10 December 2024 / Switzerland

The sixth storm to hit the Philippines in a month, Typhoon Man-yi made landfall on 17 November 2024 on Catanduanes Island in the northeastern part of the archipelago. Massive tidal surges and high winds damaged buildings, downed power lines and uprooted trees.

Within its Disaster Relief Program, 'Buhay Ko Bayan Ko A Better Philippines' (a Swiss organisation) has executed relief operations in Ogbong, after the recent typhoon that devastated several homes in the region.

Ogbong is a barangay in the Municipality of Viga, Catanduanes.

Our heartfelt thanks to Bicbic Tumampi (Project Manager, Switzerland) and everyone involved in the procurement, transportation, repacking and distribution of goods.

Our heartfelt thanks to Barangay Captain Edgar Lubiano and other Members of the Barangay Council, local volunteers and Ms Guia Lorin (Project Manager, Switzerland).

PLANTING SEEDS OF HOPE IN AMULUNG

Remember the typhoons Roly and Ulysses a few months ago? Houses were underwater for days and the devastation was everywhere in Amulung, Cagayan Valley, Philippines.

Buhay Ko Bayan Ko, a Swiss entity, has been supporting several communities' rebuilding efforts since the aftermath of those typhoons. Through its Green Environment Program, it has been supporting local communities in tree-planting activities.

A ‘Fruitful Pan-Tree Project’ has been added to the series of activities focusing mainly on the future needs of school children.

In collaboration with the local teachers in Amulung, high-value fruit-bearing trees are being planted on several school campuses. This is not only to help restore the native ecosystem of the area but also to help address the food and nutrition issues of young school children.

The kind of fruit trees planted were selected by the teachers themselves, ensuring appropriateness for the location and space availability.

Planted in the campuses are Avocado, Drawf Coconut, Guyabano, Guapple, Kalamansi, Kiat-Kiat, Lemon Meyer, Lychee, Macopa, Mangosteen, Mango, Pomegranate, Pomelo Davao, Mandarin, Kasoy, Lanzones, Santol Bangkok, and Sweet Tamarind.

Our heartfelt thanks to the school teachers, other volunteers including parents who planted the trees. Also our gratitute to Rosemarie Daquioag (Project Leader - Switzerland).

PLANTING SEEDS OF HOPE IN DAAN-ILI

As part of its Green Environment Program, 'Buhay Ko Bayan Ko A Better Philippines' (a Swiss charity entity) executed its second tree planting activity on 15 March in Barangay Daan-Ili.

Daan-Ili is in Allacapan, Cagayan Valley located in the extreme north of the Philippines. Like in so many places in that part of the country, the flooding caused by Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses has devastated the community keeping houses underwater for days.

The tree planting aimed to help the community restore native ecosystems and support wildlife recovery among others. This was done in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Allacapan.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Municipality Mayor Harry Florida, the DENR officials, local volunteers and Rome Marbach (Project Manager, Switzerland).

SAFE BLOOD FOR ALL

In partnership with the various government institutions, Buhay Ko Bayan Ko helped facilitate the recent bloodletting program in Barangay Campbagang, an agriculture farm community with over 2,400 residents.

The bloodletting program raised local awareness that individuals can save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood. It also encouraged locals to donate blood voluntarily without compensation and support the operation of safe and reliable blood services for the community.(*)

For a better Philippines, we at Buhay Ko Bayan Ko are humbled and honoured to have worked with the people of Campbagang and the following government institutions:

Philippine Government's Department of Health (Adela Serra Ty Hospital and Lianga District Hospital);
75th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army;
31st Maneuver Coy of Philippine National Police;
Department of Interior & Local Government - Barobo
Barangay Local Government - Campbagang

Special thanks to all the local volunteers who helped make this program possible.

(*) The National Blood Services Act of 1994, also known as Republic Act No. 7719, promotes voluntary blood donation to provide sufficient supply of safe blood and to regulate blood banks. This act aims to inculcate public awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act.

13 August 2019 / Putiao, Pilar, Sorsogon.

HELPING KIDS DISCOVER A LOVE OF READING.

In collaboration with MSWDO Putiao Chapter, books for children and water dispenser were made available for pre-schoolers in Putiao, as part of Buhay Ko Bayan Ko's educational program.

Putia is a community situated in the far-flung area of Bicol region. The sources of livelihood for the locals are mainly from fishing and agricultural farming. Books are the least in their priority list due to poverty.

Many thanks to the Project Manager, Guia Lorin, for taking the time to execute this initiative. As someone said, ‘If we want our children to thrive, teaching them to read is not enough – they must learn to enjoy it.’
