For Swisscross, humanitarian surgery rests on four commitments:

01 Treatment: complex reconstructive surgery for people affected by conflict.
02 Training: working side by side with local surgeons and hospital teams.
03 Education: sharing knowledge so that quality care continues after our teams have left.
04 Research: building the evidence that improves medical care in crisis settings.

Each mission in Erbil and Kabul draws on all four. The aim is not only to restore function and dignity to individual patients, but to leave stronger medical capacity in the communities we serve.

Dr Enrique Steiger, founder of Swisscross Foundation’s vision of delivering reconstructive surgery where it is needed most continues to shape every program we run.

That work is carried out today in two places.

Kabul, Afghanistan. At Maiwand Hospital, the need for reconstructive surgery is immense and often invisible, hidden beneath layers of daily life, tradition and quiet resilience. We have worked with local healthcare providers there since late 2023.

Erbil, Kurdistan. Opened in 2021, our Centre of Excellence for Complex Care provides treatment, trains local professionals and shares expertise, so that complex surgical care becomes something the community can rely on for years to come.

Across both programs, our teams deliver orthopaedic, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, restoring function, dignity and independence.

From Erbil, with steady hands.

Last week, our international surgical team returned to the in Erbil — working alongside local medical partners to deliver reconstructive surgery to patients who need it most. After a full screening day that saw over 130 patients assessed, surgeries continued through the week: hours in theatre, quiet recovery, and small patients finding their way back to being kids again.

This is what the mission looks like up close — not just the operating table, but the partnerships, the follow-through, and the people who make it possible.
