The Limmat Foundation was founded on the 13th of March 1972. At the same time, it supports its local partners in providing quality knowledge and skills.

The Limmat Foundation pursues the vision of a world in which all people receive training that empowers them to shape their communities responsibly and for the good of all. With its well-established Project Center, the Limmat Foundation offers donors (private individuals, companies as well as foundations) tailored solutions for the implementation of their philanthropic ideas. Thanks to its many years of experience, the Limmat Foundation has built up a worldwide network of professional and competent local partners, who realize the donors' projects according to local possibilities. Through its sustainable and future-oriented commitment, the Limmat Foundation thus forms a stable bridge between donors and beneficiaries. Since the beginning in 1972, the Limmat Foundation has supported more than 1000 projects in 81 countries with donations of more than 300 million CHF in order to improve the material as well as immaterial living conditions of its beneficiaries on an individual and social level. Currently, it counts 16 sub-foundations and more than 30 earmarked funds. The Limmat Foundation has no political or religious affiliation. Rather it puts the Christian values such as solidarity, justice, peace, human dignity and family at the center of its work. Its projects are open to all people, regardless of their social origin, ethnic group or religion.

Die Limmat Stiftung wurde am 13. März 1972 gegründet und ist die älteste Dachstiftung der Schweiz mit Sitz in Zürich. Den Schwerpunkt ihrer weltweiten Tätigkeit legt sie auf Sozial- und Bildungsprojekte, wobei vor allem die Ausbildung von Ausbildnern sowie die Förderung von Frauen und Kindern im Fokus steht. Die Vision der Limmat Stiftung ist einer Welt, in der alle Menschen Bildung erhalten, sodass sie ihre Gemeinschaften verantwortungsvoll und zum Wohle aller gestalten. Mit ihrem etablierten professionellen Projektzentrum bietet die Limmat Stiftung Donatoren (Privatpersonen, Unternehmen sowie Stiftungen) massgeschneiderte Lösungen für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung ihrer philanthropischen Ideen. Gleichzeitig unterstützt sie ihre Lokalpartner mit qualitativem Wissen und hochwertigen Fähigkeiten. Dank ihrer langjährigen Erfahrung hat sie sich ein weltweites Netzwerk an fachlich kompetenten Lokalpartnern aufgebaut, welche die Vorhaben der Donatoren den Verhältnissen und Möglichkeiten vor Ort entsprechend realisieren. Durch ihren zukunftsorientierten sowie nachhaltigen Einsatz bildet die Limmat Stiftung somit eine stabile Brücke zwischen Donatoren und Begünstigten. Seit ihrer Gründung hat sie über 1000 Projekte in 81 Ländern mit mehr als 300 Millionen CHF unterstützt, um die materiellen sowie immateriellen Lebensbedingungen der Begünstigten auf individueller und gesellschaftlicher Ebene langfristig zu verbessern. Gegenwärtig zählt die Limmat Stiftung 16 Zustiftungen und mehr als 30 zweckgebundene Fonds. Die Limmat Stiftung ist politisch und konfessionell ungebunden. Vielmehr stellt sie die christlichen Werte wie Solidarität, Gerechtigkeit, Friede, Menschenwürde und Familie in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Arbeit. Ihre Projekte sind für alle Menschen offen, unabhängig von ihrer Sozialherkunft, Volksgruppe oder Religion.

🧡 Empowering girls through education 💛

In recognition of the International Day of the Girl on 11 October, the Limmat Foundation would like to highlight the importance of creating opportunities for girls to learn, grow and shape their own future.

At Punlaan School in the Philippines, young women from underserved families receive scholarships to complete a two-year Dual Training Programme in Hospitality and Culinary Arts. After successfully completing their first year, the students have earned National Certificates in Housekeeping, Cookery, Bread and Pastry Production as well as Food and Beverage Services. The next step is an on-the-job training in partner hotels and restaurants. Beyond vocational skills, Punlaan School provides mentoring and holistic support, helping students set goals and work towards greater independence.

For the Limmat Foundation, investing in girls’ education means supporting their potential and in a future with more opportunities – for them, their families as well as their communities.

