We develop projects that promote displaced people's autonomy. Countries or states may have fairly distinct borders at a given time, humans don’t. We are glocal!

Glocal Roots is a not-for profit association building glocal networks that promote and enable the transition for displaced people away from dependency towards increased autonomy, resilience, and development. We build projects with the aim to support displaced people to live a self-reliant and autonomous life wherever they are now. Our name

Today so many of us come from all over the world, and live in numerous locations during our lifetimes, some of us out of choice; others because we have been displaced and might never make it home again, might never really have a home again. If we limit people to only being from the place they were born, we are denying them their true identities. Our identity is multi -layered. DEUTSCH

Heutzutage kommen wir Menschen aus der ganzen Welt und leben oft an vielen verschiedenen Orten während unseres Lebens. Einige von uns haben das so gewählt, andere wurden vertrieben und können vielleicht nie wieder nach Hause gehen. Wenn wir Menschen nur auf ihr Herkunftsland reduzieren, verleugnen wir ihre wahre Identität. Im Gegensatz zu Staaten haben Menschen keine klar definierbaren Grenzen. Unsere Identität ist vielschichtig und grenzüberschreitend. Wir sind glokal!

The Hub | Kos

Our Library is growing !

A big thank you to for their generous donation of Arabic-language books to Glocal Roots. 💙

This was also the perfect opportunity to showcase our library and the important role books play within the Hub. Our library offers a space to read, learn, relax and connect with books in different languages reflecting the diverse communities that visit us.
For many people, a book can be a small moment of comfort, a way to practise a language, reconnect with familiar stories or simply enjoy some quiet time.
We’re grateful to for helping us grow our collection and keep our library a welcoming space for everyone. 📖🌿

Social Factory | Greece & Türkiye

Meet Rafif ❤️ a skilled tailor at our Social Factory in Izmir!

Rafif is from Syria. Rafif fled from the War in Syria 13 years ago. In Türkiye, there are difficult moments but also happy moments. Working in the Social Factory is one of the happy moments.

She likes working on the machines and the possibility of creating something beautiful out of something small like a fabric.

She learnt how to sew in university. In Syria, she was a teacher for deaf children.

For own future, she would love to open her own project and sew handmade products. She is very happy here and she feels very comfortable working with all the women together.
Her favourite part is to always learn new things about the machines.

In Athens, our Community Café is more than just a place where people can get coffee. Community is crucial for integration. The Café is somewhere that people can find relief from the challenges they face outside, meet people, share stories, laugh, play and rest.

The Hub | Kos

This month we say goodbye to our wonderful intern, Valentina, who has been part of the Glocal Roots family for the past four months.
From supporting daily operations of the Hub, to creating social media content and supporting our online communications, Valentina has brought creativity, energy and enthusiasm to our team.
Thank you Valentina for everything you’ve contributed to Glocal Roots and for being such a valued part of our community. We’ve loved having you with us and we will miss having you around the Hub!

Social Factory | Greece & Türkiye

Ready for a game? 🏸

This customer order was creative and fun for the Social Factory team! Crocheted shuttlecocks were produced for the customer’s upcoming badminton tournament (stay tuned...👀).

Each shuttlecock has a story card attached to it, explaining the backstory of the woman on the move who made it. This is an important and meaningful detail across all of our products. 🤍

We’re thrilled to have helped our customer’s vision come to life, raising awareness of our cause and mission in the meantime!

We have some big news to share. ❤️

This September, after years of working towards this moment, we managed to purchase a building in Athens - a building that we hope to turn into a permanent shelter for refugees experiencing homelessness.

Anyone familiar with the situation in Athens knows how urgently spaces like this are needed. Far too many refugees - including children and families - are forced to sleep on the streets, often simply because there is nowhere else for them to go.

Our hope is to create more than just a roof over people’s heads. We want this to become a safe, permanent space where people can find stability, support and a place from which to take their first steps out of homelessness.

For us, this is huge. Truly huge.

We’ve been working towards this for the last couple of years, and seeing an idea we’ve carried for so long finally begin to materialise into something real is incredibly exciting.

But buying the building is only the beginning.

We were able to purchase the property for a very good price, which also means there is a lot of work ahead of us. The building needs renovation before we can open its doors - and we’re going to need help to make it happen.

Over the coming months, we’ll take you along on this journey: the renovation, the challenges, the progress, and hopefully, eventually, the moment we can welcome people into their new home. 🏠

The first step to making our wallets, pouches, and bumbags come to life - fabric combos!

After sourcing deadstock fabrics from the Eleonas flea market in Athens, the Social Factory team gets creative, matching outside fabrics with linings. From bright colours, different textures, and fun patterns, there's something for everyone!

As summer in Athens comes to an end, here are some of the things we got up to alongside our usual services!

We celebrated the members of our community during World Refugee Day.

We welcomed new volunteers in the VCC and said goodbye to others.
