Good news, climate action works! 🌍

For years, climate scientists used a worst-case scenario called RCP8.5 to model the most extreme outcomes of unchecked emissions. New research suggests this pathway is becoming increasingly unlikely, thanks to the rapid growth of renewable energy and climate policies that are starting to make a difference. 💙

But let's be clear: this doesn't mean that we're saved. We're still on track for significant warming, and our mountains, glaciers, and winters will continue to feel the impact.

What it does show is that action makes a difference. And that's exactly why we keep going. 🏔️

Glaciers can't take the heat 🏔️💦

We are not the only ones feeling this heatwave. Our glaciers are too! After our campaign «Keep Swiss Glaciers Cool», we remain committed to keeping our community informed and protecting as much of this “eternal ice” as possible.

According to glaciologist and POW Alliance member Matthias Huss, this week’s temperatures have led to “…a phase of rapid mass loss. Glacier runoff is expected to be more than 100% above normal, close to the levels of the extreme year 2022.”

With a significant snow deficit at the end of winter, there is very little snow left to shield glaciers from the heat. This accelerates their melt even further🧊

This is happening now. Let’s not look away.

And suddenly it's summer 🌡️💦

A series of very hot days is already behind us, and more are ahead. This kind of heat is not normal for May. Days like these used to be rare at this time of year, but as the climate warms, they are becoming more frequent. Summer is arriving earlier and shifting into what used to be spring.

We can feel this change in the mountains as well. Many people head to higher altitudes to escape the heat, but even there relief is no longer guaranteed. Today, the zero-degree line is expected to rise to around 4,400 meters. For comparison, the average in May in Switzerland is about 2,605 meters above sea level. 🏔️🌊

The impacts of climate change are no longer distant. We are already experiencing them here and now.

Now is the time to act. Join POW, raise your voice, and help protect the places we all love. Together, we can drive real change. 💙

Long weekend ahead🎿🏃🏻‍♂️🚲

What are you up to? Chasing some last turns in fresh powder in the mountains? Or did you already dig out your bike or trail running shoes?

Either way let’s make the most of the time outside and take care of the places we love while we’re at it🏔️

Another General Assembly in the books📚

General Assembly sounds boring? Doesn’t have to be! Every year, we invite our members to come together and present what we’ve been working on and what will be the focus of our work for the coming year. This year was very special, as for the first time we introduced a new General Manager to POW!

We also gave participants an exclusive look into our newest project, and they immediately brought a lot of great ideas to the table. Thank you to everyone who participated. We love meeting you in real life and getting to know the POW community better💙

Did you know that members can actively shape POW’s work? POW is an association, meaning that its members can vote on certain matters, ask questions, and be part of important decisions that shape the future of our organization.

Not a member yet? Join us and be part of the change!

What an evening! 🏔️✨

Last week, during Zurich's first ever Climate Week, we hosted the event «Glaciers in Conversation» and wow, you showed up!

Almost 100 people came to hear about glaciers and different perspectives on them. We want to say thank you to everyone who joined us for this special night. Also a huge thank you to our incredible speakers Anthony Patt, Emiliana Rickenmann and Sina Candrian for sharing their unique perspectives on glaciers, climate, and why they matter, from science, activism and sport. Also a big shout-out to Pamela EA for guiding the conversation so brilliantly.

The breakout sessions sparked some truly inspiring discussions, with so many thoughtful questions from the audience. This is exactly the kind of conversation we need more of.

Switzerland has around 1,400 glaciers. And we keep saying: That's 1,400 reasons to act🧊

Thank you also to our partners Climatewords and Patagonia Zürich for making this evening possible.

See you at the next one! 👋