💐 Resignation of Elisabeth András 💐

The Limmat Foundation announces that Elisabeth András stepped down as President and member of the Foundation Board with effect from 7 September 2026 for personal reasons.

After around 22 years on the Foundation Board, including more than 13 years as President, she has had a significant influence on the Limmat Foundation. With great dedication, expertise and knowledge, she played a key role in fulfilling the Foundation’s philanthropic mission. Her strong commitment to its values also shaped her work on the Foundation’s strategic direction. She made a significant contribution to carrying forward Toni Zweifel’s legacy and preparing the Foundation for the future. Fostering good collaboration with the staff and Executive Management was always important to her.

The Foundation Board sincerely thanks Elisabeth András for her many years of dedicated service and wishes her all the best for the future.

🌱 Zürcher Stiftungsforum 2026 – Philanthropy in focus 🌱

On 1 October, the Day of Foundations, the 2nd Zurich Foundation Forum brought together representatives from foundations, public authorities, academia and business to discuss the role as well as relevance of philanthropy in the Canton of Zurich.

Under the theme “Role and relevance in focus – where does philanthropy stand in the Canton of Zurich?”, the forum created a platform for exchange, new perspectives and collaboration. Discussions addressed a wide range of topics, from affordable housing and research transfer to international cooperation, environmental challenges, cultural diversity and democratic resilience.

As this year’s President of the “Verein Stiftungsstandort Zürich", François Geinoz, Executive Director of the Limmat Foundation, contributed to the workshop “International cooperation in transition – what role does philanthropy play?”. The discussion highlighted the importance of strategic approaches and collaboration in addressing global challenges. As Simon Sommer, CEO of the Jacobs Foundation, put it: “Have a strategy and then report on why you have fulfilled it.”

The forum provided valuable opportunities for dialogue and networking, strengthening connections across Zurich’s philanthropic ecosystem and creating space for future collaboration.

🏌 Esmeralda Charity Cup 2026 – A final with impact 🏌‍♀

The final of the Esmeralda Charity Cup took place on 23 September 2026 at Golf Club Wylihof. While the qualifying tournaments are marked by sport, enjoyment and a strong sense of community, the final traditionally brings an extra level of concentration. A special prize awaited the winners: a journey to Colombia.

Marc Garzelli (HCP 15.0) and Michael Lolli-Ghetti (HCP 7.6) secured the trophy with 46 net points. In spring 2027, they will travel to Colombia with Juan Alarcon, founder of the Esmeralda Charity Cup, to visit children’s projects supported by the Limmat Foundation and take part in a charity golf tournament.

Alongside the final, a guest tournament was held for sponsors and friends of the Limmat Foundation. In total, 72 golfers took part in both tournaments, enjoying perfect golfing conditions with blue skies and pleasant temperatures.

The day also provided an opportunity to honour a long-standing friend and supporter of the Limmat Foundation. Together with his wife Victoria, Heinrich Müller Noriega has generously supported children’s projects in Colombia since one of the first golf tournaments in the 1990s. After many decades on the board of the Limmat Foundation’s sub-foundation for street children, he stepped down in 2026 due to his age. At the dinner following the tournament, the Limmat Foundation expressed its appreciation for his many years of voluntary service.

🌞 World Gratitude Day 🌞

World Gratitude Day is a moment to pause and reflect on the people who make a difference. For the Limmat Foundation, it is an opportunity to express gratitude to the dedicated partners, organisations and supporters who contribute to creating lasting opportunities for people around the world.

Through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to education as well as social development, the Limmat Foundation is able to support meaningful projects and empower children, young people as well as adults to shape a better future.

In 2025, the Limmat Foundation supported 70 projects in 33 countries, with a total project volume of CHF 4,899,000. Behind every number are people, partnerships and countless efforts that turn ideas into real opportunities. Thank you to everyone who is part of this journey. Together, shared commitment can create lasting impact.

🌾 Empowering women and young farmers in Kisangani 🌾

In Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Limmat Foundation supports a project that empowers 150 women and young farmers through education, entrepreneurship training as well as improved access to local markets.

