🐢 March Speaker Alert!

We’re thrilled to welcome CVT Nina Nahvi, Aquarium Medical Center Manager at the New England Aquarium!

She’ll be sharing her expertise on:
“When the Ocean Chills: Managing Sea Turtle Cold Stun Events from Rescue through to Release”

The final days of the workshop explored some of the most complex challenges in sea turtle medicine.

Participants discussed buoyancy disorder, surgical case management and parasitology, while practical sessions covered procedures such as Targeted External Weight Therapy and oesophageal tube insertion. They also learned about radiographic techniques and diagnostic approaches used to assess internal injuries and guide clinical decision-making.

The week concluded with discussions around criteria for release and post-release monitoring, reinforcing the ultimate goal of rehabilitation: returning healthy sea turtles safely back to the ocean. 🌊

To allow more time for discussion, several advanced topics — including fibropapillomatosis, chronic debilitation syndrome, and clinical case discussions — will continue in a follow-up online webinar next week.

It was an inspiring week of shared knowledge, collaboration, and dedication to improving sea turtle care across the region. 👏🏽🐢

As the week progressed, the focus shifted toward diagnostics and clinical management🧑🏽‍⚕️

Participants worked through haematology, point-of-care diagnostics, and laboratory techniques, learning how bloodwork and clinical pathology support medical decision-making in sea turtle patients 💉

Sessions also explored husbandry and rehabilitation care, including diet, water quality, enrichment, and life-support systems — all essential components of successful recovery! 🥗🌡️

Later discussions covered therapeutics and anaesthesia, helping participants better understand how to safely support injured animals through treatment and medical procedures.

Midweek also included a visit to a local rescue centre, providing insight into the realities of sea turtle care on the ground.

The first days of the workshop focused on building a shared clinical foundation for sea turtle medicine. 💚

Sessions explored sea turtle biology and ecology in the Philippines, followed by anatomy, triage, and clinical assessment of stranded turtles. Participants learned how to perform systematic physical examinations, assess body condition, and evaluate patients from the moment they arrive at a rescue facility.

Practical sessions included handling demonstrations, physical exam protocols, and necropsy sessions, giving participants the opportunity to better understand sea turtle anatomy and pathology while translating theory into real-world clinical practice.

Understanding the turtle patient — both biologically and clinically — is the first step toward improving rescue and rehabilitation outcomes. 💪🏽

The Sea Turtle Rescue Alliance is proud to share that we have completed our third S.E.A. Turtle Medical Training, which took place in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines from March 1–7. 👏🏽

The workshop was hosted at Western Philippines University in Puerto Princesa City and brought together 21 participants — including 16 veterinarians — from across the Philippines, alongside colleagues from India and Malaysia.

Over the course of the week we explored the foundations of sea turtle biology, conservation, triage, diagnostics, therapeutics, and rehabilitation medicine, combining lectures with practical clinical sessions.

It was an intense and inspiring week! Despite the packed schedule, participants showed remarkable focus, enthusiasm, and commitment to advancing sea turtle care. 💪🏽

This work sits at the heart of STRA’s mission: strengthening global capacity in sea turtle conservation medicine 🐢

Follow along as we share highlights from the week!

This South East Asian workshop was facilitated by and funded by — a huge thank you to both partners for making this initiative possible! 🙌🏾
