volunteers, .mclay and Kim Jordi. Grateful for this community and the momentum we’re building together.

Three years in the making. And now, the lights are on. 💡☀️

Installing our Enhanced Solar Systems in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region has been a major achievement — made possible not by one organisation, but by partnership and teamwork.

Since 2014, GreenLamp and its partners have worked together to support rural health facilities across the region with solar energy solutions, with the latest installations representing the most recent phase of this long-term programme.

Working together with Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, Solar Energy Foundation, the Amhara Regional Health Bureaus and local installation teams, GreenLamp installed enhanced solar energy solutions in 14 Rural Health Centres across the region between June and September 2026.

The journey wasn't easy. Security challenges meant the original plans had to be put on hold for several years. But the partners found a way forward through follow up and discussion — identifying safer locations and adapting the approach so the systems could finally be put to work.

And the impact goes far beyond solar panels.

Reliable solar-powered light in maternal delivery rooms helps midwives provide safer, more dignified care to mothers and babies — particularly during births at night. Solar-powered refrigeration also means essential medicines such as oxytocin can be available close to where they are needed.

Today, on Sustainable Development Goals Flag Day, we celebrate the global goals that guide our work 🌍

GreenLamp’s holistic approach contributes to five interconnected SDGs:

Melkam Addis Amet to our Ethiopian friends and partners!
As many settle into September routines, communities in Ethiopia are welcoming the start of 2019. Their 13 month calendar marks the New Year on Meskerem 1, when the rains end and the countryside turns gold with adey abeba blossoms — a symbol of renewal and hope.
For GreenLamp, this moment reflects the journeys of young women becoming midwives and graduate midwives stepping into leadership roles in the communities we proudly support.
May this New Year bring even more learning, light, and leadership!

🇸🇪💚 Our GreenLamp Sweden team hosted a wonderful fundraising evening!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our Swedish team for an evening dedicated to learning more about GreenLamp, connecting with our community, and supporting our work to improve maternal healthcare in Ethiopia.

We are especially grateful to our new Co-President, Anna Roos, who shared more about GreenLamp’s work, vision, and upcoming projects. A big thank you also goes to our amazing volunteers, Tessen von Geijer and Jonathan Pettersson, who created the inspiring film shown during the evening and helped bring our work and vision to life.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who participated in the lottery and made generous donations. Your support helps us continue working towards safer births and a brighter future for mothers and babies in Ethiopia. 💚

Since 2012, GreenLamp has been working to create a brighter future for women and their communities in rural Ethiopia.

Through our holistic Learn | Light | Lead approach, we support young women to become skilled and compassionate midwives, equip rural health centres with sustainable solar power, and strengthen midwives as leaders and role models in their communities.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, partners and volunteers, GreenLamp has achieved meaningful impact:

💚 84 midwifery scholarships funded
💡 333 solar systems installed in rural health centres
👶 Over 1.7 million deliveries supported with solar lighting
🌍 Around 2.3 million women reached through access to quality maternal healthcare, skilled midwives and solar lighting
🤝 A network of 300+ Hamlin midwives supported through professional development and peer exchange
📚 272 midwifery students trained in leadership and communication skills

Behind every number is a mother giving birth in safer conditions, a midwife able to work with confidence, and a community with better access to maternal healthcare.

We are thankful to everyone who has made this journey possible. Together, we are helping midwives thrive and when midwives thrive, communities thrive.

What an incredible honour!

GreenLamp has been recognised with a Distinguished Partner Award by the Ethiopian Minister of Health - a celebration of the partnerships that are helping transform maternal healthcare across Ethiopia.

Healthy mothers, safe births and solar-powered health centres. These are the outcomes that inspire our work - and on Friday 26 June, they were recognised during the opening of the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia 2026 Partners International Meeting.

At GreenLamp, we believe lasting change happens when organisations work together. During the meeting, the Ethiopian Minister of Health shared the remarkable news that the country's maternal mortality rate has fallen to 141 deaths per 100,000 live births - down from 195 in the latest internationally published estimates and a testament to the progress achieved through partnerships across Ethiopia.

We are proud to play our part by:
🎓 Educating and supporting skilled midwives
☀️ Bringing reliable solar power to rural health centres
🌱 Strengthening leadership and building resilient local health systems

We are especially delighted that three outstanding Hamlin midwives Mastewal Andualem, Mihret Aschalew and Samrawit Atalay were also recognised for their courage, innovation and clinical excellence during the meeting. Two of these exceptional midwives work in health centres with solar power and light installed by GreenLamp, while another is delivering care in a health centre with recently installed solar-powered facilities in the Amhara Region.

Their dedication, compassion and professionalism are transforming the lives of women and newborns every single day.

Our award belongs to everyone who has supported GreenLamp over the years - our members, donors, volunteers, corporate partners and friends. Your commitment has helped ensure more mothers can give birth safely, more midwives can work with confidence, and more rural communities have access to reliable healthcare.

At GreenLamp, environmental sustainability is embedded in how we improve maternal healthcare and opportunities for women in rural Ethiopia.

🔆 Through our LIGHT programme, GreenLamp and its partners have installed more that 333 solar systems powering lighting, refrigeration and energy to off-grid health centres. These systems have provided safer birthing conditions and healthcare services for around 1.7 million deliveries, as well as better working conditions for midwives.

By harnessing solar energy, we reduce the dependence of health systems on fuel-powered generators. This lowers greenhouse gas emissions, limits exposure to volatile fuel costs and supply disruptions, and helps ensure essential healthcare services can continue even when access to fuel becomes uncertain.

🌳 This World Environment Day, we are reminded that climate action and human development go hand in hand. Every solar-powered health centre represents a brighter future for mothers, babies, healthcare workers and the environment.