During the first months of the project, Farmer Field Schools were established, providing practical training in sustainable agricultural practices, soil fertility, pest management and new production methods. Women and young producers are also being trained in leadership, decision-making and the management of farmers’ organisations.

By strengthening skills, encouraging sustainable agriculture and promoting women and young people as community leaders, the project aims to create greater autonomy, sustainable income and dignity for rural families.

Today’s knowledge becomes tomorrow’s harvest.

✨ Philanthropy in entrepreneurial families ✨

On 4 September 2026, the Limmat Foundation had the pleasure of hosting the Family Business Circle Switzerland in Zurich (https://fbcs.ch/) for an inspiring evening dialogue on “Impactful Wealth – Philanthropy in Entrepreneurial Families”. The event was organized by Alma Palo and her Family Business Circle Switzerland partner Dr. Ariel Sergio Davidoff, who also guided the evening as interviewer and moderator.

Together with Elisabeth András, participants explored how entrepreneurial families can use their wealth purposefully as well as sustainably to address social challenges and create lasting impact across generations.

The evening provided an opportunity for thoughtful discussions, inspiring perspectives and valuable exchange in a personal setting. Hosting this special occasion, the Limmat Foundation was delighted to share its experience in philanthropy and social impact.

The event concluded with an apéro hosted by the Limmat Foundation – bringing the evening to a warm and engaging close.

🙏 Standing together with Colombia 🙏

On 10 August, a devastating earthquake struck Colombia, causing loss of life and severe damage to infrastructure. Pereira and Cali, two of the cities most affected, are home to projects supported by the Limmat Foundation for children, young people and caregivers in vulnerable situations.

The earthquake has severely affected public schools in Pereira where the Foundation Iwoka works, as well as the homes of childminders in Cali who have been trained through the project Saberes of the Foundation Carvajal.

The Limmat Foundation wants to help ensure that the progress made over recent years is not interrupted and that the affected communities can continue to receive vital support. A Colombia Emergency Relief Fund has therefore been established. Anyone wishing to support the affected children, young people and caregivers can contribute via the donation account of the Limmat Foundation below. Donations are tax-deductible.

🧡 Believe in yourself 🧡

For a young person growing up in rural Madagascar, talent and determination are often not enough. Distance from school, poverty, limited academic resources, lack of guidance as well as difficult family circumstances can all stand between a young person and the opportunity to complete their education. This is why CERES goes far beyond providing access to school.

During the past 20 years, CERES has supported vulnerable young people in rural Madagascar through academic support, accommodation for those living furthest away, individual educational guidance, career orientation, digital skills and personal development. Today, more than 3,000 young people are reached every year through boarding schools, education centres and school-based initiatives.

CERES alumna Tiandrainy Léonardine Tsialonina experienced the transformative power of this combination of opportunity, guidance and personal development: "Thanks to CERES, I was able to continue my education. The personal development workshops helped me understand myself better, strengthen my confidence and define my future plans. My message is: ‘Believe in yourself, keep your dreams in sight. With courage and perseverance, anything is possible.’"

By supporting CERES, the Limmat Foundation contributes not only to education, but also to creating the conditions that allow young people to turn education into a real path out of vulnerability.

🌱 Restoring nature - strengthening communities 🌱

Healthy landscapes create healthier futures. Through the project “Native PEP” (www.nativepep.org), the Limmat Foundation supports partner communities in Kenya and Tanzania in restoring degraded ecosystems while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. The project “Native PEP” is led by CABI (Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International) and Biovision Africa Trust.

In 2025, more than 10 ha of rangeland and community forest were restored, 5 km of rivers and irrigation canals cleared from invasive species, six critical water springs revitalized, and more than 200 community members trained as well as actively engaged. The project supported partner communities in helping 3 neighbouring communities to implement land restoration practices, and brought environmental education into five schools, inspiring the next generation to become stewards of their natural environment.

By combining ecological restoration with scientific innovation, community participation and education, Native PEP demonstrates that protecting nature and improving people's livelihoods go hand in hand. Together, they are building resilience for communities and ecosystems.
