The Swiss Foundation for Art in Regions of Conflict
is an independent, impartial operational foundation.

Funded by donations from many members of civil
society, it was established in the year 2011.

Artas Community Event 2026

What can dance contribute in conflict regions? What does solidarity among arts organisations mean in practice? How do we work in increasingly authoritarian contexts?

We invite you to join us on 24 November at Tanzhaus Zürich to hear from artasfoundation staff and partners, exchange perspectives and learn about our current work.

The programme includes insights into our activities in Syria, workshops in Switzerland and a look ahead to Frontlines of Engagement in February 2027. There will be time for informal conversations and a short participatory dance experience led by Kilian Haselbeck and Meret Schlegel of Cie zeitSprung.

Art in Conflict – Discussion Series
Shifting Power Through Storytelling

How can storytelling shift power? What responsibilities come with bringing sensitive political stories to the screen?

Join documentary filmmakers Maša Hilčišin and Tamar Yarom for a conversation on personal experience, collective memory and political reality. Together, we will explore the possibilities and limits of representation: how much violence should be shown, whose perspectives become visible, and how artistic storytelling can create spaces for transformation and empowerment.

Both speakers will join online.

Why talk about art while wars are raging?
Because art often keeps spaces for encounter open when other forms of dialogue have reached their limits.

Since 2024, these questions have been at the heart of "Art in Conflict", a monthly conversation series curated by and realised together with the Cooperation for Art and Peacebuilding (CAP) at Zurich University of the Arts and Gessnerallee Zürich.

In our work in the , the and , we see how art creates spaces for encounter where other forms of dialogue reach their limits. "Art in Conflict" carries this experience further: artists and researchers from different regions share their perspectives with an international audience, on site in Zurich and online, making the realities of conflict tangible beyond headlines and simplification.

Each partner brings its own strength: CAP links the series to teaching and research, Gessnerallee offers its stage, and we contribute our curatorial perspective and experience in the field. Together we build a lasting public space where war, crisis and peace are discussed with nuance and care.

Art in Conflict – Practice #4
Connecting Beyond Words

How can we create connection when language, distance, or preconceived narratives stand in the way?

From 16–18 October 2026 in Zürich, Shoghakat Mlké-Galstyan and Rada Leu invite participants to explore body, voice and sound as tools for working across differences.

Drawing from community-based artistic practice, the workshop will move through body-based exercises, role-play, perspective-shifting and collective reflection. Together, we will explore how artistic methods can open space for connection — while also looking critically at the challenges, limitations and failures of working with communities.

The workshop concludes with a collective soundscape, extending the exchange beyond the group itself.

Can design shift perspectives on power? Can it become a practice of solidarity?

On 16 September, the next Art in Conflict discussion brings together perspectives on design as a collective and political practice, asking how visual languages can emerge through collaboration, friendship, solidarity and resistance.

Our guest is Xaraxura, a community space and independent publishing collective based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Together, we will explore how design can question existing structures, what responsibilities come with its political dimension, and how community publishing can not only communicate knowledge, but participate in producing it.

Living Room continues its series of conversations with artists from Nagorno-Karabakh, exploring creativity, memory, and the experience of relocating artistic practices after conflict and displacement.

On 19. August, 19:00 h, we are pleased to welcome Shogher Sargsyan, an actress, and Valeri (Lyoka) Ghazaryan, a musician.

Sh. Sargsyan was an actress at the V. Papazyan Theatre in Stepanakert and continues to perform with different theatres, including the Stepanakert Theatre currently operating in Yerevan. During the blockade she co-founded the "Inadu" podcast, which was documenting people's everyday lives.

Lyoka is a musician, singer, and composer. Born in Maragha, he experienced the Maragha massacres and several displacements as a child; experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic path, with “home” as a recurring theme in his art.

Through an open conversation, our guests will reflect on the challenges and opportunities they encountered after displacement, the role of culture in resilience.

The discussion is open to everyone.

Living Room-ը շարունակում է Լեռնային Ղարաբաղից արվեստագետների հետ հանդիպումների շարքը՝ անդրադառնալով հակամարտությունից ու տեղահանությունից հետո արվեստագետի ստեղծագործական ճանապարհի շարունակությանը։

Օգոստոսի 19-ին, ժամը 19:00-ին, մեր հյուրերն են Շողեր Սարգսյանը՝ դերասանուհի և հաղորդավար, և Վալերի (Լյոկա) Ղազարյանը՝ երաժիշտ։

Շ. Սարգսյանը Ստեփանակերտի Վ. Փափազյանի անվան պետական դրամատիկական թատրոնի դերասանուհի էր և այսօր էլ շարունակում է հանդես գալ տարբեր թատրոններում։ Արցախի շրջափակման ընթացքում համահիմնել է «Ինադու» փոդքասթը, որը շրջափակման ընթացքում մարդկանց առօրյան ու ապրումները փոխանցող կարևոր ձայն էր։

Լյոկան երաժիշտ, երգիչ և կոմպոզիտոր է։ Ծնվել է Արցախի Մարաղա գյուղում և մանկության տարիներին ականատես է եղել Մարաղայի ջարդերին ու անցել մի քանի տեղահանությունների միջով։ Երաժշտության և ստեղծագործելու միջոցով նա անդրադառնում է իր ապրումներին, հաճախակի հնչեցնելով տան թեման իր արվեստում։

For the first time, our panel isn't just talking about war and polarisation. They grew up it.

This autumn 2026, Art in Conflict returns to Gessnerallee Zürich and to the for its third edition, with guests from our regions of focus, Georgia and Armenia, as well as voices that are often missing from public debates. Together, we will discuss design as a political practice, film as a medium of memory and storytelling, and literature as a collective form of working and connecting.

At the centre are artistic strategies that make power structures visible, challenge dominant narratives, and create spaces for solidarity.
The urgent issues of war and militarisation run through several of the conversations, as does the question of how we, as cultural workers, can position ourselves and take action in a time of global crises.

At the end of May and beginning of June 2026, a group of six artists – three from Armenia and three from the French-speaking part of Switzerland – met in the Armenian village of Pokr Ayrum, for the third cycle of our project "Sharing Stories".

The region is characterised by its wild and striking natural landscape as well as its long history of mining. The area is shaped by its industrial infrastructure, but also by the environmental challenges that have emerged alongside it. A place full of stories.

During this cycle, the artists expanded their visual storytelling research through activities with the art classes of a local school. In addition to meeting residents and exchanging stories, they worked with children to paint and visualise their dreams. Throughout the project, the artists not only exchanged ideas and personal experiences but also engaged with local residents involved in community activities.

The cycle concluded with an event organised by the participants at the local art school in Snogh: food, concerts, and an exhibition showcased works by the participating artists, local art teachers, and schoolchildren.

That's the of : art as a bridge between people, cultures, and experiences.

The journey continues – the second phase of this cycle takes place in the Swiss Jura region at the end of October 2026.

Living Room Discussion #2

What happens to artistic practice when the place that has shaped it is no longer there to return to?

Following our first conversation, Living Room continues its series of discussions with artists and cultural practitioners from Nagorno-Karabakh, reflecting on creativity, memory, and rebuilding artistic practice after conflict and displacement.

On July 10, the discussion will feature Vladimir Gevorgyan (photographer and theatre artist) and Yerazik Avanesyan (cultural worker), who will share their personal experiences of continuing their work after displacement, navigating the loss of place, and finding new ways to create, collaborate, and remain connected to their cultural roots.

Through personal stories and shared reflections, we will explore the challenges of preserving cultural identity, rebuilding artistic practice in a new environment, and imagining new possibilities for the future.

The discussion is open to everyone interested in art, memory, and creative identity
